Meerkat Cabin, Saturday Morning

Dawn woke up and padded to the bathroom, showering while there was still hot water, brushed her teeth and hair, tying it up in a ponytail because it was hot. She got dressed and grabbed a notebook and pen, then went into the living room, where she tried to write a letter to Buffy. So far she wasn't having much luck.

Zack stumbled into the living room, yawning and still damp from his shower. He nodded and waved to Dawn.

Dawn waved back.

After pouring himself a coffee, Zack held up the jug and pointed to it.

Dawn made a face, shook her head, and pointed at her juice.

Zack nodded and put the jug back down, before sitting down on the couch with his coffee and copy of Gray's Anatomy.

Being naturally nosy, Dawn leaned over to see what Zack was reading.

Since it was hardly a secret, Zack obligingly tilted the book so Dawn could see it better.

"Ewwwwwww," Dawn said, seeing some of the pictures. Or would have said, if any sound had come out. She made a WTF? face and tried again.

Still nothing.

Zack, still absorbed in the book, completely failed to notice this.

"Zack? Zack!" She thwapped him on the arm. "Can you hear anything?"

Zack yelped and glared at Dawn.

Only not so much with the yelping.

Dawn glared back, then pointed to her ears, then her throat. She turned a page in her notebook, then wrote, "DO YOU HEAR ANYTHING?" and showed the note to Zack.

"Not really," Zack mouthed. Frowning, he snapped his fingers together.

Dawn frowned when she heard the snapping.

Snapping his fingers again, Zack pointed to his ears then Dawn's with raised eyebrows.

She nodded, then pointed back at Zack's ears and shrugged.

Zack nodded. Still frowning, he tapped his throat, and raised his eyebrows again.

Dawn mouthed, "Nothing. You?" She shook her head, just in case Zack couldn't read lips.

"Me neither," Zack mouthed back. His frown deepened and he put his other hand up on his throat. His mouth started moving rapidly. Anyone skilled at reading lips might have noticed words like 'antimony', 'arsenic', 'aluminum', and 'selenium'.

Dawn, not being skilled at reading lips, missed what Zack was saying. She pointed to her ears again, in case he'd missed that she couldn't hear him.

Zack shook his head and tapped his throat again. "Vibrations," he mouthed.

"So...." Dawn made some explain it to me hand gestures, then rolled her eyes at herself and offered him her paper and pen.

Zack started writing down a reply, before pausing and flipping through Gray's Anatomy until he got to the section on the larynx. He held it out to Dawn.

Dawn looked the entry over and looked up, hoping she'd understood what Zack was trying to tell her.

She put her own fingers to her throat and screamed as loudly as she could. She felt vibrations, but no sound.

Zack nodded and scribbed down a note.

sound = vibration
us making vibrations should = us making sound
vibrations != sound = not us?
