Third floor common room, Monday afternoon

Pete sat in the middle of the common room floor, poking at the remote control for the television.

He was pretty sure people had used this to make the box thing light up so he could see the people inside.

He just wasn't sure how yet.

Gwynn was bored, so she was wandering. When she saw Pete in the common room, she smiled.

"Hello there, Pete."

Mac stood in the doorway for several long moments, watching the poking.

"What are you doing?"

Pete looked up, smiled, dropped his eyes, yanked them back up, smiled again, and tipped his hat. "Miss Gwynn. How are you on this fine afternoon?"

"Tryin' to see the people in the box thing."

Agnes didn't remember much from last night's attempt at borrowing, but she still had an unsettling urge to impale things.

That might just be because she wasn't in the best of moods, though, since Perdita had started singing Sex Pistols again.

She didn't recognize this boy, but this seemed to be the common room with activity. "

"You realise there aren't actually people in there, right?" Mac said, going to remove the remote control from death by poking.

Pete looked up.

Well, what do you know? A normal looking girl.

"Afternoon, ma'am."

"Hey, I'm usin' that!" Pete snatched up the remote away from her hand. "And of course I know that, what kind of fool do you think I am?"

He actually knew nothing of the sort, but suspected that Mac was trying to mess with him.

Gwynn had seen his look, but had also sen how he had quickly changed the direction of his eyes and it made her smile quite a bit.

"I'm doing well, Pete. How are you?"

He sort of reminded her of home. Or at least she thought so over the sound of Perdita singing about being pretty vacant in her head.

"I'm Agnes." She came closer and looked at the teevee thing. "Do you know how to work that?"

Mac decided not to respond to the part about being a fool. Just because she's tactful like that.

"Do you want to know how to turn the thing on or not?"

"Fine, ma'am, just fine." Pete poked experimentally at the remote again, then jumped when the tv turned on.

"Aha! There's the people!"

"I can figure it out by myself, thank you very much. I don't need no girl to show me how to do things."

"Not yet, but I'm plannin' on figurin' it out. Pete Hutter, at your service, ma'am."

Gwynn looked delighted. "You found them."

"Yeah," she sounds seriously doubtful. "How long have you been poking it for?"

She folded her arms and frowned at Pete. The feminist in her has taken offense.

Agnes sat down and looked at the teevee and then back at Pete. "You're not from around here, either?"

Pete puffed out his chest a bit. "I have. Wasn't even that hard."

Not that he could do it again, if he had to. Well, without further poking, anyway.

"Not that long," only an hour or so. Pete poked again, and the television sprung to life. "Ha! See?!"

"I am from a little more than 100 years into history. Yourself?"

"Another world, I'm told," Agnes replied. "Someplace decently flat unlike this world."

Gwynn was thrilled for him.

"You are amazing."

Hell, she hadn't been able to figure it out.

"Unlike yourself?" Pete's eyes drifted . . . lower than Agnes' face. He rather seemed to like what he saw. It was good to know that not all girls from the future neglected important things like, say, eating.

Agnes blushed bright red and snapped, "If you don't want those eyes of yours drying up and falling out of your head like raisins, you're going to look at my face right now."

That's not all we could make dry up like raisins. Perdita's suggestion made Agnes blush even more brightly.

Pete's eyes snapped up. "You can't really do that, can you? Like, you don't have some sort of eye-shrivelin' ray or anything like that, right?"
