The deck - Afternoon

Yes, Jacob knew it was January, thank you very much. No, he wasn't wearing shoes. Look, he'd actually dragged the stupid t-shirt with him to avoid odd looks, but there just was no way to fit the shoes in the rubber band that was still tied around his ankle.

He'd done some experimenting and discovered that when he morphed on the island, he couldn't hear any of the other werewolves. Which was cool and worrying at the same time. It also meant he was going to have to actually call home if he wanted to catch up with what was going on. At least that worked, he'd tried it as soon as he'd gotten to his room on Saturday.

He'd slumped down on one of the chairs, his feet propped up on the table as he contemplated his stay so far. Class could have gone better. A lot better. His roomie hadn't killed him yet for snoring and he was four years in the future. He wondered if Bella was still alive.

[Open like a deck in winter time.]

The cold didn't bother her, so it wasn't really any wonder that Fiona might be found outside. Lucky her that one of the new people was there as well; she hadn't made it out to the picnic (there had been a phonecall with Eliot, who had apparently Met A Girl and the extended vocabulary insult had required her full attention).

"I'd say hello, but you look as if you have something on your mind," she said.

Hannibal didn't have a class today so he'd been out, bumming around town. Coming out, he spotted someone from the picnic, someone he remembered losing their shirt and had to stop to be friendly.

"You emo already, kid?" he asked, leaning against the side of the deck.

[will be off and on slowish!]

She smiled back and looked around before finding a nice chair for herself. She had a book, but it wasn't opened as there was Company.

...she could be polite.

"Good to know. I can interrupt, if you'd like. I could even tell you my name."

Hannibal smiled, unaffected by the little insult. "Cute but no. Naps tend to happen in beds, if you hadn't been informed. Fandom has all the good stuff."

"It could. The possibility is there."

She didn't actually speak for a moment before finally admitting--

"Fiona. Fiona Post. I could bring my middle name into things, but it's not particularly pretty."

"Interesting talent." One he couldn't fault. It could come in handy. "And you picked outside in the cold? Just trying to impress the girls with your toughness, is it?"

"We could," she said, tilting her head up playfully, "but then it would be very hard to go back to my book.

"New, Jacob? I try to meet people as soon as I can, but I missed the picnic."

"I think mine is hanging around the back now, where I can't see it," she said with a little smile. It wasn't one of her more genuine ones, but there was no guile behind it. It was just habit; friendliness even though she was always a little wary.

"So I couldn't tell you."

"Oooh, her name. Next, you'll be dating," he joked. "What is your name? I saw you at the picnic but you looked busy enough what with the shirtlessness and all."

"Ah, well," and that had her leaning back into her seat, "this place does seem to delight in breaking all laws of physics, chemistry, and probability. I'm probably not the best person to ask, though. Better with the hard sciences."

"Hannibal King." Jacob's name, it rang familiar and he snorted. "I heard about you too. I wasn't acting like a fool and getting naked in the winter. Considering the amount of people, easy to get lost. Welcome to the island."

Tahiri didn't usually clump her way across the deck, any other time of year but winter, and the fact that she was now, out of necessity, accounted for the slight scowl on her face. Stupid cold weather. Stupid boots, although she had a lot more love for the cloak wrapped close around her; when you were as thin as she was, the cold settled in easily, Jedi abilities or not.

So the sight of a pair of bare feet propped up on a table caught her eye for reasons other than being trained in observation, and when she took in the sheer size of the person those feet belonged to . . .

"Oh, that's not fair."

That made her sit up, interested.

"Automobile engines?"

The history of the machinery was a favorite with her, and the automobile had always been one of her favorite parts of it.

"In theory, or in practice?"

She was all theory on this one.
