Karal had said he could.

And someone else had mentioned that this place was in an ocean. An ocean! The very idea of it. He couldn't help but think of Kumbricia and the flood, of all that water rushing in, more water than he'd ever seen in his life, and great churning waves like the ones that had taken Dorothy's parents, or so she'd said. The Witch had mentioned Restwater a time or two, as had Dorothy, but he'd never seen such a thing.

That was why he was on the broom. And because Karal had said, blatantly, that he could. And that way, he was up high away from the ocean. Up high, so he could see it and get a view and really see if there was no land within sight in one direction, or if someone had lied to him.

He wouldn't put it past anyone, after all.

It was good to fly, good to be free of the earth and free of concerns and just plain free. He'd have to land eventually, since his stomach was rumbling and he'd need to go get some of the food he'd taken from the picnic out of his little hiding place in the room (Karal had mentioned a cafeteria, but why not plan for all eventualities?), but for now, he was a creature of Air.

Even in Fandom, seeing someone flying around on a broom was unusual.

Mac couldn't help but watch him as she wandered down towards town. Only problem with that, was that she wasn't really looking where she was going, and only just avoided walking into a tree root sticking out of the ground.

There are very few things like the sound of someone tripping. Liir, though not being particularly deft in any area, had a good ear. You get one when someone expects you to follow orders even when they're muttering under their breath. As such (and because he'd been on a low swoop of air when it'd happened), he noticed the tripper.

And stopped short in the air to wince.

He reminded himself that he had to get down to get something to eat anyway and landed not far from her, wandering over to offer assistance. After all, every one here had been kind.

He didn't want to stick out.

"Are you all right?"

Mac, who had righted herself pretty quickly gave an embarrassed nod. "I'm good. Just have to remember to look where I walk. Should've learned that one at age three, really."

"I'm clumsy elsewhere," he offered, feeling... actually, feeling much better just to hear someone say something self-depreciating and somewhat critical. Even if it was of themself.

It felt more normal for him.

"All right. I won't bother you, then."

"No bother." Mac smiled, shrugging it off. "You're new?"

"Just stumbled in the other day. And I've never taken classes anywhere before, actually."

A new person on a broom! River had been wandering around the island as she often did, especially on Sundays, and she couldn't help smiling when she saw the boy in the air, although her mind had been circling around more serious matters of the future. Not quite like a spaceship.

He felt the eyes on him as he landed and blushed, just a little. Perhaps he wouldn't do this again for a while.

River watched him touch the ground. Her eyes might have given away her curiosity, but all she said was a repition of the thoughts from moments before: "Not quite like a spaceship."

"I don't know what a spaceship is. Are you talking about me?"

River raised an eyebrow, looking slightly amused. "Ship that floats in space. You on the other hand seem human." With some magical abilities, she assumed.

Jean-Paul, flying sans broom, swooped over to check this other person sharing 'his' airspace out. "Bonjour!" he said happily. Yes, Jean-Paul was happy for once. Because flying was awesome.

Zack blinked as he caught sight of the boy on the broom.

Then, because a) he'd reached bomb-proofedness a long time ago, and b) he was Zack, he started trying to work out the aerodynamics of it all.

"Who can tell?" he said in reply. He didn't know much of anything about himself, after all. He could have been born of a rhino for all he knew.

LIir's all angles, acute mostly, sharp features and bone structure and posture. He rides low on the broom, as if holding onto a companion instead of riding a mount, so it's not too hard to imagine.

Like someone leaning over on a bike.

He landed not far from Zack, though.

"Never?" Mac could never really understand why anyone wouldn't want to be educated, or want someone else not to be.

"Well, you've picked a hell of a place to start."

"A DNA test might be required." River shrugged. "But who came first, the flying broomstick or the person flying a broomstick?"

Zack tilted his head to the side, considering.

"That makes much more sense than in the movies."

"The broomstick."

That was easy. Because the Witch had had it before him. It was her magic, after all. He believed that down to the marrow.

It was so easy to forget that it hadn't twitched in his hand until he'd willed life into it in lieu of the poor dead Piglet. So easy.

"Beliefs can be deceiving." River tilted her head. "Including those about yourself." She had a feeling she wouldn't be able to fly the broomstick as easily. "I have a spaceship."

He turned, almost spinning on his heel, before finding the source of the voice.

"What?"

"I've never seen one," he says. "But that's true of most things."

"I didn't pick anything," he said.

And the lack of education certainly wasn't his choice. It had been hers. His mother's.

"I just stumbled in."

"The stance," Zack said, because of course if it made perfect sense to him it would to others too. "Movies tend to use side-saddle. You can usually see the wires too."
