Morning Run--Wednesday, 7am-ish

Sam stood outside the dorms in a t-shirt, a ratty old pair of USAF sweatpants tied at the waist, and her sneakers. She stretched out her muscles and waited to see if anyone else would show up.

Lee comes out of the dorms, hides a yawn, and jogs over to Sam. "'Morning," he says.

"Morning." Sam rubbed her eyes, then stretched her right arm behind her head. "Is anyone else coming, or should we head out?"

"Not that I know of. Kara kinda groaned and said some unsavory things when I invited her this morning, so... looks like it's just us!" he says.

"Okay, then. Anywhere in particular you want to go?"

"There's a nice path around the island, I suppose?" he offers.

"Sounds good. Ready?"

"As I'll ever be," he says with a grin.

Sam grinned back, then yawned. "Okay, then." She started jogging towards the beach at a steady, medium pace.

Lee follows her, keeping at her pace and feeling the sleepy stiffness in his body losen up.

Sam inhaled the fresh air deeply as they passed the denuded trees. She'd needed this more than she'd thought.

"You know what I've never seen?" Lee asks with a short laugh. "The gardeners for this place. I mean, the grounds are so damn beautiful but I haven’t ever seen anyone tending to them."

"Isn't there a professor who teaches cultivation and gardening?" Sam asked. "Maybe he takes care of them?"

She looked around her as they ran. "They really are gorgeous, though, aren't they?"

"I should get out of the dorms more often. If I'm going to be the Fleet, I won't see much greenery," he says, keeping up the pace despite peering to his left and right now and then.

"What's the Fleet like? I haven't really heard much about it. What kind of aircraft would you be flying?"

“The Fleet is a lot like your armed forces just… um, a little less crazy.” And he laughs. “Also, it’s mostly about the space navy than ground troops and marines.” He picks up the speed a little, as talking about the Fleet always makes him stand up a little straighter and push himself a little harder. “I would be flying an attack craft called a Viper. It’s the Fleet’s primary space superiority fighter.”

Sam chuckled and ran a little faster to match Lee's pace. "Less crazy? How so, other than the whole respecting women thing?"

"A Viper? What makes it the primary fighter?"

"Well, I'd say a few choice words about your commander-in-chief, but as a foreigner, I should keep my mouth shut," he says slyly.

"Have you seen Star Wars?" he asks.

Sam chuckled. "Well, as a foreigner, allow me introduce you something we Americans like to call 'freedom of speech'. Basically, it's a right guaranteed to us in the Constitution, which is a document that is the basis for our laws. Unless you're saying something that directly infringes on someone else's rights, you can say whatever you want without fear of retribution."

After that long-winded speech and combined with the faster pace, Sam was panting a little as they approached the beach. She smiled, thinking of Teal'c as she answered Lee's question. "Yes, I have."

"Ah, but isn't there something in the Patriot Act that says that aliens to the country do not have the right to speak out against the American government?" he says.

"Good -- vipers are based off of a lot like X-wings. Only far more manuverable and without the s-foils."

"Er, I think they meant aliens in the immigration sense, Lee, not in the actual extra-terrestrial alien sense." She looked over at him quickly. "Besides, it's not like I'm going to turn you in."

"Those sound amazing," Sam said, a little jealously. "Have you flown them before? How do they handle?"

"Twice. And it was frakkin' terrifying. I've trained in the sims since I was fourteen -- my dad really wants me to be a top-notch pilot -- and got a chance to fly a real one... it's hard. They're flippy little ships," he says.

"Here, your airforce doesn't have space worthy jet craft, is that correct?" Lee asks.

"I'm so jealous," Sam said, "the closest I've gotten is an F-16 sim."

She pouted a bit, wanting to brag about the X-302, the Prometheus, and the Daedalus. "We have a couple of shuttles, but they're generally for short range flights, like to the moon and back."

"Shuttles? But I didn't think you had a colony on the moon - do they shuttle people?" Lee asks, confused.

"You're right about the colony, and no, they don't shuttle people," Sam hated sounding so technologically backward. "Well, they do, but the only people in it make up the crew. There's usually four or five people. They come back down to Earth with the shuttle."

Lee doesn't wish to show his absolute amused horror at how technologically backward Earth is so he keeps running in silence for a bit. "So Dr. Carter's space-worthy ship has nothing to do with Earth, right?"

Sam couldn't bring herself to call Eighth anything resembling her own name. She shook her head. "No, that ship has nothing to do with Earth except for when she uses it in an attempt to take over our galaxy."

"'Kay," he says, starting to slow down a little.

Sam was glad for the change in pace. She hadn't run in weeks, and she was starting to feel sore in ways she hadn't since they let Aeryn set the pace that one time.

"So, how're non-flying things going?"

"Well, something's up with Parker and something's up with Kara and for some reason, I think it might be related," he says, slowing down more as he's feeling a bit out of breath suddenly. "And I'd really like classes to start."

"Oh, and I think I want to have a party on Friday," he says.

"Well, didn't you say that Kara told everyone Parker's first name? Seems like something like that might really piss Parker off, since it's been such a closely guarded secret all semester." Sam shrugged and wiped some sweat of her forehead onto her sweatpants. "Or, it could be completely unrelated. With Parker sometimes it's hard to tell, y'know?"

"What kind of party?" she asked.

"As much as Kara confuses me, Parker's completely unreadable," Lee says. "I have no idea what is going on," and he slows down considerably now.

"I don't know -- OMGCANON one has to have a reason to party?"

"Hmm." She noticed Lee slowing down. "You okay, Lee?"

"No, you don't need a reason. Just wondering."

"Just an overwhelming sensation of doom," he quips and then grins at her, stopping completely. "We're almost back. We've done good, Carter."

"I hate when that happens," she grinned back, then began walking slowly in circles, knowing that if she stopped completely, she'd tighten up and fall over. "We have. No one died, collapsed, or sprained anything. Not bad at all."

"Last stretch," he says, moving again and smiling wickedly. "We can do it! We are unstoppable!"

Sam groaned, but followed him. "We're a little stoppable." Yeah, she definitely needed to get back into shape. This was ridiculous.
