[Room 306, Evening] Only This And Nothing More

6 lay down on his bed, reading old Art Bell transcripts and highlighting pertinent passages. His jacket was hung over his desk chair. He had called Wednesday not 20 minutes ago and an unasked-for thought that sounded like Number 2 (one of them, anyway) pointed out that it was only one night and that she probably had forgotten already...

Suddenly there came a tapping, as of someone gently rapping, rapping at his dormroom door.

He stumbled off the bed and pulled on his jacket. He was still buttoning it when he opened the door.

Wednesday had a coat folded neatly over her arm and a collapsible telescope in her hand. She looked at him solemnly for a moment before offering, "I brought my own telescope. I hope that's all right."

6 gawked. This was difficult for him as he had a whole morose thing to keep up and had spent hours in front of the mirror scowling and looking generally disdainful. His gawking muscles were underutilized. In any case, the gawk only lasted a half-second before he switched to warily pleased. "Wednesday. So glad you could come. I have a pair of binoculars in my desk. If you'll give me a moment."

She nodded solemnly, bringing her hand out from beneath her coat to extend a plain wooden box with a black ribbon around it. "Father wished me to bring you that box of cigars as well, but I hadn't the opportunity until now."

6 took them from her and smiled. "Thank you. Give my father your regards." He turned back to his desk and rapped it sharply on both the left and right sides before twisting the pencil caddy counterclockwise. The lower right hand drawer slid open. 6 placed the cigars inside and withdrew his fairly sturdy but by no means impressive binoculars. "I think I'll enjoy those later. Tonight is for watching the watchers."

"I have never been on the roof," Wednesday admitted, shaking out her coat. "Where is the best vantage?"

"Near the top of the dormitories, there's a vantage point that I've heard is typically used by Professor Tick. However, I have not seen him tonight. I think we may just want to overtake his cozy resting place, since I suspect he'd know the best place to keep vigil."

"I have heard stories," Wednesday admitted, pulling on her coat and tucking the telescope beneath her arm. "Shall we go?"

"Of course. This way," he said, offering out his hand to her free one.

She took it with a very faint smile up at him. As they headed down the hallway, however, her expression could more accurately be described as calculating.

6 climbs out of the window on to the roof, which is very very high and if you had any sort of acrophobia, this would not be the place to test it. He turns around and, very much the gentleman, offers his assistance in leading Wednesday through.

One hand occupied with keeping her skirt from becoming tangled with her legs, Wednesday stepped carefully out onto the roof. Pushing back her hair, she looked around and then down at the campus and the town. "A very effective view," she decided approvingly, letting her hand linger in that of 6.

6 smiled. "I don't get up here often enough. If I did, I might have more information to use as leverage against our captors. For instance, there's a mammoth fire raging at the beach right now. Burning books, no doubt."

"As long as they are not attempting to burn my roommate or my aunt," Wednesday responded, considering. She unfolded her telescope and pointed it at the beach. "Ah. It appears not." It is impossible to tell if she is disappointed or not.

6 brought his binoculars to his eyes. "Dean Bristow is down there. Most definitely something devious up his sleeve. I'm sure we'll feel it before we see it."

"Well if he's there, then it's a certainty any attack would come from another quarter," Wednesday decided. "The entire school talks about how devious and implacable he is."

6 turned and gazed at Wednesday. Quite beautiful. "Of course. He's far too clever to launch an attack on our minds directly. He'd use something subtle... like Fandom Radio."

Wednesday lowered her glass for a moment, frowning slightly. "I do believe my roommates listen to that. I have heard it in passing, once or twice. Propaganda and scurrilous gossip, no doubt."

6 has utterly forgotten watching Bristow and his evil plotting. "I've been meaning to look at the signal, break it down for subliminal messages. But I don't have the proper equipment. I played last night's backwards and I got the message that Richard Starkey is dead. I don't think he goes here."

"The science club?" Wednesday offered thoughtfully, tapping the telescope against her cheek. "Or perhaps a project for the orange person who runs the A/V lab? You needn't tell them why you wish to run diagnostics after all and doubtlessly it is an 'audio' project."

