5th floor common room, Thursday morning

River lay on her back on the common room floor, arms and legs spread out, watching the octopus she'd painted. Oh, and the nice symbols she had added around it. And the yellow fish.


The painting was still the same. Not that it shouldn't be, but her conversation with Giles about books with symbols had had her a little worried. Just a little.

As Pip headed out to snag some breakfast, he stopped by the common room to see what was up.

"There's an Octopus on the common room floor."

"Hello, ex-gosling," River replied, still keeping an eye on the painting.

"Hello River. Did you paint this?"

Pip generally didn't question why River was the way she was. Fandom tended to do that to you. But he had learned that a gentle touch was usually called for around her.

Pippi flounced in and noticed the symbols and fish and River on the floor.

"Has Proty done anything interesting?"

"I did. It's not moving though. That's good." River looked up at him and grinned. "Missing the feathers?"

"Yes, but the opposable thumbs made the trade-off worth it," Pip said, smiling.

"No, nothing. I believe that is good," River replied. "How's the monkey?"

Nodding didn't quite have the same effect when you're lying on the floor. "You were cute though. But you're still cute, in a different way."

Pippi nodded her agrement.

"You can ask him yourself, because it seems he had dained to grace us with his presence." she said as the monkey skuttled blearily into the common room. "Good morning Sir Neilson!"

Mr. Neilson sleepily doffed his hat and hopped up onto the counter.

"Why thank you," Pip said. "I think it's the eyepatch."

Sakurazaki's idly wandering the doors, small bag of peanuts in her hand and constantly being eaten from. Sure, it wasn't polite to eat in public, but she was still so very hungry, but feeling a little restless. She seems to be paying a lot of attention to the ceilings of the hallway, thoughtfully. Voices from the fifth floor common room tempt her to poke her head in.

River waved to Mr Neilson. "And the horse?"

"Maybe. What happened to your eye?"

"...So, does the octopus have a name?"

"You have more oranges?" River asked.

Mr. Neilson chittered something and Pippi rolled her eyes.

"Lazy as ever, but at least he's spending time outside..."

"Proty. Pippi named him."

Unfortunately for Pip it's hard to keep secrets from a psychic.

"No oranges," she says with a slight grin. "But I have peanuts." Sakurazaki's rumbling tummy is a little reluctant to offer some, but she does anyway.

River accepted the peanuts. "Say hello to Proty," she said, gesturing towards the octopus.

Sakurazaki was wondering about that. Her head tilts slightly as she glances from River to the octopus, but she gives a small wave of her hand toward the painting. "Hello, Proty."

"Fifth floor mascot?" she asks River before popping more peanuts into her mouth.

"I wish Proty could," River said. "It would make the watching more comfortable.

Pippi regarded Proty with a critical eye.

"If only there were a way to... Turn the wall around." she mused. "Then we could swivel him around when somebody wanted to watch him from outside."

"That would be nice, but difficult to do," River replied.

"Or suspected fifth floor curse, depending on who you ask."
