Fifth Floor Common Room, Late Thursday Morning

Jeremy Darling was on a mission.

This morning, he'd woken up with a craving for waffles. Being a lazy kind of guy, he hadn't wanted to go all the way into town to get some, so he'd (in hindsight, somewhat misguidedly) opted for making some himself. It couldn't be too had, right? The Darlings' cooking staff did it, like, every single morning, so it couldn't exactly be rocket science. That thought in mind, he'd come down to the common room full of enthusiasm and optimism, even tying an apron he'd found around his waist, because wasn't that what you did when you were cooking? He thought he looked quite the breakfast chef.

But reality wasn't looking quite as rosy as what he'd envisioned after waking up. So far, he had managed to both locate and correctly identify a waffle iron. However, now he was really just... looking at it. Because he had absolutely no fricking idea about what exactly you needed for making waffles, other than a waffle iron. None.

His mission really wasn't going all that well, and he was starting to consider going into town after all.

"The appliances haven't become sentient, have they?" asked Bod after wandering a few steps into the common room. It hadn't been hard to miss Jeremy just staring at the waffle iron like he was waiting for it to do...something.

"Sorry," Bod apologized, wincing. "You were just staring at it quite intently. I thought there was perhaps a conversation happening and that I was interrupting."

It was sad that he wasn't even kidding about that.

"Have you figured out if the one here is similar to the one you have at home?"

"You could always try the toaster oven?" Bod suggested, wandering closer to Jeremy and his troublesome waffle iron. "I've made waffles in there before and managed to not start any fires. It was fairly easy, even."

"That's -- " Bod paused and tried to figure out how to explain this to someone who seemed to know even less about cooking than he did. "It's just a name. You can cook a multitude of things in it, I've gathered. It's just a suggestion though. Perhaps the waffle iron will be intuitive for you once you turn it on?"

At least he was talking to someone that didn't really react to him not knowing how to do it. He'd lived without technology for a long time.

"I think," he started, leaning over to take a look at the waffle iron, "that there's a plug we need to insert into the wall socket. That should start the power and get it heating, at least."

Bod scratched his head. "Well, do you have any waffles? I know the grocery stores carry the instant ones that only require heat to become fully cooked. Is that what you were going for?"

Bod winced again. "I don't know how much help I'll be in that fact realm of things. I'm used to buying them prepackaged and heating them up since I've failed to get the hang of making them for scratch."

He scratched his head again. "Do you have a cookbook?"

"It might be helpful," Bod said lightly, glancing around. "All right, what do you have? The waffle iron, which is on. What else?"
therewaslife: (→ | oh yes?)

"I...think so," he said, sounding unsure. This really was the blind leading the blind right now. "I think eggs are added to almost every recipe. I just don't know...how many."

Did someone say waffles? Stephanie might be required to show up, now.

"Roomie," she said, muffling a yawn as she shuffled into the common room, still in her pajamas that did not have a bat on them anywhere, thank you. "The waffle iron isn't that scary. Promise."

This was going to end badly if they weren't careful. "Two sounds all right. It doesn't sound like too many or too few. I think it sounds just right."

Just right compared to what, Bod didn't know.

"Really?" Steph smirked faintly. "Then maybe I need more caffeine, because it looked like you thought it might bite you."

She wandered over to peer at the waffle iron. "Nope. It's teeth-free."

"Flour's a good guess," Bod said, nodding. It seemed like flour was an important ingredient in just about everything. "And I'd assume sugar too because something has to give it the sweet flavor. Does that make sense?"
