Roof, Friday evening

Walter had takeout from Ching Tai, some of which had an ominous quantity of thin red peppers visible, a blanket spread out to sit on, and his CD player, plugged in with an extension cord. At that moment it was playing Cherry Poppin' Daddies, but he expected Nadia would have other, more appropriate music.

He sat on the edge of the roof and had a cigarette while he waited for his date to arrive.

Nadia arrived a little after the agreed upon time, carrying a CD case with some Argentine tango music, as well as few choice other albums as part of her bid to update Walter's musical tastes a bit.

Reapplying the concealer to mask the claw marks from Pip's cat had taken slightly longer than she'd expected.

"Hey, I was told to meet someone up here for a bit of tango?"

"I think that chap might have wandered off for a bit," Walter said, crushing out his cigarette and standing up. "You might have to settle for my company for now."

"Woe is me, whatever shall I do," Nadia responded flatly. "Oooo, Chinese."

Walter put a hand to his heart as though stricken. "Until he returns, you might console yourself with the extra-spicy selections I got for you."

"Awww. You know me so well." Nadia picked up a pair of chopsticks and aimed for the food with the largest number of peppers in it. "Sooooo, how was your day?"

"Other than Constant Vigilance? Quiet." Walter picked up a fork and a container that was conspicuously devoid of peppers. "How was yours?"

"Also quiet. I read Phoebe's palm in the Good Omens lab."

"I've always wondered if there was anything to palm reading. What do you think of it?"

"I told her she's going to be a goatherd when she grows up."

"I would expect that came as a bit of a surprise to her." Walter put his fork down. "Would you read my palm?"

"Um, I can try, sure." Nadia set her food to one side and held out her hand.

Given the goatherd prediction, Walter had no expectations from the palm reading except a momentary diversion.

He held his hand out to her palm up. "If you tell me I'm going to be a goatherd, too, I'm going to wonder if your third eye needs glasses."

Nadia skipped the whole bending back the fingers and things and instead just focused on the lines. "Um, your life line kind of . . . splits here." She pointed to a spot.

Walter peered at the spot she indicated. "With the scars on my hands, that's probably just record of a careless day practicing."

It was not indicative of anything else. He didn't believe in palm reading.

"Either that, or that's when your long lost conjoined twin makes himself known or you develop multiple personalities."

"Wouldn't I - you know - notice a conjoined twin?"

"Not according to a recent episode of Casa,"

"I haven't seen that." Walter took his hand back and picked up his fork again. "I'll have to send you a note when my twin shows up to let you know you were right."

"I'd appreciate that." Nadia picked up her plate as well. "At least you're not going to be a goatherd."

He asked, after having another bite of his beef and broccoli, "Is there a rule against reading your own palm? Sort of like trying to tickle yourself?"

"I don't know. Aziraphale didn't say. But I think there must be."

"It seems just as well." Walter looked back down at his food. Just as well to leave this topic, too.

"What music did you bring for us?"

[nadiathesaint]

Nadia's expression broke into a wide grin. "Well, I've got some classic tango, most of which is actually from around your time or a little bit before it. And some modern stuff. You know, just because."

Perfect change of subject, clearly. "Feel free to change the music, then. We can dance after we eat. I'm certain you'll be able to show me new moves."

"Oh, definitely. El Professor is good, but you just can't cover tango in one class session."
