Godzilla Firepit, Wednesday Morning

He hadn't spent much time with telephones or computers yet, but even after he did Christian's favorite invention of the 21st century might still be the ballpoint pen. Not having an inkwell to fuss with made it much easier for him to take his writing to beside the cold firepit, where he could alternate drinking coffee and people-watching with writing. He was working on two things: A poem for himself, and his first letter home to his father. One was, of necessity, rather more censored than the other. (As far as Christian's father would ever know, this was exactly the severe boarding school of his dreams.)

It felt too early to build a campfire, and Christian wasn't in the mood for the labor of gathering wood and tinder anyhow. He'd let someone else build the fire, if they wanted to.

"What rhymes with sunshine?" he muttered, new pen scratching away.

"Little brother!" Alex greeted, coffee in one hand and smirk on his face. "You haven't fled the island yet."

"One sign?" Leia suggested, overhearing him as she happened to be wandering by -- on two legs now, thank you.

"You could do worse," Alex said, taking a seat and stretching out his legs. "Island's not so bad except when it is. You escape that baggage shit from the other week?"

"That entirely depends on what you want to say about the sunshine, doesn't it?" inquired the somewhat musical voice of the girl who had come strolling by, a rakishly-tilted wreath of fresh wildflowers crowning her head. Impulsively Sara spun in place and let out a laugh. "And there are so many things one could say about it."

"Still no wet t-shirt?" He was going to greet her like that forever. "Bummer!"

"Glad I could help," Leia smiled, sitting down nearby. She still had to struggle with the urge to stretch out in a patch of sun and nap. "What are you working on?"

Leia grinned and looked upward. "Well, maybe if it rains," she said. "Know anyone who can control the weather?"

"No, but I can get a few bottles of water and pretend like I can," Alex offered.

"Usually if it's happening to everyone, it's the island," Alex told him, reaching in his pocket for his cigarettes. "I had at least ten bags show up at different points during the day. They'd disappear and then show up again."

Sara laughed and waved a graceful hand to him in thanks, saying matter-of-factly, "Thank you! They are, aren't they? I might as well wear something that is, since I'm in no danger of overshadowing them."

She tapped a finger against the corner of her mouth in thought. "Sunshine," she echoed, and repeated the word several times, experimenting with the sound of it in melancholy, hopeful, tentative, and triumphant tones. "Oh, I'm hopeless at rhyming, I'm afraid; I can't think of a thing."

It was so easy to get caught up in the poetry of a word itself; trying to find a rhyme for it seemed like a distraction.

"That might feel really good on a hot day," Leia mused. "How warm is it supposed to get today?"

[identity profile] fratboybitch.livejournal.com 2010-06-02 03:26 pm (UTC)(link)
"You would think that, wouldn't you?" Alex asked, getting his smoke lit and trying not to laugh. "Maybe my bags were really goddamn dull. Could be I've led a really boringly filled life."

[No worries at all!]

"Not a weatherman but it's already fucking warm," Alex said, peering up at the sky. "Guessing it's going to be hot. Humid, if anything. Which just makes it feel worse."

"Is there any better subject?" Leia said, then quoted Samuel Taylor Coleridge an Alderaanian poet, "Where true Love burns Desire is Love's pure flame; it is the reflex of our earthly frame, that takes its meaning from the nobler part, and but translates the language of the heart."

No, she hadn't specifically memorized any poetry from home just for Christian, why do you ask?

"Getting wet might be a wonderful plan in that case," Leia said, stretching her legs out in front of her. The sunshine was nice, the humidity, not so much.

"If it gets to be too much, just let me know," Alex decided, smirking. "Enjoying being in summer camp despite the heat?"

"The weekend was a little strange," Leia admitted. "I inexplicably turned into a kitten for a few days. Apparently that's not so unusual around here, though."
