Third Floor Common Room, Lunchtime

Sam had spent the late morning re-making the stew from this week's cooking class, and he only had a few steps left to go. Dean was the only one he was expecting to come and eat, but he'd made the extra effort to double the recipe, in case anyone else was feeling daring.

Dean had gone back to his room after Law class yesterday and had spent most of the intervening time asleep.

Consequently he was feeling much more human and much less like a zombie when he headed down to meet his brother.

"Smells good," Dean said as he wandered into the common room.

"I know," Sam said brightly, sounding a little surprised. "And nothing's gotten burned."

"Good. Because I'm starving." Which, hey was something else that hadn't happened since the weekend either.

Sam grinned, happier to hear that than usual. "I doubled the recipe. There might just be enough for you."

"Yeah, but what are you going to have?" Dean asked with a smirk as he came over to poke at the pot of stew.

Sam came over and tried to shoo Dean away from the pot. "I'll make sure I get enough, as long as you leave it alone."

Dean chuckled. "This is kinda role reversal isn't it? I'm usually the one chasing you away from the cooking."

"Well, now you know how I feel when you chase me away," Sam said, stirring the stew and checking the heat.

"Proud that your brother's getting the cooking thing down?" Dean asked, leaning against the counter and watching Sammy.

There was a smell of food as Michael wandered downstairs and so, having nothing better to do, he stuck his head into the room.

"Hey."

Sam's smile got a bit more bashful at that. "I don't know. I'm still making pretty basic stuff."

"Hey," Sam said, giving the stew another good stir.

"You might not have noticed, Sammy, but I'm not exactly a five star chef either."

"Hey, Michael!" Dean greeted him with a wave. "My brother's making lunch. Want some?"

"You still make some really good stuff," Sam said. "There's a lot you can make that I wouldn't dare try yet."

"You'll get there," Dean said, heading for the fridge. "Want a drink?"

"Smells good", he said approvingly.

"I never turn down good food", he said with a grin. "What is it?"

"No, I'm good for now," Sam said. "So, radio said you and Nathan actually had a civilized conversation. Is there any truth to that?"

"Stew. His cooking class homework," Dean explained. "I'm his usual guinea pig but I'm willing to share."

"That because you know it's good or 'cause you're sharing the pain?" Michael asked, mostly joking. It smelled good, after all.

"Yeah, pretty much," Dean said, getting a soda out of the fridge and opening it. "Though I could have done without him telling me about wearing a tie in the shower."

"Thanks," Sam said. "It's nice to hear someone not related to me say that."

"Not usually. I'm a very novice cook," Sam explained. "But I'm getting better."
