Marie was starting to feel a lot better and decided that, in honor of Fall Break, she was going to bake muffins in the common room.

Never underestimate a hungry Conner's instinct for muffins. "Hey, Marie!" he said, striding in with his miniature soccer ball under one arm. "You're looking much better than the last time I saw you." This was a good thing. Especially if he got food out of it.

"I'm feeling a lot better than the last time you saw me," Marie replied. "Help yourself to a muffin." She nodded in the direction of a batch of blueberry that were done as she finished mixing a batch of banana nut.

"Nowhere in my book is any of that a bad thing," Conner declared, and didn't waste any time taking her up on that 'help yourself' suggestion. "You ready for a week without classes?"

Marie nodded. "It probably would have been better if it would have been last week," she said. "But on the upside, by the end of break, I should be back to one hundred percent. How've you been?"

Cally wandered into the common room, beckoned by the smell of muffins.

"Oh, hi Marie," she said.

"Yeah, the extra rest would've been good," agreed Conner. "Which means you've got no excuse not to get it this week."

He bit into his muffin and made incoherent little happy sounds. "I am so not ready for Halloween."

"Hi, Cally," Marie greeted. "Help yourself to a muffin. How was your weekend?"

Cally saw Conner with the ball, and just started snickering.

"Were you at the party last night?" Marie asked. "I didn't see you there."

Conner shook his head. "Nope. Didn't go. Costume parties weird me out. Have fun?"

"Nice to know we're all mature around here," Conner said dryly. Yeah, because he was such a paragon of maturity himself.

"Really, really nice," Cally said. "I was off in San Francisco for most of it."

Marie nodded. "I was a butterfly. Jamie was a xerox machine. It was a nice party that I'm still slowplaying!. Why do they weird you out?"

"Sounds nice," Marie said. "Visiting friends?"

"Sorry," she said. "It's just... that reminds me waaaaay too much of what Anders used to do."

"A Xerox machine," Conner repeated. He tried to make his expression skeptical, but that completely lost out to the desperate impulse to laugh. "Oh, man, that's perfect."

He nearly snorted crumbs up his nose because he was still laughing when he tried to take another bite of muffin, coughed, and explained, "With all the weird-looking creatures where I come from, costume parties make me a little paranoid. I mean, what if some of them aren't really costumes?"

"Hey, at least I don't let squirrels steal mine and hide it up a tree so I have to go running all over the dorms looking for it and I really need mini-ball icons," Conner said.

Cally nodded. "Piper Halliwell, actually," she said. "Learned a lot, this weekend. About witchingness."

"This is true," Cally said. "I guess you really keep your eye on your ball."

"Hey, to be fair it disappeared while we were stuck in the comic book," Conner replied. "Kinda hard to take care of your belongings from there."

"You were in a comic book?"

"Uh huh, 'cause someone had to go and open his big mouth and say that the story really sucked you in," Conner said. Bit of a whine in his voice? Yeah, he was still kind of annoyed about the whole thing.

"This is what you get for reading comics instead of real books," Cally said. "Or, ummm, hanging out with people who do so, I guess."

"Hey," Conner said defensively, "one of my best friends is one of the world's biggest geeks. It's not like this sort of thing happens all the time."

"Hm, good point," Marie agreed. "I can see where that would especially be a concern around here."
