Main Campfire [evening]

After trying marshmallows the day prior, Katniss was drawn to the main campfire again tonight -- this time, with food of her own in tow.

She had made a stop in town, using a small chunk of the money she'd brought with her to purchase as many different kinds of food as she could. So, while she had several bags of marshmallows and even a box of Twinkies (they were growing on her), Katniss had bought quite a few moddable things that one might not normally see at a campfire.

While roasting marshmallows proved easy, she soon regretted the decision to try to roast a cupcake. As well as the piece of pizza she tried to hold out over the flames on the end of her stick.

Katniss had never really had enough food to experiment with cooking before. She dutifully ate everything she put out into the fire -- even if it was charred -- but she was well aware there was far too much for her to eat alone.

[open like a campfire!]

"You need a stick with a forked branch at the end," he said, eying the pizza-and-fire combination. "Or a pan."

Yes, the city boy was offering campfire tips.

"Is this taken?" he asked about the log sitting nearby.

"You're not planning on trying to roast that fruit pie, are you?" Peter asked, more sort of curious than accusatory. It'd be interesting to see what would happen, at least.

"Oh, then--ah. Very funny." He sat anyway, invisible people or no.

He matched her eyebrow. He added a nod towards the fire and the non-standard-campfire fare. "Why?" he asked simply.

"That's actually a fairly decent idea," Peter said. "What kind is it, anyway?" He tilted his head.

And then he remembered his manner. "Nice seeing you again, by the way."

"That's as good a reason as any," he said, looking through the stash. "How fire-worthy is a...pop tart?" he asked, looking at it.

Not that he knew what a toaster was, less a toaster-friendly foodstuff.

"Well, then, a new experience for us both," he said, opening the package to find...more packages.

And inside that package was a flat breadlike thing the size of his hand, a hard frosting on one side. He offered it to her. "Lady's honor."

"You want unusual, you should try the snozberry," Peter joked. He sat down at the campfire and rubbed his forehead with a hand. "Are you actually planning on eating this entire smörgåsbord yourself?"

"Tie a spatula on a stick, place it on that?" he suggested. He looked at the other one in the package; it had crumbled at the corner.

"This does not seem like good travel food. It would fall apart in a saddlebag."

"It's Swedish, I think," Peter said. "Like a big feast where there's not courses but everything's just laid out." He nodded in thanks. "And thanks."

He reached over to snag a cupcake to nibble on.

"Always good to try new things. Just be ready for a sugar crash."

"Do you terribly mind sharing?" Rilla asked as she approached the fire. "Whatever you're making smells so interesting."

"It would probably keep for some time; everything in this place lasts far longer than it would otherwise." He shrugged and tried a piece.

"It's good. Very sweet."

"What's your favorite so far?" Rilla asked, peering at the pile of food.

"If you like field rations," he said, putting down the fancy hardtack...after having another bite.

"Have you tried this?" he asked, gesturing at the box of mini-donuts.

"When there's so much," Peter mused, "color can get a foodstuff to jump out at a buyer. It attracts the eye. Kind of like fashion, in a way. The better dressed food will get noticed."
