406: Post-JA meeting

After the JA meeting Angelus went back to his room. He shrugged off his coat, unbuttoned a few more buttons from the top of his shirt, then settled down on his bed to get comfortable.

His notebook was in his lap. He wrote in it, frowning intently. After a while he sat up, leaned over to rummage in a desk drawer, and pulled out a pair of glasses.

He flicked the glasses open, put them on, then sat back against his pillows to resume working.

His frown turned into a smile, as though change of accessories had in any way made a difference to his efforts.

The door was closed, but obviously his roommate or, alternatively, someone Angelus gave a rat's ass about could interrupt him.

Logan knocked on the door.

"Come in," Angelus said, starting to recognize the signs of Logan when he heard them.

Logan opened the door. He was carrying a beat-up green notebook with a gnawed pen thrust through the spiral binding. "You're a civic-minded student," he said. "Wanna help me with a couple of things for a journalism project?"

Angelus quirked an eyebrow at that. He folded his notebook shut and gave Logan his full attention. "Okay. Take a seat, make yourself comfortable. Help yourself to anything in the fridge that isn't red."

Logan helped himself to a soda and sat down on the roommate's bed. "Here's the deal," he said, popping open the soda. "We have to do a propaganda campaign on the theme of 'Just Say Yes', so we decided to go with 'Just Say Yes to Vampires.'"

Angelus stared.

He stared some more.

Finally he managed, "I'm sorry, can you repeat that?"

"Hearing goes with age, eh?" Logan smirked. "'Just Say Yes to Vampires.' We're thinking a 'diversity in education' theme. Thought you might have some suggestions on how Fandom High could be more vampire-friendly."

"Are you serious?" Angelus asked, "or just bullshitting? Because after the day I've had this is either exactly what I needed to hear or the worst thing that I could help with."

"I am serious," Logan said. "Why? What happened today?"

"Found out someone pre-emptively banned me from Special Collections," Angelus said. "Pretty much got told to go fuck myself when I asked for a reason why. Call me crazy if I suspect the fangs somehow factored in there."

"What?! That's bullshit!" Logan said. "Do you know who...?"

Angelus shook his head. "One of the assistants, that's all I know. I'm guessing not Zero. Beyond that - " he shrugged. "I'd like to say not Parker because that's so disappointingly cliche of her. And yet she's failed to be anything but so..."

Logan rolled his eyes. "Wouldn't surprise me. Want me to talk to her about it?"

"She's not worth your time," Angelus said. "Right now I'm trying to find out who else got banned. Names so far are me and Draco, so two more strikes for non-human equals non-wanted. If there's any more then I'll decide."

Logan shook his head. "Bitch," he muttered.

Angelus gave him a smile. "I'm touched by your concern. And now I'm in a much better mood already. Tell me more about your project. Propaganda? So you really want people not to like vampires or are you suggesting some aren't as bad as all that?"

"We want people to love and accept vampires as we are all creatures of the earth," Logan said with a smile. "Or, you know, tolerate them. I'm not expecting miracles. I'm thinking we'll leave out the 'killed countless people' part. Some people around here can't take an apology gracefully."

"Funnily enough I had a conversation very similar to this in Ethics class," Angelus stretched his legs out in front of him, folding his hands in his lap. "With Parker, appropriately enough. Though obviously she didn't pay attention."

"You're taking Ethics?" Logan grimaced. "Bet that's a laugh riot."

"Actually it is," Angelus held up his notebook. "Projects catered to my special talents, plus I get to tell my classmates that they're being idiots and earn credit for it. I've yet to find what not to love."

"Special talents?" Logan asked, eyeing the notebook.

"Assignment for next week," Angelus said. "Teach wants to challenge people's ideas about ownership and slavery. She wanted my suggestions to help make that possible. As TA, I am happy to do my job."

Logan's eyebrows shot up. "Now, you can't drop a statement like that and not explain."

"Swear to secrecy," Angelus said, then continued as though he knew being able to trust Logan was a given. "She wants to pair students off as Masters and slaves. Sixteen hours of obeying or being obeyed. All with the goal of showing it's not as evil as you think."

Logan scratched the back of his head. "The teacher came up with it?"