"Mm. Administration. I suspect they have eyes everywhere. And ears. They're listening to us right now." He drew closer to Wednesday. "Freedom of our minds is all we have left in this place."

"Tyranny brings revolution," Wednesday reflected thoughtfully, turning to look up at him. "Like an endless cycle...."

"Caught up in the whirling dervishes of society's ball and chain as it smashes another generation's brain to chewy candy." He tilted Wednesday's chin up. "And the fools below all think it's a carnival ride."

She smiled at him, just the faintest curve of the lips, but her eyes were sparkling. "Never knowing what it is they witness, carried along by the sound and the fury alone until their bread and circuses come to an end and they are left alone amid the destruction, wondering what happened to their safe and cozy world."

"And all the while, Emperor Bristow plays the fiddle while Fandom burns." He shook his head softly. "Fools." He kissed her. She tasted vaguely of something he couldn't quite place... dark and rich and mysterious -- or that might have been the hormones talking.

There was again the urge to stand on her tiptoes and Wednesday decided absently with the part of her brain that wasn't tied up with enjoying herself, that this was probably why her mother wore such extravagantly high heels.

Filing the thought for later consideration, she let one hand rise to rest at the nape of Six's neck and simply enjoyed the kiss.

6 continued to kiss Wednesday, trying something involving his tongue that he's accidentally read about one time. Some nationality claimed it... Bah. He couldn't be expected to remember at a time like this.

Never let it be said that an Addams wasn't open to new experiences. Not that Wednesday hadn't had ample experience in watching other people kiss. You could barely pry Gomez and Morticia apart on a good day, after all.

Wednesday decided somewhat distractedly that she was going to have to be certain to find a way to get Six to do this somewhere public in the near future. A girl had to make her claim somehow, and people disapproved of branding on principle, these days.

6 broke off finally. "Erm." He smiled. Any other man would have grinned. He didn't have the mouth for it. "I'm not up on how these things work. I'd invite you back to my room, but my roommate is... an embarassment..." He shifted.

"I have two roommates," Wednesday told him, not moving away or so much as blinking an eye. "Therefore I do believe we are an impasse."

"Hmph." 6 considered mentioning that she had many, many rooms in her manor, but he decided against it. Time for that later. "Well, then. Without going to yours or mine..." He glanced out at the stars.

Wednesday looked up at him and decided that she needed to invest in several pairs of high heeled shoes at the earliest possible opportunity. After class tomorrow at the latest.

"Perhaps we should see if the Dean is still at the beach before deciding on a course of action."

6 glanced over with his binoculars. "I don't see him. He might be behind the fire." Inwardly, he wondered if they got a permit, then shuddered at the thought of such domesticity.

"Or he might be on his way back to the school." Wednesday had her own telescope out and was peering downward with deep suspicion. "Perhaps he was just waiting for a moment of distraction before coming back."

"Damn, he's clever. I would say we run for it, but this isn't the jacket with the parachute in the lining. We may have to wait it out until dawn here." With this, a chill swirled past them, as if to say "Riiiight."

"Or we could just deal with Harkness, if he actually shows at all."

"He was the one with the wonderful costume, was he not?" Wednesday looked thoughtful.

6 scowled. "I had my attention elsewhere that night, if you recall."

"I do." Wednesday smiled up at him.

Any other man on planet Earth might have found Wednesday's smile unnerving, creepy, or downright frightening. 6, for reasons that were entirely his own, found it charming. He kissed her quickly again. "Fine. If you're amenable, we'll go to my room. I'll deactivate the traps."

Wednesday's smile faded into a look of puzzlement. "Why would you do that?"

6's heart jumped. Not like in the books where it simply thumps hard and the author feels a need to get purple about it. His heart literally shifted several inches, paused, and then pounded back into place.

"I don't know. Forget I said it. I'll show you the upside down foot noose if you like..."

The smile was back, and Wednesday reached out to slip her arm through his. "I would enjoy that very much."
