Percy's finals were all later in the week so he really had jack to do until then. He knew he could have gone and bothered Nico or Luke but he'd ended up in the common room instead. From there, he actually started cooking something for his breakfast. Considering the only thing he knew how to cook without burning something down were pancakes, it was an easy choice.

He'd clicked on the television to have some background noise and actually got distracted by some stupid talk show with the pancake batter slowly sizzling away on the burner. He would have burned it if he hadn't snapped out of the stupor.

The pancakes survived Percy's baking attempts and soon enough, he was sprawled on the couch, eating a late breakfast and preparing to watch something stupid on television. Unfortunately, when he went to flip the channel, all he got was a yule log. On every channel, yule logs. The television had just been fine but now...

This island was weird.

Sure there'd been a meal in Kate's last final, but there was no way she was eating anything served up by Professor Farnsworth of all people. So, to her common room she went.

Percy got a lazy "yo" as she wandered in, heading straight for the kitchen area.

"Hey," Percy said, just as lazily. They'd gone ten whole seconds without arguing. Percy thought that was a new record. "You gonna cook again?"

Well, even Kate could occasionally refrain from pushing his buttons. Whther it would last remained to be seen. "Nah, think I'm just gonna make a sandwich," she replied as she gathered up some stuff to do just that. "Not really in a cooking mood."

"Hmm." Percy turned back to stare at the television. "You know what's with the stupid tv? Is there something I'm missing?"

Kate glanced over her shoulder at the screen, then frowned. "Don't tell that's like, on every channel."

Percy held up the remote and clicked it so she could see that he was changing channels and that the picture remained the name.

"Answer your question?"

Kate groaned and made a face. "Ugh, that's gotta be some stupid island Christmas spirit thing again. It likes doing shit like that before the holidays."

"This is Christmas related?" Percy asked, staring. "How? It's a freaking burning log on television. It doesn't even provide actual warmth."

"Don't ask me, I barely understand half the stuff the island does," Kate replied, shrugging and going back to her sandwich making. "Still, I'd rather take this than the time we had actual fireplaces."

"What?" Percy didn't understand that one. "I like actual fireplaces. They keep you warm. What was wrong with them? Were little versions of Santa Clause emerging from them?"

"No," she snorted. "But we only got them because there was this huge blizzard that knocked out all our electricity."

"This place has blizzards?" Was that even possible on islands? "Could've been worse, right? At least you got fireplaces."

"It sucked pretty bad," Kate said idly, shrugging a shoulder. She'd been emoing it up over Jason leaving, so... It had been pretty spectacularly bad. "But, it didn't like tear the roof off the dorms or anything. The fireplaces were pretty, but not really enough for proper warmth."

"You sound spoiled," he said, half joking. "Never been in a good blizzard before? That doesn't sound so bad."

"Maybe I had my own reasons why it was extra bad," she replied impassively. "Anyway, you weren't there so you don't know what it was like."

"How defensive of you," Percy quipped, rolling his eyes. "Getting pissy over a blizzard. Way to go."

"I'm not getting defensive," Kate replied with an eyeroll of her own. "I'm just making conversation. And a sandwich."

"Nah, that was defensiveness all the way," Percy said, turning his attention back to the freaking log. "You just got pissy over a blizzard because 'I wasn't there.' How creative of you."

Nico had been heading for the stairs when he thought he caught sight of his cousin's trademark helmet hair and decided to stop in to see what was going on. "Percy...why are you watching that?"

"Sorry, didn't realize creativity was required," she drawled as she satrted putting some of the stuff back into the fridge and the cupboards. "You must have higher standards than I expected."

"Well, you don't really know me so you don't know what kind of standards I have," Percy answered, shrugging. "Nice job trying to take attention away from your pissiness over a snowstorm."

"It's the only thing on," Percy said, making a face. He clicked the remote and watched as the log just continued to appear. "It's not by choice."

"Oh," she said idly as she wandered over with her sandwich to flop down into a chair, "if I wanted to take attention away from that, I'd casually mention that I know what you are."

"That seems just...wrong," Nico replied, frowning at the log. "Why do you even leave it on?"

Percy's forkful of pancakes stopped halfway to his mouth and he glanced over at her.

"...what?" he asked carefully.
