After a ~~handwaved~~ discussion with Tony, it had been decided to move the bake sale to the dorm lobby instead of the theater since someone had used all of Hoshi's poster-making supplies to decorate her dorm room with magazine pictures over the weekend.

She managed to get the tables set up without problems and started putting out the cookies she'd baked last night as well as other baked goods that had been donated.

Above the tables was a sign.

Now I'm nostalgic for all the fundraisers I ran in college. Instead of a bake sale, though, we sold churros.

Don't forget that the first floor lobby is open to teachers and townies! Everyone is welcome to donate to the sets and costumes fund.

Among the donations to the bake sale were a certain naughtily named cookie for which Lulu was likely now infamous on the island -- cookies made with ground hazelnut, and with a dollop of chocolate in a hollow on the top.

Andrew was in a hurry to get to work, but he had promised Tony he would make something for the bake sale. Upon seeing Hoshi, he smiled, and greeted her in a slightly archaic Urdu: "/Hello, bright spot! For you, this day, I have baked lumps of sweet grain, laced with pungent water of fowl./"

It was safe to say his Urdu was a little rusty.

Hoshi figured it might be safer to stick to English. "Thanks, Andrew! Are you working on a new language?"

"Not so much new," he replied, switching back to English. "But I find that if you don't use a language, you start to forget bits and pieces, you know?"

He sat down sat down the cardboard box full of pumpkin muffins. "I brought these by for your sale," he explained.

"Oh, definitely. Practice and repetition definitely help with retention," said Hoshi.

She grinned as she looked at the muffins. "These look delicious! Thank you so much, Andrew. Will you be coming to see the play?"

"I will! I love theater. It's such a complex art. Are you in the play?" he asked.

"Hey," Tony grinned. "Thanks for helping out."

"I've got a small part as Fabrizia, one of the maids," said Hoshi. "I've got a couple of really nice scenes, nothing too difficult for a beginner. I'm just working on trying to relax when I'm on-stage."

"Everything looks good!" Tony smiled at Hoshi. "Thanks for setting this all up."

Cal was definitely laying low today, but he was getting stir-crazy in his room. He found this to be a rather welcome distraction, holding back his steps from continuing out the dorms and into town, where only trouble awaited him.

His head tilted. "Something tells me I need to pay more attention in discussions at the Boards," he commented when he saw what the bake sale was for. "How's it going Hoshi?"

"Oh, it's no problem," said Hoshi. "Hopefully, we'll make enough to do some really nice sets in addition to costumes."

"I'm good," said Hoshi. "I just wish Homecoming had been longer. The part about the alumni visiting, not all the weird stuff that happened. I had a good time at the dance, but it wasn't long enough to catch up with all of my friends."

"I'm a firm believer in the virtues of charity," he said. "Plus the guy who asked me to help is really kinda cute, and I'm trying to make a good impression." He grinned back.

"You know, people always say to just visualize the audience in their underwear, but I really wouldn't do that. For starters, the lights are almost always too bright to even see anyone in the audience, and when you do, it can be a major distraction." There had been some really attractive people in the audience last time Andrew was on stage.

"I'm glad you said that," said Hoshi, grinning. "Someone else gave me the audience in their underwear tip, but I think I had an aneurysm just thinking about it," said Hoshi. "Just like with a new language, though, practice and repetition has been very helpful."

"Well, if you ever want someone to help you run lines, keep me in mind," he said. "We could try them out in different languages, for fun!"

"I think you succeeded," Tony smiled, looking at the muffins. "These look really good. What kind are they?"

"Aww," Cal gave her a faintly teasing grin. "See, I haven't got any graduated friends here, so I just wish it was longer merely because it was fun."

"Also," he added, "can I get a cookie for free since I'm supporting the play by being in it?"

"Oooh, that's a good idea. I might take you up on that," said Hoshi.

"I'm sure a free sample couldn't hurt," said Hoshi. "But after that one, you have to pay. It is for a good cause."

"It'd be nice to have a bit of a budget," Tony agreed. "If we make enough, maybe we can do some improvements to the lighting grid, too.

"They're pumpkin," he replied. "I thought they might move better being that the trees are starting to change and all that stuff." He pulled one out of the box. "Wanna try one? Or, um, buy it?"
