Magical Reserve - Preserve Next to the Cabins, Wednesday

"Hey!" Tony said, once people had gathered. "Today we're working on shields again, but this time we're going to play British Bulldogs with magic." He pointed to a couple of people. "You and you. You guys are the bulldogs. Your job is to catch everyone else. If you touch them - skin or clothes - then they're a bulldog, too, and have to go after the others. Everyone else, your job is to not get touched."

Tony pointed to bright yellow crime scene ribbons tied to trees around the edge of the clearing. "That's the boundaries. If you go outside the boundaries, you automatically become a bulldog. Today we're only doing shields, so you can use shields and you can attack shields but no other kind of magic. Ready?"

After any questions had been answered, Tony pointed to one of the bulldogs. "Count to ten, slowly. When you get to ten, the game's on. Start now."

Trying something new! Questions welcome. Also, feel free to handwavily become a bulldog if you choose.

"May we use shields to attack?" Karla asked.

Merlin was there! Of course, before leaving to help Shilo.

"How does that work?" Tony asked.

Tony was also there.

Coffee and doughnuts? It was clear that Tony and Merlin really wanted them to have lots of energy for the game. Karla took a few extra doughnuts to make sure she'd have enough sugar to last the entire meeting. Ahh, the ~~joys~~ hazards of wearing a Dark Jewel.

Doughnuts. Nom.

Karla pushed her shield out, intending to have it bump gently into Tony. "That, and also using your shield to box in the bulldog. Though I supposed that one is hardly in keeping with the game."

Tony blinked as the shield bumped him. "We're practicing shields, so I'll say yeah, that's fair," he said. "No trapping the bulldog this time, I think. But we can change the rules if we do it again."

"And no dead-ending our opponents, right?" Karla had played a similar game as a girl. She'd cheated a lot, which was why she knew all the questions to ask Tony now. Hey...at least she wasn't cheating this time!

"What do you mean by 'dead-ending'?" Tony asked.

Two shields sprang up around Tony, forming a ninety degree angle around him. He was trapped in a corner, with the shields spreading along either side. "Keeps you trapped for a few seconds for a bulldog while I get away. A single wall also works, but isn't as effective. And a short one will probably be okay, right?"

When all of your playmates are stronger and faster than you, you learn to improvise quickly. Just ask Fiona's brother, Eliot.

Tony reached out to touch the shields and snickered. She was one to watch for. "This is a game, but it's practice, too. Anyone who's not a bulldog is on your side," he said. "Dead-ending's allowed, but if you're going to throw people to the wolves to save your own ass, well," he shrugged, "better we know that now than when the bad guys are going for blood."

"Only in play, rarely in practice, never for real," Karla said immediately, drawing herself up a little straighter. "If this were just a game, I'd do it in a minute, but since this is the Reserves and we need to know we can trust one another, I didn't think it was appropriate. S'why I was asking."

Karla looked away for a moment. "Good Queens don't allow others to die in their stead," she said softly. "Her first duty is to her land and people. Even just in practice."

"I didn't think you'd do it for real," Tony said quietly.

"I was thinking," Eleanor spoke up, "has anyone ever compared how our different magics work? And whether or not one individual's magic could affect another's? It might help to know how our magics would react in the event of an attack."

Ghanmia's class on Monday would certainly help today. Eleanor was quick on her feet, changing directions quickly to reach people.

Eleanor had brought along tea, enough for several people, in fact. She did snag a doughnut, though.

"That's why we're doing the game," Merlin replied. "It's not a serious attack on each other. Just to test it all out."

Arthur was keeping to the area far outside the yellow tape as he watched the proceedings. He wasn't here to participate, after all - he was here to see how things kept up.

He was not a control freak. Hush.

And Leto had decided to stop by today too, also for inspecting what they were doing, and not for participating. He had no talents that he would define as magic, after all.
