Rory was passing by the room when she heard shouting.

"Parker?" she asked, sticking her head in cautiously.

"WHAT?" Parker was glaring at her laptop, holding what looked like a ballpeen hammer above it. She turned her head to look at Rory, and relaxed marginally. "Oh. Hi." Then she went back to glaring at her computer. And muttering.

"...utterly moronic, insular, hidebound, reactionary...."

Rory's brow creased, and she frowned, stepping into the room.

"Parker? What's wrong?"

"The British. They suck. Dear God, do they suck. How can they do this to me? HOW? Why? What did I ever do to them?" Parker hit a few more keys, then threw the hammer onto her bed.

"...wait weeks to hear back, counting on them, but nooooo..."

Janet could hear the yelling down the hall. She was bored anyway.

"Hey, Parker," she said. "Rory, hi! So who do you want to kill today? And why?"

"The British?" Rory asked in confusion. "What, did some mail-order company screw you over or something?"

"The Council of..." Parker stopped herself. "Britons. Which, despite claims of having what I wanted? Does not. No, no, they put me off for *three* weeks, and do they have it after they look for it? NO!"

"Or something." Parker snarled at her computer again. "Intradimensional inter-reality piece of-- crap! They, they, they...." She made an inarticulate gesture, and then shrieked again. "LOST IT!"

"Parker!" Rory said almost sharply. "Calm down. They lost what?"

"The Council of Britons?" asked Janet. "Strange name. What were you looking for?"

Parker took a couple deep breaths, looking from Janet to Rory, then back, and visibly got a grip on herself. She was still gritting her teeth as she spoke.

"I ordered something from a ... catalog. A surprise. A great surprise! They had the stupid thing on their lists for a hundred years, and when I finally ask about it? It's gone. Poof." She clenches her fist, and forces a smile. "Daddy's present. Not gonna happen."

Then she proceeded to kick her desk, still grimacing. "Damnit, damnit, damnit."

Rory almost smiled at Janet. Finally! A situation for their mediation skills to shine.

"Parker," Rory said calmly, "that really isn't fair of them, but why don't you find something else for your dad? I mean, this..." she waved a hand vaguely, "isn't going to help things."

Parker's look pretty much said it all. "Nothing can help," she said witheringly, then dramatically collapsed back on her bed. "There is only one other place that might have it, and the freaks won't answer their email!"

Rory sighed.

"Then why don't you try calling them? Or just find something else?"

Janet nodded. "I'm sure that you can find something similar elsewhere," she said calmly. "What did you order for him?"

"I need this one. And only this one! It's exactly what I--" Parker paused, looking at the ceiling. "Hmm." She lifted her head from the bed. "Phone, phone, they don't have a phone, but...."

She went scrabbling through her desk, muttering to herself again.

"... AT&T charges to another dimension, or just put it on collect? Maybe they can send a telegram..."

"What? It's a--" Parker stopped, made a a gesture of 'bigger than a breadbox, smaller than a golfbag', and then took a breath. "Antique. Holder. Renaissance. Carved. Medici! For god's sake, they only made three!"

Then she grabbed the phone. "But, maybe, maybe, maybe...."

"...did you just say 'another dimension'?" Rory asks, arching her brows. "What kind of present is this, Parker?"

"Special. Birthday." Parker looked vaguely guilty. "Okay, so, maybe it's... not entirely...." She paused, searching for words, then looked Rory in the eye, and shrugged. "Legal. So what? He'll appreciate it *much* more than anyone else would."

Rory narrowed her eyes. "What is it, Parker? And why would your dad want something illegal from another dimension?"

Parker managed - barely - to calm down. "Because the ones in *this* dimension were burned in the Bonfire of the Vanities in 1486. And he loves Lorenzo di Medici." Looking abject, Parker sighed. "I just thought... well, I got my hopes up. I thought I could prove that intradimensional trade had a future with the company, and get him a really, really great gift as well." Parker stuck her lip out, and let it tremble. "Stupid British idiots *lost* it though. How can you lose a one-of-a-kind work of art?"

Rory frowned and sat beside Parker on the bed. "That really does suck. Is there any other way for you to get something...similar, maybe?"

Parker nodded, still clearly pissed off. "There's a monastery in Italy. They *might* have another one. The problem is they're a cloistered brotherhood, and evidently, even though they have email, they don't use it. But," she sighed, and picked up her phone. "I think I just got an idea, while you guys were talking me down. I can call the village, have them take a message or a telegram to them, and ask them to contact me as soon as they can. It would spoil everything if I couldn't have it here for Daddy's birthday."

Rory nods. "Can I help? I could make calls for you or whatever."

Parker sighed, then smiled. "No, no. There's only one place, and... what time is it in Italy right now? Five in the morning?" She put her phone back. "Might as well let them sleep in until sunrise." Looking embarassed, she said, "Thanks, though."

Rory nods. "I'll probably be in my room for the rest of the night, if you want to get ahold of me for anything."

"Yeah, let me know if I can help," said Janet.

"Thanks, guys. I appreciate it." Parker looked tired but optimistic.

She waited until they were gone to start cursing again, only much more quietly.

"Stupid. Council. Of. Watchers. Morons. How do you lose a spell that ensouls vampires? Agghhh...."
