Outside dorms, Sunday morning

River decided she had neglected her painting recently. Well, she had build a raft with Pippi instead, and also spent a lot of time with Tyler. That wasn't painting however.

As the symbol painting seemed to have interesting but also unpredictable side effects, River decided to paint something else. Like a building. The dorms perhaps.

It started out easy. She got the shape down, started adding some details, creating volume through adding shadows. But it got so noisy! Like that constant chatter of thoughts became audible once she focussed on painting. Picking up random words she began adding them to the painting. It started to look messy. River frowned.

Tyler stopped by on his way back from basketball practice and bent down to kiss River's neck. "Whatcha doing?"

Pippi saw River from her window and flounced down to the lawn.

"Good morning!"

"Painting," River said, frowning as she looked at the paper in front of her. She looked up at Tyler and the frown turned into a smile.

"Good morning," River said. She held up her painting. "This is a lot more difficult than the symbols, fish and octopi. But at least it doesn't move."

"I can see that," Tyler said, crouching beside her. "Is it anything in particular, or just abstract?"

"Oh! It's the doorm!" Pippi said. "My goodness, you've included everything."

River gave him a funny look. "It's the dorm." She gestured at the building in front of them.

"But it's too much," River said, frowning. "Confusing. Noisy."

"OH," Tyler said, sheepish. "I was looking at it upside-down, and..."

He swallowed. "You're very talented?"

"Is that a question?" River asked, still not completely happy of his appearant lack of understanding of her painting.

"I'm trying to make you quit looking at me like that," Tyler said impatiently. "But whatever, it's not working."

"You don't see what my painting is and then you ask if I'm talented. It could be interpreted as sarcasm," River clarified. She did not stop looking at him like that.

Pippi nodded.

"I used to have the same problem."

Now Tyler looked annoyed. "I wasn't being-" he started, and then gave up. "Whatever. Fine. See you later."

He turned to walk to the dorm, knowing he'd have to make this up to River later but not especially caring.

River glared after him and returned to her painting. Somehow she didn't enjoy it as much now.

"You paint too?" River asked.

"I draw sometimes." she said.

River nodded. "It's fun," she said, then muttered: "Except when people make stupid comments."

"Yes it is." she nodded. "Well people often make stupid comments. That's pretty much what people do. But has any particular person made any particular stupid comments today may I ask?"

River looked sulky. "Tyler couldn't even figure out it was the dorm and then he said something sarcasic and then I got upset and he walked off."

Pippi shook her head.

"Some people just don't get fine art."

River nodded. "I know."

"Other then that, how's the boyfriend thing going?"

"It was going fine until this morning," River said looking gloomy.

"No relationship is perfect." Pippi said. "At least, that's what everybody says."

River just sighed.

"Annika's mom used to say that making up after a fight was the best part." Pippi offered.

She didn't get why that would be, but she was an old married woman so she probably knew something Pippi didn't.

River sighed again. "It's just not clear who should apologise first. When I argued with my brother he always did as he was the older one and supposedly more mature. Not that he was more mature, but you know what I mean. With Tyler I don't know."

"I think having an argument with one's brother is very different from having an argument with a boyfriend."

Come to think of it, Pippi probably had a point there. "Oh well," River scratched her head. "Perhaps I should try and talk to him."

Pippi nodded.

"That's generally advisable." She said peering at the painting, trying to make out what a particular brush stroke meant.

"That's a squirrel," River said, putting her paints back in the box.

"Oh!" Pippi said, "Yes, there's his bushy little tail!"

River grinned at Pippi. "I didn't try to talk to him though. She put the painting and the box of paints back in her bag. "Right. Tyler should be in the gym. He's there quite a lot."
