Grover Cleveland Campfire [Tuesday Morning]

Claire didn't have a class today until 6th period, so she was taking advantage of the downtime to sit at the campfire and enjoy some peace and quiet. Not that she had a fire going. It was just nice to sit outside.

She did have a glass of juice and some pop-tarts though and spectulated on the concept of toasting pop-tarts over an open fire.

Dean was out for a morning stroll of the campsite and slowed when he saw Claire sitting outside. He'd heard enough over the radio to figure it wasn't the same Claire he'd known before, but still felt he should stop and introduce himself.

"Hey," he said. "Need help getting a fire started?"

"If you want," Claire said. "I figured it was a nice enough morning without one."

"Mornings like this, fire's more for food than warmth," he said. "Less you want to go with cold breakfast or chance the dining hall."

Claire shrugged and held out her box of pop-tarts, offering him one. "I'm not sure if it would be possible to toast these over a fire."

"An interesting problem," Dean said, sitting down and moving to start the fire. He grinned up at her. "I like a challenge."

Claire grinned back at him. "I'm Claire Butler," she said. "Somehow I get the feeling you aren't new."

Dean bit back on the "I know" that wanted to slip out. "Dean Winchester," he said. "And no, I've been here three years. This is my last summer, actually."

"Winchester? You must be Sam's brother," she said. "Which means, I'm guessing you, uh, knew the other me?"

"Yeah I did," Dean said, relaxing a little. "Didn't want to say anything about it and weird you out if you didn't know."

"I appreciate that," Claire said. "I ran into Peter at the picnic and he filled me in. Um, I'm using a different name at the moment. Long story."

"Aren't they all?" Dean said. "And no big deal; I've got three fake IDs in my wallet right now. Sometimes you gotta stay under the radar."

Claire smiled. "Thanks. Why do you have three fake IDs?"

"Here? It's mostly just habit," Dean admitted. "On the road, there's never any telling when I'm going to need to be someone I'm not. It's part of the job -- did Sammy mention anything about hunting?"

"No, he didn't," Claire said. "All he told me was that people don't have abilities where he's from, but he kind of does."

"Some people do have some abilities," Dean countered, making note to remind Sammy, that beyond his visions, there were people like Missouri. "Though nothing as spectacular as what people have where you and Peter are from. But there's lots of other things out there. Ghosts, demons, shapeshifters, pretty much everything you've heard of in all those stories about things that go bump in the night. Our family hunts them."

Claire considered that. "Given what I've heard about this place, I guess it makes sense that you all ended up here then."

"It's a good place," Dean said. "People don't care what weird you're from or weird you can do because they all have their own weird."

"That's what Peter said," she told him. "My dad sent me here to protect me from some folks who are looking for me though, so I'm hesitant to be too open."

"I get that," Dean said. "But, just so you know, someone from outside comes after you here, they're going to have a whole mess of pissed off weird to deal with."

Claire smiled at that. "I've gotten the feeling that people around here are pretty protective of each other."

"We are that. Plus, it's a Winchester family trait and you kinda get that by proxy. Not the least because I almost asked the Claire that was here before out."

"Oh? Why didn't you?" Claire asked.

Because, you know, he was cute.

"Timing never was right," Dean said with a hint of regret.

"Too bad," Claire said. She wondered if the other Claire was under instructions not to date.

"What your plans after this summer?"

Dean grinned. "Take up the family business. Hunting. Saving people, killing things... it's a dirty job but someone's got to do it."
