Inara was watching the Macy's Day parade, drinking from a large mug of tea and nibbling at some toast. She was unable to believe that this was a real activity and confused by the point of the exercise. The holiday sounded intriguing and worthwhile, but she wasn't exactly sure how to participate properly.

Still feeling at peace, Karal's path from the roof led him down to the third floor common room, and he smiled when he saw Inara. "Would you like some company?"

"...what are you watching?" Aravis asked, wandering in and looking utterly confused.

"Of course!" She tilted her head at the television. "I don't understand this holiday."

Karal sat and stared at the television. "I don't understand what this has to do with it," he said after a minute or two. "What is this?"

"I'm not sure," she said, frowning at the television.

"I don't understand this holiday," Aravis said, settling onto the sofa.

"This is...people carrying balloons?"

"It's some sort of parade," Karal said absently, eyes still fixed on the television. "I've no idea what it has to do with the holiday, though."

"I understand the holiday, at least in theory, but the practice makes no sense."

"...what are the giant...things?" Aravis asked, staring.

"This is very strange. It looks like a parade, the kind you see after a great victory has been won, only with fewer horses and swords and more...gaudiness."

"Demons?" he suggested, only half kidding. "They're nothing natural, I know that much."

"But what are they celebrating? There hasn't been a victory, right?"

"They have strings stuck to them," Aravis observed. "I'm so confused."

"I don't see what the...floaty things have to do with it," Aravis said.

"Not that I know of." He frowned. "I guess it could be in celebration of the day, but why is it so gaudy?" said the person in the black and gold robes.

"I wouldn't want them to escape," he pointed out. "Not that they're demons, I'm positive, but still. I'm much happier knowing they're leashed."

"But what do they have do to with giving thanks? Are we given thanks that nothing will attack us?"

"Maybe they're so people remember to look up and give thanks for the sky?"

"It's...maybe they just need to make it less so? Get a new organizer?"

"Maybe we're giving thanks that those things aren't here." Karal started to laugh. "They're almost amusing, though. Glory, just look at them!"

"I think that might be a very good idea." He tilted his head at the screen. "Or at least provide some sort of explanation. I read about this holiday. Nowhere did anything mention giant floating things."

"Maybe we're giving thanks that they're not coming to get us."

"Maybe it's some kind of tribal or religious event?" Yeah, she had no idea.
