5th floor common room, Thursday after classes

Annette didn't have any classes today and it was a good thing too. She slept all afternoon, too sick with being hungover to do much else. Now though, she needed something in her system and after a quick shower and brushing of her teeth, she padded into the common room in her pink bunny slippers and headed for the kitchen to fix herself a hot cup of tea.

When it was finished, she held her cup between her hands and sat down on the couch, muting the tv before she started to flip through the channels with the remote.

Turtle might have been on her way to bug Jeff (no, it didn't matter that she'd been bothering him all morning because he'd stayed over; the demon dog hadn't been down in her room, and it was overdue a good kicking), but, passing by the the common room with an idle glance in to see who might be out and about, she found someone else to bother. Someone she hadn't bothered in way too long.

"Heeeeeeeey, Annette."

Without invitation, she went to plop down on the couch beside her and bounced a little. "What's up? Anything good on? Nice slippers."

Annette refrained from rolling her eyes at that voice. But only because it would hurt her head too bad to do so.

The bounce though? Ugh. She held her cup steady and glared over at Turtle. "Nothing. No. Thank you. Why are you so happy?"

The less than pleased reception that she received only seemed to make Turtle grin more broadly. "Why shouldn't I be?" she wondered. "Why are you so cranky?" The smile subsided slightly, as Turtle arched her eyebrows slightly, and dropped her voice. "Still being all mopey about the breakup?"

"Don't you have... financial paper things you should be looking over or something?" Annette asked, turning her face back to the muted tv. "I have a headache and no," she lied. Then she sighed and her shoulders slumped. "Maybe a little bit but if you rub it in my face so help me this tea will find your lap, Turtle Wexler."

Turtle rolled her eyes. "Well, I was going to be nice about it, but now I'm not so sure. I haven't seen you in a while, Annette; it wouldn't be prudent to just jump right into being mean."

"That's right. There should be no meaness here. You haven't seen me in forever so you should want to be mean to Dick. Okay? Just remember that next time you see him. Kick him for me, okay?" Annette took a sip of her tea and let the channel rest on Food Network.

Turtle gave Annette a doubtful look. "I barely even know Dick; I'm not kicking him just because you guys broke up. Kicks are reserved for very important situations, Annette, you can't just go throwing them around."

She pouted down at her tea. "He cheated on me. Twice. But that's not important I guess. Not to you who secretly hates me. I know it. Don't deny it. And I did break up with him and I just don't want to talk about it."

"I don't secretly hate you," Turtle said, with another roll of her eyes. "Why would I have come in here to keep you company if I did? I might have actually hated you a bit before, but there was nothing secret about that. And I've grown up a lot since last summer, you know, so I don't hate you now." She shrugged. "Unless you really want me to..."

She looked at her feet, holding them out in front of her, her feet in their worn sneakers shifting. Of course she'd caught the quiet little mutter. She wasn't in the slightest bit surprised, either. It was just the other week that she was observing how that seemed to be the popular thing to do these days, cheat on your significant other, and she definitely Did Not Approve. But Annette said she didn't want to talk about it.

"So what do you want to talk about, then?"

"No," Annette replied quickly, almost too quickly. "I don't need anyone hating me. Or... anyone else added to the list already." She might be wallowing in self-pity today. Like, big time.

The beady bunny eyes were staring back at Annette as she glanced down at her feet, just as Turtle was looking down at her own feet. She figured, right now, wasn't much different than when she was with Dick. She didn't see him that often anyway. Man, this sucked. Her right bunny slipper fell off her foot. Annette didn't care.

"How's Jeff?" That was safe, right?

"Very good," Turtle said, with emphasis, but not too much emphasis, because she was definitely above rubbing having a boyfriend into Annette's face even if, way back when, Annette certainly hadn't hesitated to rub it in Turtle's. "He just got back from being knocked into a weird sort of dimension by his dog with Karal, involving a lot of mobs and chocolate, sheep and midgets..."

She paused.

"I didn't ask for too many details. He's back now, that's what matters."

Annette can be immature, yes.

She raised her brows. "Sounds like some sort of circus, Turtle. Did he... have fun at least?" Sheep?

"Not in the slightest," Turtle said, shaking her head. "He said it was just awful. I'm just glad it's over."

"I'm glad for you then. And Jeff. Glad for you both," and she meant it. Just 'cause she was in a crappy mood didn't mean should had to be too terribly mean.

"You two planning on going to the Valentine's dance?"

"I dunno," Turtle shrugged idly. "We haven't really had a chance to talk about it, what with him being gone, but I imagine so. If anything, I'll need to be there to represent the Student Council. I just hope we stick by the decision that there won't be a lot of pink."

"Nor chinchillas," Annette sort of grinned then added, "Not that I care or anything. And how's school going? Work? Everything else okay with you?"

Turtle shrugged. "All going really, really good. The store hit a little bit of a rough spot, but I've got a partner again, so it's all smoothing over really, really nicely and I really have no complaints..."

Which made her shift a little awkwardly, knowing that the same wasn't so true for Annette.

"Good. Good. That's nice," Grrrrrr! If she could only hit something! Throw her cup of tea! She had to get this frustration and hurt and anger and resentment out one way or another or she was going to freaking lose it!

"Perfect. Everything's just freaking perfect."

Turtle sucked on her teeth for moment before throwing caution to the wind and commenting, "He's a just a boy, you know, Annette. It's not like it's the freaking end of the world, or anything."

Billy had hidden in his room since getting back to Fandom, but he'd run out of the snack foods he'd stockpiled, so now he found himself having to go out looking for more food.

He hated pretty much everything about the wheelchair. He hated what it represented about him, he hated what it reminded him of, he hated the stupid noise the motor made when it moved. He even hated the steering (which he hadn't fully gotten a hang of yet). Hell the thing didn't even go fast enough to be fun.

Oh. Good, people he knew. Great.

"Hey."

"Eleven months, Turtle. It was eleven freaking months. Don't tell me you wouldn't be upset after that amount of time... after all the devotion and... and... love you put into it! And what if Jeff cheated? How would you feel? I can tell you how you would feel, you would be devasted. Your heart would be crushed... you... you... it's not even the least bit nice! And you know what? Huh? I talked to her. The other girl! I'm an idiot!"

Annette looked over. Oh. Billy. In a wheelchair.

"Billy. You're in a wheelchair? What the hell?"

And then Turtle slowly let out the breath she'd been holding in. "Well, yeah, I'd be upset about it, but come on. What good does just being mad about it do? Sitting in the common room with bunny slippers, drinking tea. I'd put that energy into something more productive, myself. And, also, Jeff isn't stupid enough to cheat. Because he knows he'd have to deal with me doing a heck of a lot more than just sitting here and moping about it. Besides, he never would anyway, because he's not that type of person. And then? If he did? And I found out about it? I'd be, like, well, glad I found out, because now I can stop wasting my time, areva derche, jerkface." She immitated a little butt kick in the air, with a sound effect and everything.

"I'm not moping," Annette denied though she knew she totally was. "I'm trying, okay? It's not so very easy. Not like I just want to run out there in the world and say, 'Hey! Let's go to the park today and climb that tree!' or 'Hey! Pizza Planet has a great jukebox! Let me go shake my thang!' Know what I mean, Turtle. I'm alone. When you're alone, you just think or you drink or you wonder what in the hell you did wrong. I'm not as strong as you. I'm... I'm kind of pathetic actually."

Turtle's lips quirked slightly and she looked the other way, shaking her head. "Hey, you said it, not me. But if you're all 'boo hoo' alone just because you're not with some jerkface who cheated on you anyway, then, y'know, I'm gonna have to agree with you."
