Gym; Sunday Afternoon [ 01/04].

Cal really didn't put much stock into New Years Resolution, but he did have a general belief that a new year wasn't a bad time to get back on track with his workouts.

Plus, he wanted to get out of his room to avoid having to explain more things to his doofy roommate. Cal realized he should have probably been more sympathetic since the guy was practically from the Dark Ages (literally), but, man. He hadn't even caught up with the technology of this century; he wasn't about to explain it to someone several more behind if he could avoid it.

So he was in the gym, stretching out a bit before hitting up the weight.

Dinah had woken up late, and figured that a workout would be a good way to get ready for the day. Also, Helena would give her the worst time ever if she slacked off on her training at all. A little time on the mat, and with the bag, seemed to be called for.

She followed the directions she'd been given to the gym by Jamie ~~*handwavily*~~ and nodded to the guy stretching when she arrived. "Hey." She set her bag off to the side, and started stretching too, a little further away. Maybe they could talk later, after she'd gotten her exercise in.

Cal had to admit to a little bit of surprise at seeing one of the new kids in here; even if any of them were obsessive about working out like so many of the current kids were, hitting up the place on the second day was what he would definitely call far too dedicated.

The fact that she was a cute girl added just a bit to the surprise, but he was also thinking that he could really be okay with an increase of regulars if there were more cute girls.

"Hey," he offered back, steadily continuing to lift his dumbbell weights. "How's it going?"

Dinah reached for her toes, stretching out her spine, then twisting sideways. She grinned over her shoulder at Cal briefly. "Pretty good so far." Kind of awesome so far, but she was trying to be a little cooler than yesterday. "I'm Dinah." She flexed her fingers, then fished her gloves and her wrappings out of her bag, and started wrapping her fingers. She watched Cal lift weights as she prepped her hands, a bit impressed. Another cute guy, and one who took fitness seriously.

Although Cal was taking note of Dinah's stretches as she moved, he made sure that his attention barely seemed to stray from his weights. "Cal," he offered and, noting the gloves and wrappings, commented, "So we've got another boxer."

He amused himself by thinking that he thought Jaina said she didn't have any relatives come in this time, but kept that one to himself since it probably wouldn't make much sense to a new kid.

"Yeah, kickboxing," Dinah admitted, not getting into the other types she was studying too. "For the last year or so." She fixed the last strip, and pulled on the gloves. "You look like you've been doing that a while?" Okay, not exactly scintillating, but they were both working out, not at a cocktail party, right?

She started off with the kicks first, side and crescent, so she could stay facing Cal if he said something else. After a minute, she was alternating kicks with punches, and elbow strikes, bouncing with extra energy. Yay!

After about ten, she backed off a little to get her breath back.

Cal shrugged. "Had a routine for a few years, about," he admitted, and, after slowing his reps a bit as Dinah started getting into it, he couldn't help asking when she took a breath, "You too?"

"Pretty much," Dinah said, taking a breath, and leaning down to grab her water bottle out of her bag. "My sister's way better at it than I am. I'm trying to catch up, but who knows if that will ever happen." She gulped at the bottle, put it to her head, then screwed the top back on and put it in the bag. "Are there any sports teams here, or clubs? I don't mind doing this on my own, but it'd be cool if there were other people to spar with or work out with."

"We did a lot of stuff like that in Self-Defense Club," Cal offered. "Hoshi ran that; I'm not sure if she's planning on doing it again, but it would be cool if she did. This isn't really much of a school for sports; all they've got is cheerleading."

The look on Cal's face made it clear that he wasn't one to usually lump that in with a sport, unless you could also count ogling as a sport.

Dinah did a series of elbow-strikes and reverse-strikes at the bag, and then grinned at Cal. "Oh, cool. Hoshi. I'll keep my ears open for that," she said, brightening and bouncing on her toes. The dorkiness might have been extra-obvious there. "And cheerleading?" She came down on her heels, and frowned. "Without anything else to cheer for?"

She kind of had mixed feelings about that; her experience of cheerleaders had been... not positive. But the rest of this school was so different, maybe that would be too. "There really isn't anything typical about this place, is there?"

