2nd floor common room ; monday afternoon

It was still raining. Sam had planned to go out and get himself a new skateboard to replace the one that was spray painted and covered in stickers but the driving rain had changed his mind. The last time he'd gone out there, he'd come back with a ruined board and a sparkling eyepatch. He didn't want that to happen again.

After spending some time in his room, he'd wandered down the hall and taken a seat on one of the couches. The Council meeting was next week and Sam didn't want to go. He'd just learned he was a necromancer not a half a year ago and now he was having to take over Douglas Montgomery's seat alongside werehounds (Brannoc was super intimidating), vampires, and other supernatural creatures. If he didn't go, Ashley would never let him hear the end of it. And if he did go, he'd be able to see Frank and Ramon, if anything.

Idly, Sam pulled the protective pouch from so long ago out of his pocket. He didn't know why he was carrying it because he hadn't had any bad nightmares lately but he found himself fingering the leather pouch quietly. Sam sighed and pocketed the pouch again. Later, he'd put it back in his drawer and let the spirits come to him.

For now, he flipped the TV on and started channel surfing. Daytime television was pretty awful.

[It's an open common room.]

Today was Annie's one day without classes, and the rain had meant that going outside wasn't big on her priority list, and gave her plenty of opportunity to finish all the homework that had been at the top of said priority list. That meant today was going to be spent wandering and looking for something to do.

"Anything good on?" she wondered.

"Courtroom shows are only interesting when someone starts yelling," Annie decided, finding a seat. "You'd think they could at least put a good marathon on or something."

"I will do my best," said Annie, taking the remote. "But if this doesn't work, I'm still blaming your luck. Hope you don't mind."

Even daytime TV was preferable to going out running in this city of endless drizzle. Kate hated cities at the best of times, and this one seemed to carry double the dank crowded feel of every other one she'd seen.

Training was getting put aside for the afternoon.

Instead, she took herself to flop on the nearest couch with an apple, and watch whatever passed for entertainment here. The answer to which, seemed to be 'not much'.

"Are you the sort to complain if I heckle the people who can't hear me?" The idiots who aired their problems on talk shows deserved it, didn't they?

She pretended to consider this. "I guess I can give you credit for that much. Even if I am the one doing all the hard work here," she said, engaging in the arduous task of flipping channels.

She shot him a doubtful glance. "And how would you know that?"

"Those people are idiots." Spoken like someone who had lived most of her life in post-Apocalyptic poverty. Extravagance wasn't something Kate understood. "You could do the same thing with scotch tape."

Annie raised her eyebrows at that, but she kind of couldn't not sniff the air in case this was code for I used Axe this morning and I'm not sure about it but can't directly ask your opinion or something. She didn't know. boys were weird.

"Maybe I have a cold," she said finally.

"You are not wrong." Kate had, over the years, had so much mud, blood and other assorted ook on her clothes, that worrying about lint just wasn't in her nature.

"I don't think I've ever bothered to check for lint. I've never been anywhere they've cared."

The very next channel she stopped on was MTV. Which had a Jersey Shore marathon going on.

Annie just looked at him.

Kate shrugged. "I've never really been to school. Not until now." Sure, she'd learned how to read and write along the way, but formal school education... the closest thing was the Order.

"Plus, girls who care about lint don't last long where I'm from."

Toby was bored, but not bored enough to attempt venturing outside in bare feet, so wandering into common rooms it was.

"Hey, man," he greeted Sam. "So apparently, it means 'radish'," he announced, referring to his mysterious 'tattoo' he'd ended up with the other day.

"Oh my god," she said, staring at him. "You've somehow missed Jersey Shore? You've never seen Snooki? You are so lucky."
