The roof, Monday evening

After spending some mostly handwaved, thanks to the work schedule time in town that afternoon and visiting Jamie, Nadia decided that the easiest way to figure out what she should do about what was happening to her friends in Argentina was to contact the only person she knew who might be able to have an opinion on it, Sophia.

An hour and a long distance phone call later, and Nadia was officially enrolled in Senor Fox's training program and had a plane ticket to leave from Dulles Wednesday night.

It was all rather more sudden than she'd expected, and her mind was whirling. She hadn't even decided that she was going home, but Sophia seemed to have decided for her.

She had no idea what to tell Walter, let alone anyone else.

So she sat on the edge of the roof and watched the sun set, trying to work everything out in her mind.

Pippi wandered up to the roof.

"Hey."

"What's new?"

If it wasn't for the sigh, this statement wouldn't have had the same impact.

"Where you going?"

Many many years ago, Pippi had convinced all the children in the village, including herself, that all the schools in Argentina were located next to candy factories. And that, instead of having to do math, and spelling, and such things as that, all the Argentinean children did all day was eat the candy which was pumped directly into the schools from the factories via large tubes.

"What for?"

"Good thing you don't believe in love or you might think we'd be sad you're going or something."

"I didn't say that you didn't."

"So you're going to be a super secret spy huh?"

[identity profile] strongestgirl.livejournal.com 2006-07-18 01:44 am (UTC)(link)
"What are ya gonna do if you're not?"

[identity profile] strongestgirl.livejournal.com 2006-07-18 01:54 am (UTC)(link)
"Sounds like a plan."

[identity profile] strongestgirl.livejournal.com 2006-07-18 01:58 am (UTC)(link)
Pippi shrugged.

"I dunno." Pippi said. "It's what you want to do ultimately. Isn't it?"

"Such is life. I went to live in Villa Villekulla because I knew that's where Papa would go to find me. And when he did, I stayed because I didn't want to leave my friends, and then I... Chose something else to stay with my friends, but because of that I needed to find a school that I could stand and that could stand me. So now I'm here and they are in Sweden."

She shrugged.

"Pardon me for saying Nadia. But that's a pretty stupid question."

"Love isn't a burden. It makes everything lighter. Sure I miss my friends and my Papa. But I know they miss me too. And we can call or write, and even if we can't I know that I can think about them, and tell stories about them, and I know they'll be doing the same. Out of sight does not mean out of mind... Not for me anyway. And I know that any time my Papa gets something in his eye, or gets a runny mode, he'll use the hanky I gave him for Christmas. And even if we didn't have things, we have our memories of eachother, and the things we've learned from eachother and that's pretty much all you need if, for whatever reason, you can't have the person themselves... Even if you'd rather prefer the latter."
