Behind the Dorms, Tuesday Afternoon

"Good afternoon," Arthur called, once everyone had assembled. He hadn't been at his best all day - time seemed to be on the blink - but he wasn't about to let that put him off. "Today, our focus will be on the art of 'guerilla tactics'." If he pronounced the word a bit funny, it might have been because it was fairly, er, he'd read it in a book. "If we are overwhelmed by greater numbers, this could be an option. The goal is to whittle away the enemy through ambushes and traps. Mobility is the key word. Considering the woods and the closeness of the homes on this island, it shouldn't be too hard to launch a number of small guerilla--" Again with the weird pronounciation, "Attacks. We'll be planning for several of such strategies over the next few weeks. This week, traps and ambushes." He glanced at Zack.

Zack, who was grinning faintly at Arthur's treatment of the word, nodded in agreement regardless.

"What he said," he intoned. "We've got numbers who can stick to the treetops, and those of us who are just as comfortable in the streets of town. We know the island better than any invading forces might, and so it's up to use to take that knowledge and use it to our advantage. A trap can be as simple as a pitfall, covered so that nobody but us knows what it is, or it could be a matter of waiting with a weapon, out of sight, for the enemy to pass by. It's important to know which camp you're sitting in, here. Do you know your way around booby traps? Are you more inclined to spring into action on a moment's notice?"

"Using set traps will slow down our enemy," Arthur continued, fluidly, "While fluid attacks from our end will destroy morale and pick the enemy clean with time. Of course, tactics will vary depending on the environment, so we'll be mostly looking at the town today. Are there any spaces where we can dig trenches and cover them, set a tripwire, that sort of thing? Which alleys and hiding spaces does the town offer in case we need to employ such tactics? We've been spending a great deal of time getting to know our terrain. This is one way of putting this to work. How many of you know how to set a booby--" another one of those words, "Trap? Share what you know. Explosives might also be useful, if any of you remember Rikku's presentation from several months back."

"This sort of thing is where our archers and gunmen might find a chance to shine," Zack noted. "Firing from rooftops, or treetops, or hidden in bushes. I admit to not being a gunman myself, and so some of you might be able to set the record straight on the matter, but your job probably works more smoothly when you don't have a target rushing at you in the first place." He gave his arms a casual sort of stretch, and then set his hands on his hips, grinning. "So, guys! Today, you're going to figure out which camp you're in. Are you the ones setting the traps, or the ones sitting in wait and then springing them? Talk to one another, sort that much out, and then figure out what in town you can use to your advantage, guys."

"On teamwork?" Ino checked, considering that. "I guess, the first thing, and the most important thing is you've got to trust your team enough to trust that they can handle the job. You don't got time to be out in the field and holding their hands, or criticizing everything they do, expecting them to stab you in the back."

She held up one finger. "Doesn't mean you got to like them, don't get me wrong. But you've got to trust that a) they won't backstab you and b) that they can do what they say they can."

"Sounds like we should have a trust fall circle," Griff replied with a smile. "Do you trust everyone here?"
intraspective: (is this over yet?)

Ino's eyes cooled slightly.

"What do you think?" she asked, almost lightly. "And trust falls are boring, you don't learn real trust 'less there's some sort of goal."

"I can't say I do, myself," he said, nodding his agreement. "What sort of goal? Like an actual battle? Or is there some way to train it without action?"
intraspective: (charming)

"Any kind of goal," she said, with a swift smile at his agreement. "It can be a battle, of course, but it can also be--capture the flag. Or get the bells from your teacher. Or get out of the room without the one supervising the place noticing. There's all sorts of ways you've got to be able to think, you know? Heat of battle is one thing, but sneakin' though a building it totally another."

Merlin was not stalking Arthur. To be stalking him, he would need to be hiding in his... insanely attentive watching.

Instead he was just five or so feet away and now a tiny bit alarmed. "Arthur?"

"That makes good sense, Ino," he said, listening carefully and processing it. "So really, it's something we could technically do here if the guys there were feeling it. Have you suggested this before?"
intraspective: (listen to meeee)

"I'm the wrong person to suggest things," she said, amused. "I joined 'cause it was entertaining. I backtalk when something seems stupid and let the rest of it figure itself out."

At least she was honest in her motivations?

