Skittle Campfire, Saturday evening

Dru wasn't one for a lot of sweets but since it seemed to be the thing to do, she had a bag of marshmallows if anyone wanted some.

For the moment though, she was content to sip a bottle of water and watch the flames.

"Dru!" Ino carolled, wandering over to flop down at the fire and give the other girl a grin. "I'm bored! Will you entertain me?"

At least she was honest in her motives tonight?

And in the mood for something--lighter than her last few days had been.

"I'd offer to do a short soft shoe routine," Dru replied. "But I left my dance shoes back at the dorms. I do have marshmallows though."

"I'll take sugar!" she said, perking up a bit. "Please! And what kind of dance do you do?"

A beat.

"Unless that was just a joke and then I'll pout at you a tiny bit."

"A joke," she said, tossing over the bag of marshmallows to hopefully minimize any pouting. The marshmallow sticks were in a neat pile next to the fire. "Dancing isn't really my thing."

"But you'd be cute as a dancer," Ino said, eyes wide and actually not pouting, but rather smiling as she caught the marshmallows. One went in her mouth promptly before she reached to snag a stick by her fingers.

"And dancing is fun--movement and pretty and music all rolled into one."

"I suppose," Dru shrugged. "Maybe next time the school has a dance I'll have to check it out. So far anytime I hear about a dance I've run in the opposite direction."

"There are dark corners you can hide in," she said, trying to be helpful. "A lot of people go and just stick to the walls."

"I'd be afraid of running into some of the coupley people making use of the dark corners," she pointed out. "Which I suppose is better then running into any of the other types of things that like to hide in dark corners."

"The corners ain't that bad," she said, grinning a bit. "At least, not the ones at the dance. You don't like fighting the things that creep 'bout in other corners?"

"I like being prepared if I have to fight," Dru explained. "And since most weapons don't go with formal wear, I wouldn't be."

"Chopsticks in your hair, maybe?" Ino said consideringly. "It looks cute and charming and you can get them so they're really blades."

Dru considered it. "I suppose that could work. I'm mostly used to working with a switchblade or a hunting knife, but practice would help." Of course given how often Dru actually put her hair up, it might not be worth the time.

"I can show you how to hide things in your hair," Ino suggested. "If you want to, I mean. It can be complicated but with practice--it's not too bad."

"Are you sure about that?" she asked, motioning towards her hair, which was pulled back into a tight braid. A braid which still didn't stop bits of it from escaping and frizzing in the humidity. "This is pretty unmanageable."

Ino's lips twitched as she glanced a bit sheepishly at her own hair. Long long long blonde ponytail that managed to look soft and tangle free even with the heat.

"That's what hair products are for," she said easily. "They can work wonders on any kind of hair."

"Oh I've been trying," Dru sighed. "There's a ton of conditioner in there. But in this weather it's a losing battle."

Dru took a moment to boggle at the conversation. Girl talk like this was not something she was used to.

"For this weather, don't rely on conditioner," she said, smiling as she stuck a few marshmallows on her stick. "Want the bag back?"

If not, well, Ino liked her sugar.

"Shine sprays can help a lot. They make your hair look good and give it a little more protection 'gainst the weather."

"Nah, I'll pass," she said with a wave of her hand. "I do want to sleep tonight."

"I'll have to look for one of those sprays the next time I go shopping. Maybe it'll help." And then, since she was working on her conversational skills. "So now that we've solved my hair issues, let me ask what's up with you? Anything exciting?"

"If you can afford it, try a few of them--some of them work better for different people."

Ino studied her marshmallows for a second before deciding they weren't cooked enough. "My boyfriend asked me to come home with him?" Ino said, smiling and leaving out all the heavy issues that came with that. "That's kinda exciting, huh?"

"It sounds like it," Dru nodded. "To meet his family?"

"Maybe," she said, pulling the stick off the fire and starting to try and peel her marshmallows off--they were hot! Ow to her fingers but mmmmm so good! "We haven't much decided, you know? He's not super close to his family, but he wants me to get to know his home."

"That's cool. Where's home?" she asked. "Someplace like Des Moines? Or someplace more exotic like outer space?"

Dru didn't listen to radio all that often so she wasn't quite sure exactly who Ino was dating.

"Different planet!" Ino said, grinning. "I date Zack Fair--super tall, dark and handsome with crazy blue eyes."

Zack's eyes practically glowed, she was justified in saying that about them.

"And a giant sword," she added. "He helps lead the fighter reserves."

"I feel like I should know that." She really did have to start paying more attention to radio. "But yes, I know Zack from Reserves. He seems like a nice guy. Have you been dating long?"

"A pretty good while, I think?" she said, a bit dubiously.

They'd been sleeping, just sleeping, in the same bed before they'd ever admitted to dating each other after all so it was hard to pin down a time frame.

"Neither of us were quick with labels, so it's a bit hard to say when it went from--friends to more?"

"Nothing wrong with being friends first," Dru said. "It's a good foundation. At least that's what my Gran used to say." She felt a sudden pang of longing for the old woman. There time together the previous week had been too short.

[Sleepytimes now! Night!]

"Dads says so too," she admitted. "And then he threatened to maim Zack back before we were dating."

Ino laughed. "Dad's a bit--over-protective."
