So, there were kids running around the island again. Nathan could only guess that since none of them had found him and called him 'daddy' that this wasn't a repeat of what happened a few months ago. Nathan, for one, was damn fucking glad of that. He'd been a dad, fake or not, too much lately.

Since it was chillier than previous days, Nathan had the hood of his hoodie yanked up and a pair of sunglasses across his eyes while he had himself a lazy smoke on the deck. He'd thought about going up to his room to...well, he didn't know what he'd do but it didn't matter because he didn't go up.

Earlier this morning, he'd sent his mum a quick text with his answer about coming home this summer. He hadn't received a response but he wasn't too worried. She was probably off spending Jeremy's money while he had graphic fucking thoughts about his --

Ugh. He made a face and shook his head, trying to get back to just sitting there and not thinking of a single goddamn thing.

"Do you want me to give you a hug or something, kid?" Nathan wondered, glancing over at her. "I doubt it's gonna do anything for any kind of loneliness you might be feeling."

"I dun want a hug, but I think you need one." She'd just decided that. Also, there was something else she needed to object to. "And I'm not a kid."

"And what's a hug gonna do for me, kid?" Nathan wondered, sounding amused now. "Cure everything that's wrong with me?"

"No but it can't make anything worse," Kate decided, shaking her head. "Hugs are always good! Here, I'll show you."

And yes, she was going to step closer to try and awkwardly hug him with her weetiny child arms, now.

Pushing a kid away when she was trying to hug him seemed cruel so Nathan didn't. He just let her hug him and even slipped one long arm around her to return the hug mildly.

Kate made it as good a hug as she possibly could, too. After a sufficient amount of time, she pulled back and beamed at him.

"See?"

"Okay, it wasn't a bad hug," he admitted with a half smile. "How was it for you? I do okay?"

"You did great!" she assured him. Even if he did smell like Buck. "It was my best hug today -- well, mebbe not the best, but very good!"

Hey, he smiled like Nathan!

"Who gave you your best hug?" he wondered curiously.

"Bod," Kate ~~modded horribly~~ said, nodding. "His hugs are the best! Best today. I think Mommy's hugs are the best ever, but here it's probly Bod."

"Is Bod like your booooooooooyfriend?" Nathan teased, not even trying to be gross about it.

"No, duh," Kate said, laughing. "'M seven, I dun have a boyfriend. But I like him!"

"Hey, when I was seven, I had about five girlfriends," he lied, smirking. "You're falling behind."

"But I dun need girlfriends!" Well, he'd just talked about girlfriends, it wasn't her job to deduce she was supposed to compete with a slew of boyfriends. Or, she might have misunderstood on purpose. "Imma queen, and I'm independent. Mebbe I jus' need a king?"

"And who'd you pick as a king if you had your choice?" Nathan asked, just letting her train of thought go without argument. He remembered how he was as a kid, it'd be pointless to argue.

Kate pondered that for a while, like it was a serious question that warranted serious pondering. And well, for her it did. "Prob'ly Bod," she admitted finally. "He'd let me have ice cream for breaffast."

"I could never be your king?" Nathan wondered, having expected that answer which helped him confirm who this was.

Kate tilted her head and squinted, thoughtfully. "You could mebbe be my advi...sing person?"

Because that would certainly end well.

"Would I get paid a lot of money?" Nathan had priorities.

"Dunno." Kate's priorities were sadly elsewhere, and she shrugged. "But you'd get ice cream for breffast too!"

"I don't like ice cream." That was a lie but he wanted to see how quick on her feet Kate was when she was this tiny. "So, what would I get instead?"

"Pudding cups!" Well, it was the next logical step if you were her. "But not the vanilla ones cuz those are mine."

"What about beer?" Nathan said, trying to barter even if he knew it was fruitless. "You got any of that?"

"Nope," Kate said, shaking her head. "The beer's all Daddy's and sometimes Buck's and you can't have any."

"What if I steal it?" Nathan asked, raising an eyebrow. "You gonna stop me?"
