Claire loved spirit baking almost as much as she loved cheerleading.

Well, she did, when it was something she'd do at home. But even without the mother-daughter bonding thing she still took an inordinate amount of pride in her range of butter cookies, all made from scratch. So she was up early in the common room, icing blue and yellow patterns on to the cookies as she waiting for the first person to turn up.

"Hey, Claire!" Molly called. "Wow, you got a head start, huh?"

"Hey, Molly."

Claire glanced up, a bag of blue icing in her hand still.

"Well, I missed it yesterday, and I thought I'd make up for it."

Molly giggled. "You missed some interesting cookies yesterday. I think the fifth floor might be a bit jealous when they find out what fourth is getting."

"It's my Mom's recipe," Claire said, and picked up an uniced cookie to toss to Molly. "When I told her there was camp, she got all excited and emailed me all her cookie hints."

Molly couldn't resist, she took a bite of the cookie. "Yep. Very jealous," she said before taking another bite.

When she was done, she dusted off her hands and approached the counter. "Okay, do you have a system going or can I just jump in and start frosting?"

Claire beamed in pride and glanced around at her workspace. "Nope, you can just go straight in," she says. "Might need to make up some more forsting, though."

River appeared in the fourth floor common room, quietly watiching Claire. Finally she said: "Impressive."

Claire wasn't really paying attention until River spoke, which was why she jumped and squirted yellow frosting across three cookies at once.

"Thanks," she said, amused.

River smiled. "Reminds you of home."

A beat, and Claire smiled back. "Yeah," she admits. "It does."

Which was why she did most of the work on her own.

"I can do that," Molly said. "I'm good at frosting. Do you have a recipe I should use?"

"Somewhere," Claire said, and lifted up a tray of cookies to find a grease-stained email print out. "Here's the one my Mom uses."

River sensed that and didn't offer to help. She picked up her own bowl and began to mix her own batch of cookies, singing quietly to herself in Chinese while she was working.

Claire glanced over, still smiling.

"What are you singing?"

Molly picked up the recipe and looked it over. "Cool." She started to gather up the ingredients for the frosting. "So where are you from and how did you end up coming to Fandom?"

"Odessa, Texas," Claire answered easily, but it's a little less easy, more vague, that she continues, "my last school closed. Dad has no idea what this place is like."

Molly chuckled. "I bet half the students wouldn't be here if their parents knew what this place was really like."

"Which must make PTA meetings a blast," Claire replied.

"What about you? Where are you from?"

"LA, 2009-- well, 2010 now-- probably a different version of Earth than what you know though."

"Birds flying among the reeds," River replied, stirring the ingredients in her bowl.

"Yeah?" Claire asked, licking frosting off her fingers unashamedly. "What's different about it?"

"It's pretty," Claire opined. "Is it Chinese?"

"My world has mutants, aliens, super heroes and super villains," Molly said and thought about Claire's easy acceptance of her super strength. "Have you ever heard of the X-Men?"

Claire shook her head.

"No," she admits, but the idea of superheroes interests her. "That's what you are?"

Molly shook her head. "I'm a mutant, but not an X-Man. I did fight bad guys in LA when I lived there though. Just, more under the radar than the X-Men and other hero types."
