Main Campfire, Saturday morning

Karal had a small fire going, and there was a large pot of tea keeping warm next to it. And plenty of cups. And a kitten. And a Firecat. And a deer.

Vashti (kitten) had been acting strange all morning, fluffing up and hissing at nothing when she wasn't hiding under the bed. Right now she was standing under the deer (actually Evey), who was sniffing delicately at a bowl of tea. Altra (Firecat) was sitting on a log, watching the fire because Karal was, but he looked tense.

Given how many people's friends and girl/boy friends had suffered animal transformation, Karal thought it might be nice if they could get together and support each other. To this end, there was a sign:

Is your girl or boyfriend (or your friend) an animal? Have some tea and share with others who will understand.

It's possible he hadn't thought the wording of that through as well as he could have.

"It's a bit of an epidemic, isn't it?" Jeff sighed, still clutching his turtle, and flopped down onto the ground by the campfire.

Lee shuffled up, cupping a bird in his hands. "There's more than just me, huh?"

Romeo gratefully claimed some tea, Yurika the rabbit clasped in one arm.

"It's been over a week," he stated.

"I am beginning to think there's something in the water," Karal replied, as Evey watched Jeff warily. She'd heard the story of the locker travels.

Karal poured him a cup of tea. "This should be safe enough, though."

Karal smiled up at him as Altra turned to stare at the bird. "Many more, I'm afraid." He nodded at the deer. "The deer is Evey, but the kitten is just a kitten. Who is that?" he asked, nodding at the bird and pouring Lee a cup of tea, which he held out.

"I'm sorry to hear that," Karal said with deep sympathy, and poured Romeo a cup of tea, offering it to him. "It's been the same for Evey and I."

"Did you check?" Jeff asked, attempting to balance the turtle on his lap, "You know, if the water's alright? I don't want to wind up a caribou."

"Adah," he said. "I think you two might know each other."

He took the tea and settled down, keeping the bird on his knee. She started pecking at his knee almost immediately.

"And I am sorry to hear that," Romeo returned. "Do you think she can understand you? Sometimes I feel like Yurika's listening to every word, other times ..." she snuffled at the tea, and he sighed. "She could be any rabbit."

"She does, definitely." Evey lifted her head and picked her way delicately over to look up at the rabbit. "Even is she looks like a deer, I know it's still Evey. Possibly it's just difficult for Yurika to communicate with you? Rabbits are more limited than deer, I think."

"Who's the turtle?" Lee wondered, watching the bird on his knee carefully.

John had no pet girlfriend in tow, but was greatly amused by the sign. "Do I need to pretend someone's an animal to participate in this party?"

Altra's whiskers twitched in amusement and Karal gaped. "I, yes, we do. Umm, we had a robot child together at one point." His surprise had his mouth working without him thinking. Karal shook off his surprise and poured Lee a cup of tea, setting it down next to him. "How long has she been a bird?"

Jeff blinked at the new guy and shrugged. "Turtle," he said, because that explained everything.

"Turtle...from the radio?" Lee asked, amused. "Turtle turned into a turtle?"

"Well, it's been boiled, and I've had two cups already, so I think you'll be all right," Karal assured him. "That is Turtle, isn't it?" He couldn't quite believe Fandom had actually turned her into her namesake; it seemed far too prosaic for the island's sense of humour.

"We're hitting a week right now," he said. "And right, robot child. I heard about you. Adah wanted me to punch you for a few days and then took it back. I think she was kidding."

Dojima glared a tiny rabbity glare. She wasn't limited, people were just idiots, domo arigato.

"Evey's quite delicate-looking, isn't she?" Romeo mused, with a smile for the creature. "I don't know her well, but I can see the girl in the deer."

"And perhaps. She likes speaking Japanese at me when she's a person, so it's nothing new if she's trying to communicate and I am missing it."

Karal smiled at him. "You can if you like, but it's not necessary," he said, and poured John a cup of tea, holding it out to him. "I could loan you Vashti if you wanted to fit in unnoticed, though." Evey just looked at Karal, and the kitten hissed. "Or perhaps not."

"I suppose that's good," Jeff said, but it didn't keep him from looking at the tea with some suspicion. "And she always was a bit literal about things."

Jeff held up the turtle in clear sight so Lee could see. "She did," he explained, "She was brushing her teeth at the time; maybe she felt she needed a space to recuperate."

"Huh." He eyed the turtle and smiled. "I've got a raven with a broken wing here. Adah Price."

"...she wanted you to punch me?" If he took a few steps away, it was hard to blame him. "Why?"

John smiled, accepting the tea. "I'd probably get in trouble for telling people Jaina was an animal anyway." It was always surprising for John to do something that showed he wanted to live.

Evey nodded graciously at Romeo, and Karal rested a hand on her head. "She is, and she found a way to turn pages with her hooves," he said, sounding proud. "Though I think it's hard to read through deer eyes." It certainly was through cat eyes.

"If she stays this way for much longer, perhaps you could work out a series of signals? Ear flicks or paw stamps, or something similar," he suggested, then addressed Yurika directly. "I'm not sure if we've met," he said to her. "I'm Karal and this is Evey."
