Wandering the halls

Lane fastened a harness onto the Bondage Space Pirate Kitty Professor Beeblebrox had given her for her design in Fashion Class, with the idea of walking her cat around the dorms. She had yet to think of a name for the poor thing and was hoping to come up with some ideas today.

On her way to the common room, Jaye smiles a little hi and starts to pass Lane by, but stops. "Um, cool cat."

"Uh, thanks. One of my professors gave it to me. It was, um, part of an assignment. I'm really not so weird that I would dress my cat up like that on my own. Really." Lane knows she sounds stupid, but too late now, right? "Hi, I'm Lane."

"Jaye," she says. "And hey, have you seen some of the stuff they sell to people who want to torture their pets through clothing? Which doesn't mean I think you want to torture your pet or anything."

"Right - like little dog sweaters and Halloween costumes and stuff. It's terrible. And ugly. Not that I spend time thinking about that or mocking my home-town neighbors who dress up their pets," she says. Lane looks down at the kitty. "Anyway, I can't seem to come up with a name... any ideas?"

"Well, with that outfit, Poor Bastard comes to mind," Jaye says honestly.

"And I would agree with that, but that's not the sort of name I can take home to my mother during the holidays." Lane sighs. "It's not like I haven't tried taking the costume off, but it won't budge, and it's driving me crazy!"

"Well... You can call him Poor Bastard and then like... Steve or something when you go home. Nothing cutesy. If you name him Cuddles we're never having another conversation."

Lane looks horrified at the mention of the name 'Cuddles.' "Steve wouldn't be so bad. I could name him Steven Tyler... it works, because he's a lot like a pirate, you know." Of course Lane realizes that didn't make any sense at all, but she had to say something. "Poor Bastard Steven Tyler?"

Jaye repeats the name, and smiles. "I think he's been christened!"

"Excellent. I've felt bad for him the past three weeks, being wee and nameless and all." She leans down to pick up 'Steve' and offers him to Jaye. "Wanna hold him?"

Jaye shrugs. So far no real animals talk to her, so this is probably safe. "Cats land on their feet, right? Sure."

Lane shrugs too. "So I've heard. But you couldn't be any worse to him than I already am - I forgot to feed him for the first few days..."

"Oops. He's still alive, though. Poor Poor Bastard Steven Tyler."

Lane laughs. "So he was destined for that name from the beginning." She watches as the kitty tries to swat at a small flying bug in the air. "And things won't be looking up any time soon - he's almost old enough to be getting fixed."

Jaye winces. "He definitely got saddles with an appropriate name. Aw,"

"I just hope he won't waste his good years in a downward spiral of drug and alcohol abuse."

"Not to mention the so-so music after 1994 or so," she says, making a face.

"Agreed. He should have quit while he was ahead."

"That's okay," Jaye says, scratching Poor Bastard's ear. "There's always hope for a comeback. Another one."

Lane watches him purring in Jaye's arms. "Hey - he really likes you! I haven't seen him this calm since... okay, ever. He's usually running around like a maniac, attacking my furniture and my ankles. Poor Bastard Steven Tyler really has a thing for ankles - I don't know what that's all about."

"I think it's a cat thing," Jaye says. "He only likes me because he knows I know he doesn't talk." She pauses. "He doesn't talk, right?"

"That wouldn't be the craziest thing around here, but no, not that I'm aware of, anyway. He just meows in a way he thinks is fierce. And by 'fierce', I mean so 'cute and adorable'."

"I'm sure it's fierce to something. Mice, or... ants, maybe?"

"Oh, of course. That's it. Ants would be scared out of their minds by the fierceness of Poor Bastard Steven Tyler's roar."

"You know what's weird?" Jaye says. "This is not the weirdest conversation I've had today."

"Wow, I'm impressed. And also, good to know I haven't hit rock-bottom just yet."

"Trust me, there's a long way to go before you hit rock bottom."

"Excellent."

Lane looks at the kitty again as he starts to get fussy. "Aww, Poor Bastard Steven Tyler must be getting hungry. I should probably take him back to my room and feed him before I forget. Again."

Jaye hands Poor Bastard Steven Tyler over. "Yes, food is good. Otherwise he ends up looking more like Poor Bastard Keith Richards."

"And we couldn't have that," Lane says, taking the kitty back. "It was nice officially meeting you, Jaye - I'm sure I'll see you around again sometime."

"That'd be cool," Jaye says, and scratches the kitty's ear before saying goodbye and heading back off.
