Behind the Dorms, Tuesday Afternoon

"Alright!" Zack crossed his arms over his chest and grinned at the people gathered for the reserves meeting today. "Last week we covered some different methods of defense, and then we shared our own strategies with the, uh... class."

Sometimes, Zack's analogies fell a little short, yes.

"This week, I want us to focus on honing our physical abilities a little more. It doesn't matter where you're fighting, you'll probably get tossed a few obstacles on the battlefield from time to time. You might not be used to getting a foothold in the sand, if you're fighting on the beach. You could be stuck in the preserve, tripping over roots and whatever else is hidden under those leaves. The junkyard is full of scrap and whatever else we've just tossed away, and the ground is hardly stable there as a result. Maybe you're chasing after an enemy who knows his way around a cityscape, and he's climbing walls and jumping fences while you're lagging behind."

For a guy who could jump ten feet in the air from a standstill, Zack was still known to fall victim to the horrors of the insurmountable waist-high fence from time to time. Not. Fair.

"So, what I want you guys to do today is grab a partner or two, and then head off to some corner of the island which has terrain that you guys aren't used to working with. And then I want you to chart a course, maybe a hundred meters or so, and run it. If you wind up stumbling, backtrack and do it again until you make it through. If you have any problems, come talk to me afterward, and I'll see what I can do about setting up some kind of practise session with you in the future."

[OCD up, and open to all!]

Arthur was present and accounted for, and hoping no one else would get it into their heads to start a fight this time.

Ino stuck to the edges of things and just glared.

A lot.

Turtle was there, of course, dutifully stretching because it was important and trying to ignore the fact that she might have been blushing just a little listening to Zack give the intro. Wait! No. She wasn't blushing; why would she be blushing? That was just silly. She was just suffering from a little bit of sunburn, that was all. Blushing. Puh-lease.

Now this could be interesting; Turtle had been on this island a long time, so she liked to think that anything on the older part of it was pretty familiar by now. Still, that whole unexplored woods on the new part could make for an interesting adventure, so she glanced around, trying to spot someone who might also be unfamiliar with the unexplored, and contemplating how it was interesting that, even if they did explore it, it would still be unexplored.

And this week Leto was here too. He watched the people gathered to see if anyone needed assistance.

Leto gave a nod to Arthur. "Anything happening last week that I should know of?"

"Leto," Arthur returned, with an equal nod. "Glad to see you're back from the great wilds." He pulled on one of his gloves, and thought about it. "Barring the island's flights of fancy? Not really. You got off light this time."

Also, Leto's new girl was batshit insane in a way that was far less pleasant than the way in which Queen Alice was batshit insane, but Arthur wasn't going to go into that.

"Hello, Zack," Leto said, smiling at him. "Did anything of importance happen last week?" Because he had a feeling that Arthur's and Zack's stories could differ.

Well, the Atreides had always thought there were more important qualities than sanity.

"Light? I take it you didn't have a good week, then." Because he didn't really want to talk about the tree business.

"I got to make fun of your leafy green head," Arthur said, somewhat cheerfully, "It wasn't a waste..."

And then there was the conversation with Merlin, which was none of Leto's business, and the irritating arguments with Fiona that involved her trying to twist everything around, but that was also not Leto's business.

Leto being a tree, though? Still bloody funny. He could use the laugh.

Being a tree was still funny? Sometimes Arthur's sense of humour was very much from the dark ages. "Can a week ever been considered a waste? Time is, after all, dependent on your perception of it."

Sometimes, Leto's sense of humour was still very much not there.

"It could be, if absolutely nothing of value happened in it," Arthur offered. It was as close to metaphysical if he ever got.

"So, should time be valued only by the events that took place in that moment? And can you value an event properly at its occurrence, without knowing the consequences?"

The Atreides were generally better at philosophy than at humour, although the twins had developed their own brand, which did involve driving people crazy for their own amusement.

Leto followed that glance, then looked at Zack. "I'm sure you can deal with it. What kind of misunderstanding?"

Re: Talk to the Guys!

[personal profile] bitchprince 2009-07-21 05:47 pm (UTC)(link)
"That," Arthur said, actually giving it a moment's thought. Mainly because it had to do with certain tenets of kinghood that he tended to spend his life stuck between a rock-and-a-hard-place in. "Would depend on the size of the event, and the ramifications."

A pause. "Which you can only measure long afterwards," he allowed, "But that hardly strips the moment of its value."

Damn Leto and making his brains do work.

One day Leto would lend Arthur a book on Zensunni philosophy.

"Then again, you might be unaware of the connection between the unconscious thoughts of a seemingly uneventful moment and the few seconds in which an important decision have to be made."

Oh.

"I see," Leto said, remaining calm. "Should you need my help, just ask, but I'm sure you can handle it." In fact, Zack would probably be the best one to do that.
