Alex's version of break had consisted mainly of sleeping, smoking, sleeping some more and the occasional break for socialization. Today, the roof seemed like the place to smoke. He'd done it enough, he was a regular and it was fairly warm out. It meant he could lay down on the roof's edge, cigarette in his mouth, arms tucked behind his head and eyes closed.

For once, the roof wasn't going to be home to his brooding. He was in a mood but he wasn't ready to punch the first deserving person he saw and he wasn't completely overwhelmed with his own issues. His mood was just...something. He didn't really know.

Decent mood, for once. Better take advantage.

Well, that was just unacceptable. Someone had to brood on the roof, and if Alex wasn't going to, then someone else had to.

And here came just the girl for the job.

After spending the first half of the day saying goodbye to Leto, and then dancing in the gym to convince herself she was fine, Kate just really needed a smoke.

Unfortunately, her lighter disagreed with her.

"--goddamn piece of shit, don't do this to me!"

Yeah. Feel the waves of sheer positivity, roof.

Well, that was enough to disturb Alex's peace. He opened one eye, peered at the owner of that positivity.

"Problems?" Alex asked mildly, not caring if that question had an obvious answer.

"Yes," Kate whined in response, not looking up. 'Cause, y'know, glaring at the lighter might make it work. "This fucking thing fucking hates me."

"Have you tried whispering sweet nothings in its ear?" he asked, already reaching into his pocket to dig out his lighter. See, he could be charitable smartass.

She glanced up at him. "Fandom hasn't messed me up that badly yet." Beat. "God, this could easily be a Fandom thing. A 'let's all fuck with Kate' day."

She didn't really believe that. It was just a bad day.

She looked out over the town, seemingly considering throwing her lighter off the roof.

"Oh, calm the fuck down and use my lighter," he said, tossing it her way lazily. "You're making me tense and I don't have anyone around right now to work those kinks out. So, calm. Down."

She rolled her eyes before lighting her cigarette, and tossing the lighter back to him.

Maybe she didn't really calm down, but at least she shut up for a moment. This whole smoking thing deserved a little bit of quiet.

"See, was that so hard?" Alex asked, shaking his head and sticking his lighter back in his pocket. "What's your deal? Or are you so dramatic that you'd throw a tantrum over a lighter?"

"Yes," Kate replied dryly. "I'm a total diva. Can't handle bullshit like this."

"I'm sensing some sarcasm there." Not that sensing sarcasm was particular difficult right now. "Besides, if you're a diva and throwing a tantrum over a lighter? You're a shitty diva."

Because Alex knew so much about divas.

"Oh, yes, I'm sure you're just an expert on divas, Alex."

Just because they'd never actually talked didn't mean she didn't remember his name. Wow.

"Under that rough exterior is a drag queen, just screaming to get out."

Alex was just going to think she knew his name because he just had that reputation. His ego demanded it. Besides, it wasn't like he didn't know her name.

"Little early in our relationship for you to be wanting to see me naked, isn't it?" Yes, he was going to twist her words.

Aww, look at Kate. All unimpressed. Try harder, Alex.

"That didn't follow at all smoothly from what I just said," she noted. Almost amused. "Because I think the implication would've been more something like I want to see you in women's clothing."

She paused for a drag off her cigarette. Pun intended.

"Besides, isn't that how most relationships start?"

"If you want to see me in womens clothing, I'd just revise my opinion of you into thinking you're a kinky one," Alex said, unphased.

He did push himself into a sitting position though, showing that he could totally put in some effort.

"You really thinking about relationships when you realize you wanna see someone naked?" Alex wondered. "I'm more thinking of where the nearest wall is and how fast I can get the girl there."

"I never would've guessed you're such a romantic," Kate deadpanned. "And I didn't mean it like that. Doesn't matter if you're thinking about relationships at that moment, it could still easily end up being one."

Probably not when either one of them was concerned, but.

"You think we're gonna let this meeting grow into a relationship, Kate?" Alex asked, amused. "Aww. Softie."

"Oh, fuck you." Beat. "Just so you know, you're going to be stuck doing all the housework, 'cause I'm going to be a huge movie star and won't have time for any of that domestic crap."

Taking an idea and running with it, yeah. She kind of needed to, right now.

"That's fine, I'll just have many affairs and fuck them under your nose," Alex retorted, shrugging innocently. "Maybe even in the bed we share. Not like you'll care, Miss Big Movie Star."

"No, I probably won't care," she replied sweetly. "I'll be doing... whoever's as hot then as Johnny Depp is now, anyway."

"And probably wishing it was me," Alex replied, hopping down off the ledge and leaning against it. "Don't call my name out when you're coming. Might be embarrassing. For you."

"How cute of you to think I'd still remember your name at that point," Kate said, going for a mock-touched expression. With her genuine amusement showing through. "Aww. And you probably shouldn't ask all those blonde skanks of yours to call you 'sex robot', either. Even if them using my pet name for you makes the illusion more complete."

"You would give me a pet name?" Alex asked, pushing away from the ledge to wander closer. Hey, sometimes personal space invasions were a little fun and she was playing right along.

"One, I prefer brunettes," he told her when he stopped in front her, "and two, you giving me a pet name would prove just how into me you are. Your heart belongs to me even if you were getting banged by some greasy haired chump who probably had to be told where to stick it in."

"It would be an old pet name. You know how it is, when at first it's all... roses and pink hearts and pet names. Before reality sets in, and you realize your heart doesn't actually belong to anyone, because you never had one."

Kate? Not one to be shaken by people invading her personal space. She blew some smoke rings past him before raising a brow.

"Also, you think I'd let anyone who doesn't know what he's doing into my bed? I'm offended."

"If you were desperate." Alex shrugged again before nodding. "Besides, every guy would look like an amateur compared to me. Just admitting that fact and letting me back in your pants would be the smart thing to do."

And just because she wasn't shaken didn't mean Alex would back off or even try something new. He liked his approach and what it usually got him.

"Well I never said I'd stop fucking you," Kate pointed out. "Just that there would be glamorous film star hunks on the side. Also, if I was letting you back into my pants, that'd mean you'd want to get back in."

She smirked smugly.

"So maybe you'd be having some trouble getting over me, too."
