Beauty was currying Greatheart after their morning ride. She was also reciting her Latin grammar. This was something the big horse was used to, as he already probably knew more Greek than Beauty's old language tutor. Either he found the recitations calming, or he knew there'd be a bribe for him, in the form of an apple or three, at the end of it.
