Main Campfire, Thursday Morning

There was no fire this early in the morning.

Kate was there, though. Sitting on a log and munching on a pop tart. She was smiling slightly to herself, remembering another morning in this very same spot. And possibly lamenting the lack of drunken boxer raids this summer.

Or maybe she was just smiling because of her cute new sunglasses. Who could tell?

"I'm disappointed that there's no cake for breakfast," Hannibal said, wandering over, still half asleep. That meant he was half awake too, though. Not having to wake up early for classes was one of his favorite things in the world.

Cabins? Less so. Too many people.

"If you want cake for breakfast, you can walk into town and buy some," Kate replied, glancing at him over the pop tart. "I mean, you got a job. You should have the money."

So not baking anything in the morning. Ever.

"I spent it all on liquor," he said, taking a seat and leaning back with a sigh. "It's necessary to deal with Tino. And being cooped up in cabins that don't have doors."

"Dooors," Kate drawled in an exaggeratedly wistful manner. "I miss doors. You never appreciate them until you don't have them."

"Yeah, that curtain just doesn't really do it," Hannibal agreed, nodding and stretching out. "Especially when your girlfriend's next door. Hard to see her and be stealthy."

Kate eyed her pop tart through the sunglasses as she replied lazily, "Well, at least I don't have that particular problem."

What with the boyfriend living in an entirely different cabin, and all. Which she was now debating mentioning, but didn't. Though her lips quirked into a smirk, like at some private joke she wasn't telling.

"It's not a problem so much as it's a nuisance," he decided, glancing at that Pop Tart and holding a hand out. Code for 'share with me'. She should know that.

"If you feel like you're missing out, I can come try and sneak into your cabin, pretend to be your secret loverrrr," he said, rolling that 'R' just for effect.

Kate snickered while she broke off a piece of the pastry. As she was handing it to him, she said, as nonchalantly as she possibly could, "Mmh, thanks, but I think my boyfriend might have a problem with that."

And then it was back to idle nibbling.

Oh look, someone wasn't going to believe her. Not right off the bat, at least. Hannibal thought maybe this was some prank or joke on him. He was an easy target.

Still, he took the piece of Pop Tart and ate it before he said, "He's not inflatable, is he?"

Sorry Kate, you chose him as a friend!

Well, he chose her as well, and probably shouldn't be surprised by the incoming friendly thwap heading for his shoulder, right about now.

"No," Kate said. "They didn't have one I liked at the store, so I got a real one instead."

And said friendly thwap didn't get dodged because he'd more or less expected it. Deserved it, even.

"You got a real boyfriend?" he asked, still sounding a little bit disbelieving. "You yanking my chain?"

"Why is that so hard to believe?" she asked in return, slightly amused by his disbelief. "I mean seriously, would I joke about something like that?"

"Don't you wear your cynicism like a badge?" he questioned, raising an eyebrow. "I thought relationships were included in there somewhere."

Kate rolled her eyes. Which he couldn't see. But he might still know it happened.

"It's not like I've ever actually sworn off them," she pointed out, and shrugged a shoulder. "'Sides, sometimes stuff just... slips through."

"Well, well." Hannibal smirked and regarded her quietly. "When the hell did this happen? It hasn't been that long since I last saw you."

"Well, I move fast," Kate said and smirked. "Although actually, it's been kinda in the works since... January, I think? But just, y'know. Moving slowly."

She paused for a bit, then added, "Also I think it's been like a month since I last really talked to you. Clearly you're too grown up to hang out with a poor little high school student like me."

"Hey, I resent that," Hannibal said, giving her an exaggerated frown. "There's only so little of me. I gotta spread the love around. Besides, you haven't missed much. Other than the fact that Chuck's gonna give me five hundred dollars to get a tattoo."

But that was neither here not there.

"Since January?" Hannibal was far more interested in being nosy. "And you never told me? Kate, I'm appalled."

He wasn't.

"Babe, last time we met I told you that there was someone!"

Of course, she'd vagued it up with a sideorder of vague, because she liked vagueness about as much she liked doing this other thing, but. In principle!

Anyway.

"A tattoo? Of what?" she couldn't help asking. "And where?"

"You told me there was someone but not potential boyfriend material," he argued because he wanted to be right about this. Of course.

"And I don't know yet. I haven't started looking," he admitted. "I get the money and get to choose where and what I'm getting. I'll get your name inked on my back, Kate."

Kate gave an amused snort. "Yeah, I'm sure Angela would just love that." She shook her head. "Anyway, even this time last week I wouldn't have said he's boyfriend material."

The emphasis there was significant, yeah.

"Got any suggestions then?" Hannibal wondered. "For both what and where, that is."

A tattoo expert, he was not.

"What changed your mind?" he asked, keeping up with the two different conversations. "About the guy, not my tattoo."

"Think I just got bored with trying to pretend I wasn't going to be hugely jealous if some random skank decided to pursue him," Kate said easily. Really, it had been more a question of her admitting something she'd already known for quite a while.

"And if you ask me, you're just gonna end up with some super --" She had to search for the word in her memory for a bit. "-- kawaii cartoon character on your ass."

"Randoms skanks are the bane of relationship seekers everywhere," he teased with a grin. "And what the hell is a kawaii? It sounds like a fruit."

"It's Japanese," she clarified with a chuckle. "Means 'cute'."

"You just want me to get a tattoo there so you can ask to see it and see my ass too," he decided. "I know your game, Kate. So not subtle."
