Pippi has made quite a lot of salami sandwiches and there's several bottles of lemonade in the fridge.

She's currently parked on the couch with a plate of sandwiches and a lemonade watching a documentary about international politics on the History Channel.

After the book fair and dropping off his purchases in his still-froggy room, Walter headed for the fifth floor, where his favorite girl friends could be found.

He plopped down next to her on the couch ribbit and grabbed a sandwich off her plate while fishing a frog out of the couch cushion.

"Hey."

Pippi put her drink down.

"Ribbit."

Pippi moved her drink.

"Hey."

Walter had a bite of sandwich. Mm, salami-y. "I don't suppose you've heard anything about why this week has been so weird?"

"Um... No." she said taking a bite of her sandwich. "Why? Have you?"

"No. I was hoping you had. I had a bunch of frogs in my room this morning. They aren't as easy to keep out as kittens."

Pippi nodded. "Considerably less cuddly also."

"Croak!"

"Well? Ya are!"

"I suppose it will pass. I didn't have a chance to talk to you at the book fair. Did you find anything good?"

"I got some books about the notebooks of Leonardo DaVinci." she said. "You know who he is ya?"

"Genius artist, sculptor, inventor? Or is there another?" Walter asked, only partly facetiously because you really never could be sure.

"Ya, that guy." she nodded grabbing one of the books from the table after brushing a frog off it.

"He liked to build stuff, I like to build stuff... Seemed a good fit."

"I can see that." After all, da Vinci had been perceived as a bit nutty,too. "I picked up a couple of books on Spanish. I thought it might help since every time Nadia gets hit on the head or really angry she switches languages."

"Considering how often one or the other happens? That was probably a brilliant idea." she grinned.

Walter snickered and nodded. "I thought so. Not that I'm in any hurry for her to be angry or hit on the head, but it's good to be prepared."

Crrrrooooaak

Walter eyed the very large frog that was regarding him from the arm of the couch. He pulled a piece of salami out of his sandwich and dangled it in front of the frog's face.

"Wow... He's huge."

Walter jerked his fingers back when the frog (http://www.coffeecountyschools.com/jones/goliathfrog.jpg) snapped the salami into its mouth with its tongue.

"This has to be a magic frog. No way do they get this big."

"You should kiss her then."

"That's alright. What happens if I kiss it and turn into a frog myself?"

"You and Pip could hang out."

"Thank you, but no. I really want to stay human this weekend." He gingerly poked a finger at the frog, which was now eying his sandwich.

"You could kiss it, though. You're a princess, so you fit the story better anyway."

"I haven't lost any balls."

Walter snickered. "Neither have I."

"Yer screwed froggy." Pippi said leaning over and addressing the amphibian on the armrest. "Nobody around here is quite qualified to kiss you."

Walter leaned out of the way so Pippi could talk to the frog. The frog goggled at her, as frogs are wont to do, then croooooak.

"We could get you a ball, and then you could lose it, and then you could kiss the frog."

"I don't think it works that way."

"Ah. Too bad for the frog." Walter shrugged. "Or perhaps not. What if the frog is supposed to be a frog and a kiss to make it a prince would be a curse to it?"

"Hmmm, I suppose that's a point..." Pippi said.

"Would you rather be a frog or a Prince?"

Crooooaaaaaak.

"I'm going to have to guess that it wants to be a frog."

He pulled off another piece of salami and held it out for the giant frog. "Eat the salami if you want to stay a frog."

The frog ate the salami, which might not actually be a fair test, but Walter was willing to go with it.

"Well, that's it then." Pippi said sitting back again.

"Mystery of the frog is solved. Well done."

"There's still the mystery of where the frog came from," Walter pointed out. "Him and his five million friends."

"They come from France?"

Walter groaned and shook his head. "That was dreadful."

"I'm a pirate!" Pippi huffed. "I get to be dreadful every so often."

Walter didn't point out that she'd admitted to not actually being a pirate.

"Right. Now as punishment, you have to amuse us."

"What do you suggest?"

"I haven't a clue," Walter admitted. "I think Nadia and I are going out later or I'd wrap you up in something peculiar and time consuming."

Oh, no, that didn't sound right. Ah well.

"I have to do everything, don't I." Pippi said not taking her eyes off the television but nudging him in the side with her elbow.

"I'm a shiftless layabout," Walter said unabashedly. "You can never get me to do anything."

Pippi rolled her eyes with mock disdain.

"I'm totally telling Alfred when he gets back."

"Nadia used that threat, too. I'm afraid I can't give you full marks for repetition."

Good thing no one was going to fill Alfred in on their evening at Cafe Fina.

"Curses. Foiled again." she said... "Would I be able to make up the points if I hired sky writers to emblazon 'Hey, Alfred! Walter is a hopeless lay-about who you can't get to do anything while you're away.'?"

"Possibly. But then you'd lose points because Alfred would be less likely to believe it."

"How you figure?"

"Because that would be going to great length to tell him something fairly improbable."

"Then I'll add 'love, Pippi' at the end. And he's bound to believe it..."

"You have me there. I assume he'll be back in the next day or so. You can do it then."

"Yay!" Pippi cheered.

"I think he wants to prove he'd like to stay a frog some more."

Walter laughed and held out another piece of salami for the frog.

"We can't have him turning into a human if that isn't what he wants, can we?"