"'sides Fearless Leader there? Expects people to just--follow. Like they're good. Probably doesn't think there's a real chance of mishap and, like, you know, odds are decent that there won't be. We've all got to live here after all."

"I don't know if I ever really joined," Griff admitted with a little shrug. "I just show up when I remember because, well, someone thought it'd be good for me to."

He figured he should be honest back. "I guess it's more a curiosity than really wanting to be a member of something." He didn't do groups normally.
intraspective: (sit down it's a talk)

"It's not a bad group," she allowed, "but I'm not convinced that it's necessary either. I mean, I've been here two years almost and every bad thing that's happened was dealt with."

She gave him a rueful look.

"Guess that's a bit fatalistic? But it's all a bit surreal comparing this to my world--I don't take it so seriously the bad stuff here 'cause generally it ends and people all come out okay."

[identity profile] youcantfollow.livejournal.com 2009-07-28 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
"Stuff ends well here?" Griff liked the sound of that and hoped his presence didn't alter it. "Of all the odd things people have shared, that wasn't one of them."

She nodded. "It's like," Ino gestured with her hands, "you'll get an invasion, or there'll be monsters--and I'm not talking 'bout little things like the alligators, but these ones'll be here for days and days, right? And yet the only thing that ever killed someone was a sickness, even then it was only one person. People just--live here."

Ino shrugged a bit. "Like it was zombies the last time, every tells me, and I wasn't 'round for it, right? But even the people that, like, got bit and turned 'round into zombies? Came back. At the end of it, everyone was standing and alive and maybe with a few more nightmares, but healthy. So it's, I don't know, I don't take the bad stuff seriously here. I can't. Bad stuff doesn't go away where I'm from."

Okay, he was not going to think about what life would be like if the terrible things that happened just went away. "Sounds oddly ideal. Like, you get the exposure to terrible things, learn from it, and go back mostly to normal?"
intraspective: (leaning forward)

Re: Discuss!

[personal profile] intraspective 2009-07-28 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
"Pretty much," she said, wrinkling her nose. "So it's, like, super hard to take seriously after a few years of it. 'Cause the bad stuff doesn't--last. It's awful while it's happening, but it all works out."

"Must be a school thing," Griff decided. "Odd way of getting us to cope."
intraspective: (maybe I could rule the world)

She made a face at him.

"Think it's more where we are than the school," she said, considering that. "I mean, lots of times, they're as freaked out as we are by what's going on."

Re: Discuss!

[identity profile] youcantfollow.livejournal.com 2009-07-29 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
"Fine, don't let it make sense," he said. "Can I count on you to remind me that things always improve next time they go bad?"
intraspective: (lookit the sky!)

Re: Discuss!

[personal profile] intraspective 2009-07-29 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
"Absolutely," she said, with a toss of her head. And a bit of a grin. "I mean, I got no comment on inter-personal stuff or anything, but if it's big enough to affect the whole island? I can totally shake sense into you."

Re: Discuss!

[identity profile] youcantfollow.livejournal.com 2009-07-29 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
"Excellent," he said. "I'd hate to react too poorly only for things to clear up right quick." The interpersonal things were never quite so simple.
intraspective: (oh reaaaally?)

Re: Discuss!

[personal profile] intraspective 2009-07-29 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
Her grin turned a bit wry. "Reacting badly is one thing," Ino said, "people do, under stress and stuff. But it's important to remember that it'll end and everything will go back to normal, you know? So I remember that more than what's going on."

Re: Discuss!

[identity profile] youcantfollow.livejournal.com 2009-07-29 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
"I've never had things go back to normal before," he said, trying to smile in return. "This is a new concept."
intraspective: (pretty armband)

"That bad back home, yeah?" she asked, glancing up at the sky. "My world doesn't work much like this one either."

Re: Discuss!

[identity profile] youcantfollow.livejournal.com 2009-07-29 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
"Yeah, makes it easier to accept the strange things here," he said, looking sideways at her. "You got a lot of people back home?"
intraspective: (at attention!)

Re: Discuss!

[personal profile] intraspective 2009-07-29 01:52 am (UTC)(link)
"Mm?" Ino gave that thought. "We've got a fair bit," she said slowly, "but nothing like this world, you know? Our biggest cities are probably littler than most of the ones here."

Re: Discuss!

He smiled, "No, I meant you, personally. Like family beyond your team."
