So, there were kids running around the island again. Nathan could only guess that since none of them had found him and called him 'daddy' that this wasn't a repeat of what happened a few months ago. Nathan, for one, was damn fucking glad of that. He'd been a dad, fake or not, too much lately.

Since it was chillier than previous days, Nathan had the hood of his hoodie yanked up and a pair of sunglasses across his eyes while he had himself a lazy smoke on the deck. He'd thought about going up to his room to...well, he didn't know what he'd do but it didn't matter because he didn't go up.

Earlier this morning, he'd sent his mum a quick text with his answer about coming home this summer. He hadn't received a response but he wasn't too worried. She was probably off spending Jeremy's money while he had graphic fucking thoughts about his --

Ugh. He made a face and shook his head, trying to get back to just sitting there and not thinking of a single goddamn thing.

"Queens?" Nathan repeated dubiously. "You're not a queen. If you're any member of a royal family, you're the...queen's personal bathroom cleaner."

"I have a crown!" Kate pointed out, pointing at her tiara. "Don't be a dummy, Nathan, bathroom cleaners don't wear crowns."

"You ain't the queen of no one, kid," Nathan said, shaking his head. "Cute that you think you are but delusions of grandeur is all they are. That tiara's fake."

Ohh, now Kate was so going to frown at him forever. Or, until something distracted her from it. Whichever happened first. "'S not, it's real. What do you know about crowns anyway?"

"I know that's not a real crown," Nathan said, flicking it with his fingers. "I come from a country where there's an actual monarchy. I've seen real crowns. They're a lot...fancier."

"This is fancy enough," Kate protested, taking a step back and raising both hands to hodl her tiara protectively. "You're just jealous."

"Of you?" Nathan laughed and shook his head. "You're the size of a tampon kid. I think you're jealous of me and all I have to offer. It's okay, you're not the first."

"You have stupid hair," Kate decided, maturely. "And you looked lonely so I was gonna give you a hug but I'm not gonna anymore."

"I looked lonely?" Nathan asked, a little surprised that a kid could tell that about him. "What gives you that idea? I'm not lonely at all. I'm fucking living it up!"

Kate shrugged. "I dunno, you just looked it," she said, sticking her hands in her pockets now that her crown seemed to be safe. "It's okay to be lonely sometimes, Mommy says so."

"I'm not lonely," he lied, shaking his head. "I'm never lonely. All I need is myself to have a raucous fucking party, you know? I don't need anyone."

He waved a hand and dismissed that thought. "What if you're the lonely one?"

"'M not," Kate said with a quick shake of her head. "I'm being in-depen-dent. But if I was lonely I'd want a hug. An' everybody needs somebody."

"Needing someone only gets you fucked over kid," he said sagely, rolling his eyes. "The only person anyone needs is themselves. You can get food, get sleep, get...pleasure, get anything on your own. If you're being independent, you obviously don't need anyone."

"Well, mebbe I dun need anyone --" Even if she was too short to even reach a lot of things, yes. "-- but I feel better when there are other people around!"

Which probably meant needing other people, but she wasn't quite as sharp yet as she would be in a few years.

"Do you want me to give you a hug or something, kid?" Nathan wondered, glancing over at her. "I doubt it's gonna do anything for any kind of loneliness you might be feeling."

"I dun want a hug, but I think you need one." She'd just decided that. Also, there was something else she needed to object to. "And I'm not a kid."

"And what's a hug gonna do for me, kid?" Nathan wondered, sounding amused now. "Cure everything that's wrong with me?"

"No but it can't make anything worse," Kate decided, shaking her head. "Hugs are always good! Here, I'll show you."

And yes, she was going to step closer to try and awkwardly hug him with her weetiny child arms, now.

Pushing a kid away when she was trying to hug him seemed cruel so Nathan didn't. He just let her hug him and even slipped one long arm around her to return the hug mildly.

Kate made it as good a hug as she possibly could, too. After a sufficient amount of time, she pulled back and beamed at him.

"See?"

"Okay, it wasn't a bad hug," he admitted with a half smile. "How was it for you? I do okay?"

"You did great!" she assured him. Even if he did smell like Buck. "It was my best hug today -- well, mebbe not the best, but very good!"

Hey, he smiled like Nathan!

"Who gave you your best hug?" he wondered curiously.

"Bod," Kate ~~modded horribly~~ said, nodding. "His hugs are the best! Best today. I think Mommy's hugs are the best ever, but here it's probly Bod."

"Is Bod like your booooooooooyfriend?" Nathan teased, not even trying to be gross about it.
