Waiting for Belthazor ( late Sunday Morning)

*As Paige has now packed all her stuff she decides to ask Belthazor to come meet her in the attic common room*

*She sits looking nervous, she's pretty sure he wouldn't hurt, but he makes her feel uneasy*

Belthazor got the call from Paige and headed up to the attic. He was still puzzling out her existence. She was, it seemed, half-witch and half-whitelighter, and such a thing wasn't possible. He knew he should report her to Raynor. But so far he hadn't.

He saw Paige sitting waiting for him, a nervous look on her face. Heh. Was she in for a shock. But maybe if he helped her out here, she could put in a good word for him with Phoebe. Er. Not that he wanted that. Really.

"Hey," he said as he entered the common room.

He looked around. "You sure you wanna talk about it here? Not somewhere more private?" He shrugged. "Fine with me either way."

"Suit yourself." He pulled up a chair and turned it around, straddling it and resting his arms on its back. "So. You're a Whitelighter, at least half of one. I knew it when I saw you orb in. I've been taught all about Whitelighters."

"Not in your case, no," Belthazor said. "It's your mother you share with Phoebe and Piper, right? I'm betting she was a witch, too. And if she was powerful enough, she probably had a whitelighter. They're like guardian angels, assigned to watch over witches and other innocents." He paused to let her digest that.

Belthazor nodded. "Part angel, yeah. Thing is, Whitelighters are all dead. They were humans who lived a good life helping others. Most of 'em are doctors, teachers, people like that. If the Elders think them worthy, after they die they become Whitelighters and keep helping people, mostly witches and people the Elders want to keep on a good course in life."

He looked Paige over again. "Whitelighters aren't supposed to reveal themselves to their charges. They'll take the role of a guidance counselor, a policeman, or something similar, and try to guide subtly. And they sure as hell aren't supposed to fuck their charges." He laughed crudely. "So it's interesting that you somehow exist. Your witch mother must've slept with her Whitelighter, and despite the fact that he was dead, he got her pregnant. That's not supposed to be possible." He grinned at Paige, a little predatorily. "Makes you pretty unique and special."

"I imagine the Elders would've stripped your dad's wings and sent him far away from your mom if they found out, so that's probably why they hid you. Unspeakable wrath kinda thing. For being the ultimate good guys, the Elders are pretty stupid and judgmental. They never let you have any fun." He winked at Paige.

"Orbing, yeah, that's how Whitelighters get around," he went on. "They can sense when their charges are in trouble and, yeah, they can heal, so long as the person isn't dead. You probably don't have any charges yet because the Elders don't know to assign any to you. And if they find out about you...they might just kill you."

Belthazor shrugged again. "Good question. The Elders are pretty strict about rules and stuff. That's why your parents abandoned you. They didn't want you to be discovered and get hurt. They were trying to protect you from that unspeakable wrath bit. Maybe the Elders won't hurt you, but I woudn't be so sure."

He leaned the chair forward and grinned at her. "Better be careful using those powers. You never know who is watching. Not just the Eldres. There are bad guys out there who would love to know about you, too."

Hmmm. So it seemed Piper hadn't been entirely forthcoming about her encounter with him. "Let's just say I know people who would love to know about you," he said. "But I might consider not telling them...."

He scowled, hating exposing the vulnerability Phoebe had somehow created in him. After a quick glace around to make sure no one was eavesdropping, he said, "Something like that. Tell her how helpful I've been to you. Put in a good word for me. And I won't report your existence."

Belthazor glared at Paige. "Fine, if you want to think I'm just threatening you, feel free. But your parents hid you for a reason, didn't they? Think about it, Paige. If it was okay for a witch to sleep with her Whitelighter and have a child, then why did they give you up? There's two reasons -- either they didn't want you, or they were protecting you. So if you wanna think the Elders are going to be absolutely happy to meet you, be my guest. No skin off my back."

He stood up, giving her a disgusted look. "Since you're being so damn appreciative of the help I've given you so far -- at considerable risk to myself, I might add -- you can find out the rest about yourself some other damn way. There are other things you should know, but your gratitude is underwhelming. So good luck with finding out the rest. You obviously don't want to hear it from me."

"I'm not trying to scare you," he said lowly. "I've got plenty of other ways to do that. I'm just telling you the truth, but you're so eager to assume the worst about me. So maybe I wanted a little leverage. And you get all holier-than-thou and think you're just so damn clever. If that's the way you want it...."

He threw up his hands. "This is insane. I should go right to Raynor right now and tell him all about you. All of you. Just get it over with."

He laughed. "Go for it. We'll see if they or the Underworld comes for you first. I've had it with all of you. I was stupid for thinking that somehow things might work out. Since you want me to be the bad guy, I'll fulfil your wish. It's what you seem to want."

He clutched at his head, trying to sort out all the conflicting emotions. She wanted him to be good? What kind of nonsense was that? He was a demon. He was evil. Simple as that. So why was he so hesitant to report Phoebe and her sisters? The Source would want to know about the existence of a half-whiteligher half-witch. If he didn't bring the knowledge to Raynor and it got out, he'd be killed for the betrayal. But if he did report them, they'd come for Paige. And Piper. And Phoebe. And they'd be killed.

He shouldn't care. But he was losing control. He advanced toward Paige, snarling, "You're right. I'm not good."
