Fourth floor common room: Late evening

Television was beginning to grow on Worf.

Especially when he found a show that was even better than wrestling

Which is why you'll find Worf sitting on the couch with a glass of prune juice and looking almost happy.

Alice was headed back to her room after closing Groovy Tunes, and was somewhat distracted by the noise coming from the common room on the fourth floor.

She hesitated, peering in, before asking, "What exactly is that, that you're watching?"

She frowned critically at the screen, attempting to understand what was going on.

At least she had finally grasped the concept that no one was trapped inside the tiny box.

"Why haven't they any weapons?" she asked finally.

Alice pulled one of the chairs closer and deposited herself on it, hoping that no one from the fourth floor would object to her renting one of their very nice chairs. If they did, she'd reassure them that they were quite welcome to seat themselves on any recliner that the fifth floor boasted in its own common room. Hopefully that would assuage any ruffled feathers.

"What sort of tournament wouldn't allow one to go back for one's weapons?" Alice wondered. "Curious that both forgot."

Alice wrinkled her nose slightly. "They've certainly got a curious method of ... distinguishing themselves," she said, as tactfully as she could manage. "Those ... tattoos are rather ... distinctive. As are the facial hair patterns."

"I've no idea," Alice said, lifting her shoulders. "This isn't my time period, either. But there weren't tribes in mine. It seems unlikely that they've developed. They seem more primitive than modern society, even for my time."

"I don't think time period really changes Man's essential nature," Alice said. She was certain she'd read something philosophical that had stated nearly that exact point. "Perhaps more inclined to show it, or less so. But civilization only covers what the beast inside feels."

"That doesn't belie my point, does it?" Alice said, mulling it over. "If such things are uncivilized, are Not Done, then one won't do them. That hardly changes whether they're inclined to do them or not. I suspect any civilization can achieve peace, for short periods of time. Until some external force threatens again, and that's when the violence is unleashed."