Cal took a moment, thought about it, considered as many angles as he could.

"No," he concluded, grinning at Dinah a little wryly. "Not really."

"It's so awesome!" So much for being cool. Dinah got a grip on herself, but the grin didn't go away. "I mean I usually hate school. There never seemed to be any point, and all the crap that goes with it, the social stuff and hazing, how much did that suck? But here, even if that happens again, this place is so cool it almost seems like it'd be worth it." She gave him a shy smile, and pushed a strand of hair out of her face with her wrist. "Well, um. To me, anyway. I dunno, maybe it's old to you already."

"It was...kind of old to me by the first day," Cal admitted, but he was still grinning. It was extremely hard to hold enthusiasm against someone who did it so cutely and bouncily, even if it made Cal feel incredibly jaded and cynical.

Well, really, he was. He started wondering how long it was before Dinah's bounce wore down, and part of him was hoping it didn't. He was hopeless, but that didn't mean he couldn't have hope for other people.

"You're right, though. It is really different from the usual bullshit school. I take it you're from somewhere relatively," his fingers attempted airquotes as best they could around weight, "'normal'?"

Dinah rolled her eyes, and punched the bag hard, one-two, one-two, one-two. "Oh yeah. New Gotham City. Which you probably haven't heard of, with the whole different worlds thing. I mean, there's some big-city-weirdness, and crime, but no new-dimensions, or time-travel, or... guys living with girls!"

Yeah, she's not over that yet.

Cal had to laugh a little at that. "I'm pretty sure," he said, "that they have guys living with girls in any metropolitan area. A very well hidden scandal, obviously, but you'd be amazed what happens behind all those closed door."

Dinah giggled, and stopped punching the bag, and said, "Well, sure, I mean... you know what I mean!" She leaned against the bag, and shook her head, blushing. Hopefully it wouldn't be noticeable with the sweat and exertion. "I have a guy for a roommate, and he seems really laid-back and nice, but I'm so behind the curve I'm still trying to be blase' about it today. And no one here cares! I had to ask..." Um, not telling the latest cute guy she'd wondered if she'd have to shower with guys, no. "Um. I just. I keep waiting for something else new and weird, you know?"

"There's always something new around the corner here," Cal said, "don't worry. Who's the," lucky, "guy roommate?"

Seriously lucky. That guy gets the babbly chick, and he gets the dork with the giant ears.

"Chad? Huge Japanese-kinda guy? Quiet and kinda sweet. And gay. Which, you know. Slightly less awkward. Well, and we're getting a screen." Oh god, Dinah, shut up. Change the subject, change the subject... "Are the classes as weird as the rest of it?"

Cal's eyebrow seemed to quirk a little higher with each detail, especially since Cal wasn't sure he really knew who she was talking about. Which was probably for the better, and he was definitely feeling more than comfortable with a topic change.

"Some of them," he answered. "I mean, some classes are super normal, or some are normal but have really weird teachers, and some are just out-there."

"Ooooo. Coool. Weirdest class?" she asked, aiming a kick-punch combo at the bag, and then a couple more before she stopped to crack her neck. Much better to talk about weirdness rather than anything close to personal... weirdness.

"Is probably not one I'd ever think of taking," Cal admitted, so very unhelpfully. "I like to keep my roster at least resembling normal. But...well, have you met Deadpool yet?"

[np! niiiight!]

"Oh, yes. Wow, he freaked me out yesterday. Between the outfit and some of the stuff he said--" Like guessing she wanted to be a superhero, ack! "What on earth does he teach?"

Oh, that response made the next part of this conversation perfect. Cal grinned. "Well, when I took him last semester, he was teaching cooking."

He felt that the instant Dinah had an image in her head of that guy teaching cooking, he needn't say more.

"Uh," Dinah managed, eyes wide. What? She started grinning. "No. Way."

"We had a whole class dedicated to setting things on fire," Cal noted with a grin back.

"Oh, wow." Mr. Deadpool was really nuts, and hadn't been messing with her! Her week was complete. "Is he teaching anything I can take this semester? Because I would looooove to see that."
