The Roof, Monday Afternoon

JD is on the roof, sitting with his legs dangling over the edge. He is writing in a small book which, to the keen observer, might seem to have a pink unicorn on the cover.

Dear Diary,

It is good to be back at school. I met Pippi this week, but it seems she is still dating someone else. I hope his head explodes. he is eaten by rabid hyenas has a very had hair day. Also I met my Little Sibling. She so obviously wants me.

Classes will be starting this week...

After hanging out in town for a while Pippi flounced up to the roof because it seemed to be quite a hot spot lately.

JD gulped when he saw the shining vision of red hair approached and slammed the diary, Journal, JD, its a journal, the journal shut and tried to think of a way to hide it as quickly as possible.

"Hi JD! Oooh! Whatcha readin'?"

JD's eyes shifted from side to side as he tried his best to cover the unicorn with his hand.

"Writing. It's a journal," he said brightly.

Not a diary.

"Oooh, super secret stuff then huh?"

JD nodded, "Just my thoughts and stuff." He held up the diary, forgetting about the horned horse. "This could be a historical document some day."

"Uh yeah! Horsey, with a sword," JD said dramatically.

"... On his head."

JD jumped to his feet, holding one fist high. "YES! A sword on his head, defender of my hopes and dreams!"

JD coughed, and lowered his hand. "Right."

If JD has done anything strange just now, Pippi doesn't seem to have noticed.

"I dunno if I have a defender of my hopes and dreams..."

After class and lunch with Jack, Evie decides to head to the roof to get some reading in, and she waves happily to those already there when she arrives. "JD! Pippi! So nice to see you again!"

Yeah, that's about four more books than anyone can read at one time.

"Hey Evie." JD tries to tilt his head sideways to read the spines of the books. "Whatcha reading?"

JD considers this very seriously. "What about your monkey friend? Wouldn't he defend your hopes and dreams?"

Monkeymonkeymonkeymonkey. He was thinking in a French accent.

"Oo, lots of things! A history of Rome, and a collection by Yeats, and a mystery novel that my brother found for me -- Mycroft Watson-- and um." She turned pink. "Another book. Not important. Never mind."

No, that's not a bodice-ripper. Would Evie read something like that? Pfft.

"... Hey! You're right! Wow... He's must be very sneaky that even I didn't realize that. I should give him an extra bowl of raisins for a job well done."

"Did you have a good Christmas?" Evie settled down far, far from the edge of the ledge. Some lessons you remember. "Isn't it grand that school's started again?"

"I'm sorry I missed that, but I'm glad you had a good time! I saw you at the Pink Pony Party on Saturday. Is it just me, or does there seem to be more new people than old, now?"

JD tried to get a better look at the romance novel. "Dude, is that an Angelica Demesnes novel? Dude, did you read the one about Ammy and Running Wolf? I think its the second one in the series. I almost..." JD's voice trails off, and he goes slightly pink.

"Oh, Yeats. I love Yeats."

JD nodded sagely. "You can always count on a monkey to have your back," he said seriously.

"Yes! And the evil sheikh? And the ball? And..." Evie coughed. "Ahem. That is to say. Yeats. Poetry. It's very important, and significant." She looked over at his journal. "Ooo, that's very cool. Is that one of the pink ponies who are going to attack? It doesn't have wings."

"There certainly a lot of new people." Pippi mused. "I'm not sure if this is the most we've ever got while I've been here... The group I came in with about a year ago was pretty large."
