Third Floor Common Room, Friday Afternoon

It was Kate’s last day as one of the new kids. She was celebrating this by sitting in the third floor common room with some candy and a volume of manga.

Okay, so maybe ’celebrating’ wasn’t quite the right word, but at least she was happy.

"Hello, Kate."

Leto walked into the common room, mostly looking for company. He sat down next to Kate.

Kate was pretty busy laughing at something, but managed to pry her gaze from the comic to look up and give him a smile. "Hi Leto. How's your Friday going?"

"Good," he said. "I met my stepmother this morning."

He smiled back. "What are you reading?"

"Meta forDramacon," she said, showing him the cover. "I'm actually re-reading it, for the zillionth time."

He looked at the cover, not recognising it. That wasn't entirely surprising as he knew nothing about manga. "I assume it's good, then."

"Oh it is. One of the funniest things I've ever read," Kate said. "A little too girly sometimes, though, and the drawings could look better, but I don't care since it's so awesome otherwise."

"Girly? The style of the drawings are quite peculiar." He smiled at her again. "I have to admit I don't read much fiction."

"It's a romantic comedy type of thing, so that's where the girly comes in. And the style is Japanese, although this comic's been done by a... Canadian," she said, inspecting the back cover.

"So, what do you read?"

"History, philosophy, religion, science. Anything that helps me understand humanity. And of course, the literature among my people include oral tradition as well." Leto looked at Kate.

"Oh right, of course. Stuff I would call boring," Kate smirked, fully aware of her own pop culture oriented viewpoint. "Oral tradition, huh? That's... telling stories, right? Something we've replaced with television."

"Boring?" Leto raised an eyebrow, and nudged her arm. "And yes, telling stories. It can be a lot more fascinating than many TV shows."

"Yes, boring. Geek," Kate snorted.

"I'm not interested in things that can't be told in three minutes using exciting jumpcuts and a thumping soundtrack and as few big words as possible. Saying anything could be more fascinating than any TV show is blasphemy."

Only not really.

"Are you calling me a geek?" Leto asked cheerfully. "And a blasphemer?"

"Maybe I should add hearing-impaired to the list?" Kate replied.

Oh, she was adorable. Leto burst out laughing.

Jennifer wandered into the common room, a little wistful.

"Oh, hello everyone," she greeted.

"Hi," Kate greeted the other girl with a little wave and a smile. "I don't think we've met. I'm Kate."

"I resent that reaction," Kate announced, and turned slightly away from him - mainly to reach for candy from the bag on the nearest little table.

"Jennifer," she greeted, smiling at the other girl. "I think you're right about the not meeting."

"At least we got it out of the way just in time before the new new kids come tomorrow," Kate grinned.

"And what reaction had you preferred?" he asked, laughter still in his eyes.

Leto looked up. "Hello," he said.

Jennifer waved. "Jennifer," she introduced. "I live up on the fifth floor."

He smiled. "I'm Leto Atreides. And welcome to our floor." The last part was added with a smirk.

"Well, I, um..."

It was her turn to nudge his arm. "Don't ask me questions I don't have a snappy quick answer to."
