Sunday Night: Main Campfire [5-26-08]

Lana decided to venture out to the main campfire tonight. She'd brought the fixings for s'mores and was happy to spend the night toasting marshmallows and watching the stars. Though she'd certainly prefer not doing it alone.

"Good evening," Giselle said happily as she wandered by the campfire.

"Ooh, I didn't know we could use the big campfire," said Hoshi, taking a seat at one of the logs. "It makes sense, though, if you want to have one big gathering."

"Hi," Lana said with a smile and offered a rather gooey treat. "S'mores?"

"Hey Hoshi," Lana said with a smile. "Well, I don't know if this will end up being a big gathering, but I thought I'd try to venture out beyond my own cabin for a change."

"Memorial Day is a day for gatherings, right?" asked Hoshi, thinking. "It's not exactly a holiday where I come from, but I've heard about it. There's supposed to be hamburgers and fireworks."

Lana nodded. "Right. It's a pretty big deal back home, but it doesn't really seem to be here."

Giselle tilted her head, inspecting the thing in her hand closely. "What is that?"

"Probably because everyone's from different places," said Hoshi. "Anyway, how is your summer going so far?"

"Graham crackers, toasted marshmallow and chocolate," Lana said. "Messy, but utterly delicious."

"So far so good," Lana said. "Almost a little on the boring side."

"That sounds wonderful!" she exclaimed. "Are you sure you have enough for you? It's so kind of you to offer."

"You never know," said Hoshi. "Around this place, boring could be good. It gives us a chance to get ready for the next bit of weirdness."

"Oh, there's plenty," Lana assured her. "Here try this one and if you like it I'll show you how to make your own."

"Very true," Lana said with a smile, "Which is why I was careful to have the 'almost' in there."

While she was quite pleased that she'd made it into radio again (although, really, it wasn't like she had any doubt), Turtle still felt awkward about the whole idea of having her Monday nights free. Thankfully, that's why there was campfire hopping and she was excited to see what she was seeing here.

"Ooh! Getting use out of the main campfire! I approve!"

"Hey, Turtle," Lana said, waving her over. "Come have a s'more."

"Gladly!" Turtle chirped, bouncing over and setting herself up to make one. "Thank you muchly! How've you been, Lana?"

"Are you going to be staying for the whole summer or just part of it?" asked Hoshi.

"Thank you so much," Giselle said, taking the s'more and somehow managing to take a bite without getting marshmallow or chocolate on her face. "You cooked it over this fire? I would be ever so grateful if you taught me how."

"I'm good," Lana said. "Things have been very quiet, but good. And you?"

"At the moment I'm planning to stay the whole summer," Lana said. "It's not like I really have any home to go back to."

"Of course," Lana said, quite impressed with that feat. "First you have to find a good stick to toast the marshmallow on." She looked around and found one that she handed to the other girl. "I'm Lana, by the way."

"No complaints," Turtle admitted happily. "Another semester of Turtle radio lives on strong, it's summer, and we're in France. So I might even say that I'm pretty damn good overall, glad to say."

Giselle waved, her other hand full of a s'more. "Hello! Do they not often make use of this fire?"
