Fourth floor comon room: Saturday afternoon

Karal stumbled into the common room in something of a daze.

In his arms was a chinchilla. Esther the chinchilla, in fact, and she was extremely cute, all bright eyes and twitching nose.

Unfortunately she was also talking. A lot. "...so this is a common room. I've never seen a common room before. What makes it common? That seems like a strange name. Can I have a biscuit? Or a carrot? I bet there's some in that big white box over there. Put me down so I can hop around! I want to see why it's common!"

Karal set her down on the table, sank into a chair, and let his head thump onto the table top. Esther was still talking. "Why did you do that? Didn't that hurt? This isn't the floor, I can't get to the white box from here." Hop hop, nudge nudge. "Your hair is soft. Not as soft as mine, but it's soft. Can I get down? I want to explore. Where's my biscuit? You were going to get me a biscuit."

"Bright Flame, please stop talking!" Karal begged her.

"But you wanted me to talk. you said so. You said you wished I could talk, and then I could! Not that I couldn't talk before, you just couldn't understand me. I don't think humans are very smart. Oh, what's over here?!"

Karal groaned and closed his eyes.

[ooc: well, it's a common room, so of course it's open! Karal wished Esther the chinchilla could talk, and lo and behold... Plus, shhhh, it always said Saturday.]

Dean wandered down from his dorm room, then stopped and stared. "Dude, your... furball is talking."

Dean was still staring at Esther. "Maybe if you gave her a biscuit?"

Evie had wandered down a floor, looking for popcorn, and waved to Karal as she entered. "Hello, Karal. Hello, Dean!" She didn't immediately notice the chinchilla, and went over to the cupboards to rummage for microwave bags. Then she looked up, when she heard the little voice talking. "Oh my."

Dean grinned. "What I used to have to do to shut Sammy up when he was in babble mode."

"Good heavens, what happened?" Evie wondered, then told Esther, "I can certainly share with you? And do you know Momo Junior? He's my boyfriend's chinchilla. And, um. I think we only have hair in certain places because..." Evie flailed. "We like clothes better?"

Paleoanthropology was not her field, nope.

When Johnny entered the common room, he had a bunch of things that he was going to say. To ask where the noise was coming from, or what people were up to, or if they would mind if he turned on the TV to watch the Bitterwoman made-for-TV movie.

And then he saw the babbling chinchilla, and just kind of stopped and stared at it. It seemed that he wasn't completely used to Fandom weirdness yet.

"Well, he's a boy, so there's really no comparison," Evie told Esther as diplomatically as she could. "And I can certainly make you a second bag." Because on second thought, maybe the chinchilla should have her own portion. "And it's fine, Karal, I'm sure she's just very young?"

Evie quickly hit the buttons to start the microwave for the popcorn, and turned back to Karal and his now-voluble pet. "Heavens. Perhaps talking has made her happier? And Esther, I shan't give you any popcorn if you scratch me. Or Karal," Evie said hastily. "It's only fair, since he only wants what's best for you, and it's probably because of him that you can talk."

"You'd be surprised. He's calmed down a lot as he's got older."

Johnny sat down in a chair closer to the table, and tried to figure out whether to pay attention to the chinchilla or her own.

"I ... dunno," he said, finally deciding on the chinchilla. " 'M Johnny Blaze, but 'm afraid I don't have any food to offer you. Sorry." Man, this was weird, even by his standards.

" 'S it supposed t'do this?" he asked Karal.

"I wonder how Sokka trained Momo Junior?" Then Evie blinked, remembering what Momo Junior was like most of the time. "Never mind. As soon as the microwave dings, the popcorn is ready and yours, Esther." She looked back at Karal. "She sounds rather like a, um. Toddler. The few I've met."

"A very small human," Evie told Esther, taking the popcorn bag out of the microwave and ripping it open. "Careful! This is going to be quite hot, you might want to wait." She gave Karal a sympathetic look. "Well, nothing lasts around here, it seems."

Johnny had a hard time getting over the chinchilla's monologuing. He idly ran his hands through his pockets, but the only thing he could come up with was an after dinner mint, and he didn't think that it would be good for the animal.

"Have you tried feedin' her to make her stop?" he asked. "Or lookin' for the batteries?"
