Third Floor Common Room, Wednesday Afternoon

"Okay," Dawn said, looking at the counter. On it were several mixing bowls, eggs, flour, baking powder and soda, sugar, brown sugar, and many, many different kinds of things to get mixed into the cookies. She set the cookie sheets aside and tried to decide if she should cook the bacon while she waited for River.

"I think that's everything. Oh, wait! I forgot the blueberries. And the pepper!"

She went to get them out of the fridge and cupboard, respectively.

River soon appeared. "I brought some artificial flavourings from Serenity," she said. "They are very... artificial, but might work together with other ingredients." She placed small sealed paperbags with beef flavour, tomato flavour, green tea flavour and a couple of other options.

"Any suggestions for the first batch?"

"Something with lemons, maybe?" Dawn suggested.

River nodded. "Lemons and green curry?" she suggested. "Oh, and maple syrup?"

Dawn had never had green curry, but she liked syrup. "Sure. Sounds like it should be pretty." She started juicing lemons, "Glad to be back?"

"We can change to green curry to... chicken if you prefer," River offered. "Yes, good to be back. Old friends and new friends here.

"Yup," Dawn nodded, "and I'm okay with trying it. I'm not sure how syrup goes with chicken." As opposed to, say, how chicken went with cookies in general. "Must be nice to see everyone again, huh? I haven't met a lot of the new kids yet, though."

River nodded and began measuring the ingredients and pouring them in a bowl. "Lots of new faces," she said. "I've met some of them. And I have a new job, at the hotel."

Test the cookies!

They have an odd green colour.

"Oh, yeah? Doing what?" Dawn asked, realizing she should have zested before she juiced. Oops.

River didn't notice Dawn's mistake, or didn't bother about it. "Desk clerk and occasionally restaurant host. Shouldn't be too hard. You? New friends? New plans?"

"Not really," she shrugged, dumping the various lemon parts into the bowl, then getting the maple syrup. "Principal Washburn's going to have her baby soon, so Sam's a little spazzy about that. I went to New York with Karal and Gavin and Sam and Steve-Peter and Isabel, but that was a little while ago." She licked some syrup off her thumb.

"Ah yes, the baby." River smiled a little. It was strange thining about Zoe on Serenity together with Wash and then Principal Washburn having a baby with the Winchesters' dad.

"I've met Karal and Gavin," she said. "They're nice and I got introduced to Karal's horse and cat. And I've met Claire who might want to be a cheerleader, Ronan who's a wizard, Qui-Gon who's a Jedi, John who likes flying too and Andrew who's easily impressed. Claire, John and I might go camping this weekend. Scouting assignment."

The ingredients were mixed and River reached for the cookie sheets.

"Ronan was kind of a jerk to Buffy when he first got here," Dawn said, starting to spoon out the dough, "but he apologized with a cabin full of glitter, so I think she's forgiven him. John like John Sheppard? I forget he's new--it seems like he's always been here. He's the guy in charge of flag football with Molly. Andrew..." She sighed and stopped spooning. "Andrew's pretty close to a crossroads with his life."

"Ronan's been very nice to me." River thought about telepathic communications and spells to keep the noise of the world out. "And yes, John Sheppard. Showed him the Acorn. He understands about flying." She smiled a little. "Andrew mentioned Sunnydale. And yes, confused. And easily impressed."

"What next?" River asked. "What about trying to make a pie? Blueberries?"

"Like I said, he apologized, so maybe he was having a bad day," she said, only a little grumpy that she and Seely had to give up their rather elaborate plans for revenge. "John's a really nice guy, and really easy to tease. Not bad in a water fight either. He flies, too? Cool. Andrew's not bad--but he's too easily impressed by bad stuff, you're right."

"I don't know how to make a pie. Do you?"

"Easy to tease?" That sounded promising. "Yes, I did that a little. The scout uniform comes with funny socks." A grin appeared on River's face.

"I know what a pie looks like. So we make dough and then mix a filling. Perhaps cookie dough could be turned into pie dough by the addition of eggs?"

John wandered into the common room, having smelt something baking. "Ladies, what's cooking?

Karal was walking back from Molly's room when he smelled something...odd. "Hello?" he said as he poked his head into the common room. "Is there, do you need any help with anything?"

Sokka wandered by, grabbed a cookie, and took a bite.

Then he asked, "Are these up for grabs?"

...And THEN he actually paid attention to the warning messages his taste buds were trying to send him. "Hmm... spicy... sweet... These are GOOD!!!"

The first batch of cookies was just finished, and River arranged them neatly on a plate. She looked up when she noticed John and beamed. "Cookies. Try them?"

River beamed happily. "Am very pleased to hear that," she said. "Dawn and I are creating new cookie recipies."

"Sure!" John liked cookies and had no reason whatsoever not to trust that these cookies would taste different from other cookies. He grabbed a cookie off the plate and took a bite. His face changed as he chewed. "What's in this cookie, River?"

Looking up, River smiled happily at him. "Need help with cookie testing. Dawn and I are composing new recipies."

"Oh, AWESOME!" Sokka replied. He grabbed a few more and settled down on the couch in front of the TV. "Keep 'em coming!"

Yeah. He's not going to actually help.
