The Lawn - Tuesday after classes - 4/1

He didn't mind the crazy little old men poking at him, telling jokes and making fun at him. Mostly, it just made him feel like he was back at Kiamo Ko minus the chores.

...but the falling dessert.

What a waste! And, as he discovered when one of them fell right on his head earlier in the day, they were delicious! He didn't know what they were supposed to be, but he'd have to figure it out so he could make some. And for some reason, they were falling from the sky and onto the ground! It was a tragedy!

Eventually, he'd come up with a not so brilliant plan.

This, as one might guess if they knew all the thought behind it, was why Liir was outdoors, staring up at the sky with a wide platter in his hands, trying to catch a dessert.

"The hell?" Billy ducked to the side, dodging a falling dessert.

He looked over at Billy.

"It's not that bad."

"Reflex." Billy said. "Something bigger and more solid than a rain drop hurtles towards my head, I dodge."

"Makes sense," he admitted. "If I wasn't here, I'd probably do the same. Generally, things flying at my head were far more unpleasant."

Monkeys. That's all the narration is saying.

"Yeah same with me." Only not with the monkeys. More like, grenades, knives, bullets, that sort of thing.

Billy stepped under a bit of shelter and caught the next one in his hand.

"Hmm," he said, trying it. "Not bad."

"No," he agreed as he shifted to catch one with the tray. It splatted a little, but he got a good look at the shape of it before it did.

"I'll have to try and figure out what it is so I can make it again. Non-air born."

Billy nodded. "There's a cooking class right? Maybe the teacher would know." Billy was fine with just one pastry. After this weekend, he'd had his fill of sweets for a while.

He smiled.

"I'm the TA for the class. I'll have to ask her during our discussion session later in the week."

"Well there you go." Billy smiled.

He held out a hand.

"Liir," and the other one shifted to catch another dessert.

Side stepping another dessert, Billy shook his head. "Billy. I love this place, just when you think you've met everyone, you meet someone else."

"So I've learned as well," he said as he dodged one aiming, it seemed, for his head.

"Though I'm not all that social."

"I have my social moments. The longer I was here, the more frequent they got."

"Mine just happened.

"Mostly because I cook and common rooms are open to everyone."

"That's a good way to do it." Billy nodded. "Everyone likes free food."

He grinned, just a bit amused.

"Mostly, I just like to cook, but I've learned you have a point. Come by the third floor common room sometime."

"I'll definitely do that. Do you have a specialty?"

"I like to bake," he said with a brief smile and a duck of his head. "And generally, I like things spicy."

"Spicy is good. Have you encountered cajun cooking yet?"

He nodded.

"Some of the books I own are about cajun cooking," he said. "I haven't gotten to experimenting with it much yet, though. Most of the spice work I've done has been with the ones that're similar to what we had in the Vinkus. But I'm all for trying new things."

"I'm gonna take a guess and say that the Vinkus aren't on earth?"

"Oz," he clarified. "Though we're connected to Earth somehow, as people from there end up in Oz on occasion. Even without this place."

"Huh. Weird. But I guess if this place is possible, there must be other places like it."

"We've only gotten two that I know of, but I've met both of them."

He shrugged.

"They were rather years and years apart, though."

"Maybe it's one of those portals that only opens at certain times."

"It's a set of deserts," he said. "All around Oz. The Deadly Deserts. It's a fairy country, they say, cut off from the rest of things by the will of Lurline and Prunella and the rest.

"Damn me if I know why."

Billy thought about that. "Oh, I don't know, if they state of my own world is anything to go by, I don't think it's such a bad idea keeping a Fairy Realm isolated from the human realm."

"It's beyond me," he said with a shrug. "And there's nothing much I can do about it. Though the sample from Kansas I met in Oz" specifically in Oz "wasn't particularly... promising."

Billy winced slightly. "Eesh."

"Though apparently," he breathed out with a huff, "she came back and started the line of queens that, in Professor Ambrose's time, is currently ruling Oz."

He shook his head.

Mournfully.

"Huh. So he's from Oz too? But a few generations down?"

"Quite a few, really," he said. "But yes. We're from the same world. You're not in Inventiontronics, though, at least I don't think..."

He was usually pretty focused when he was in that class. It was Miss Lulu's class that he knew most of the people from, since he was the TA and had to help people out.

"No but I met him when we went to New York to get Sam's diary."

"With the dinosaur bones?"

...yeah, they'd talked about it.

"Yeah, and the exhibits coming to life."

He shivered.

"Yes, all that unpleasantness."

He and his for all intents and purposes father had decided not to leave the island if they could help it. Other than going to Oz.

"Yeah it's not how I prefer my museums to be."

"How are they usually?" he asked curiously. He'd never been to one.

"The exhibits are inanimate. Well most of them. Sometimes they have displays where there's little, sort of robots that perform very simple actions."

He shuddered.

Deeply.

"I see."

Tik toks and Liir did not do well together. Especially those trying to pretend to be something else.

"Okay don't go to Disney World." Billy suggested. "For the most part their just statues, artifacts and dioramas."

"Disney World?" he asked with a raised eyebrow.

...why would he go to another world?

"It's an amusement park down in Florida. They've got a lot of the animatronic stuff."

"Is that what it's called? 'Animatronic'? That's the name for a 'tik tok' around here?"

Billy nodded. "Least it was last time I was in a place like that. I think I like tik tok better though."
