Outside the Dorms // Sunday Afternoon

Marshall? Had wings. And they kinda worked, as evidenced by his prior attempt in the common room. Of course, both his and Topher's first attempts had been... problematic, so it was time to practice.

"This is kinda fun, actually," Marshall said from a height of a few feet. He looked down at Topher. "You know, I was going to get you to go first."

Oh, Topher was so not doing what Peter had told him to do today. And he was way okay with that.

He flapped his wings a little, managed to get himself just an inch or two off the ground, and then lost focus and fell.

"Damnit," he grumbled.

People with the attention span of something more evolved than, say, a squirrel would probably have an easier time with this.

Which begged the question of how Marshall was managing it.

"This is a lot of work," Marshall said, settling down -- not gracefully, but at least he managed not to crash. "But not as much as I'd have thought for something our size, you know?"

"Tell me about it," Topher growled. He spat out some grass that had inadvertently ended up in his mouth. Wait, hang on, did ponies eat grass? That was a whole different thing, though, so he decided not to go solving that mystery anytime soon. "But okay, we have to get this. Maybe if we, like, look up?"

Marshall kicked off, getting a foot or two higher than he had before when he was just flapping. "Hey, that works," he said, flying in a lazy circle. "Try pushing off instead of just flapping. Maybe a bit of extra height will help keep you up?"

Ooh. That was interesting. Topher kicked off and, sure enough, found himself lifted a respectable distance into the air. Then he started flapping his wings frantically, in the same awkward grasping for space that was traditionally associated with a four-year-old doing the dog paddle. "Hey, look at that," he said. "It works."

Hey, whatever worked for him. Marshall personally thought it looked like way too much energy for way too little reward.

"Now the question is, how hard is it to go higher?"

Topher looked around for some kind of clue -- birds, maybe? When he couldn't immediately spot any, he had another idea.

"You know when you're balancing on one foot and you have to fixate on one specific spot?" he offered. "Maybe this is like that."

He gave it a shot, eyeing the top of a nearby telephone pole as he slowly stopped fluttering his wings. Sure enough, he managed to not only stay in the air, but actually glide higher.

"... Huh." It didn't sound to Marshall like it should work, but he gave it a try, giving a flap every now and then as he slowly rose higher, circling around the telephone pole. "That's kinda cool. Now if I leave the window open, I can probably get in and out from my window, rather than struggling with the door."

"For the, like, two days it lasts," Topher pointed out. "Plus you'd have to figure out how to get the window open, which sounds like a job and a half right there."

Better to just leave the door open, he thought.

Still... this was fairly awesome. He couldn't help grinning like an idiot (or a very happy genius) as he floated in the air.

"Maybe my roommate's still human," Marshall pointed out. "I... haven't actually seen her today. So I don't know. But she could open the window for me, which means we wouldn't have to leave the door open."

"Who's your roommate?" Because that was important, Topher. "Maybe she doesn't like the cold."

Also, roomming with a girl. Ew.

"Jocelyn Fairchild. I mean, we don't hang out or anything, but I guess we get along okay. No blow-ups or anything, anyway. Dunno how she feels about the cold."

Marshall shrugged, which made his wings shudder and caused him to dip a bit. He corrected quickly, though.

"What about you?"

Topher flapped his wings a little and got a little further up, just high enough to peer into some of the windows on the second floor. He didn't see anyone who looked like a Jocelyn, but then he didn't know what a Jocelyn was supposed to look like.

"Dave Nelson," he answered. "The guy on the radio on Saturdays. Kind of looks like he's running for mayor?"

Butters was stoked just to be a pony, but when he was traipsing outside and saw that other people had wings, he couldn't help being in complete awe.

"Oh, boy! You guys can fly!" he had to remarked with a delighted little prance. "Don't fly too close to the sun, or you'll burn your wings and crash into the ocean!"

Pause.

"Er, or at least the school building, unless you fly over toward the water."

"Don't know him," Marshall admitted. "And I don't listen to radio as much as I should. Although maybe he was in one of my classes? He sounds familiar."

He paused.

"If you're looking for Jocelyn, we live on fifth."

Topher seriously doubted he could make it that high up, so there went that goal.

"Yeah, maybe," he said, shrugging. It wasn't like he and Dave hung out or anything enough for him to know his schedule. "But there's no way I'm gonna get as high as the fifth floor, so you're on your own there."

"I think I'll probably stick to the grass," Marshall said. "And, like, not going above the height of the school. Probably safer that way."

"I'll give it a try when I'm a little more comfortable up here," Marshall decided. "Don't want to stall out and plummet from that high, after all."

Butters nodded. "Probably a pretty good idea," he agreed. "But, boy! That's gotta real neat havin' wings! Do you normally have wings, like that one guy has wings?"

Marshall shook his head as he circled down to the ground. "Nah," he said. "Seems to be a pony thing. I wish I had wings normally, though, that would be awesome."

Beat.

"... There's a student who has wings?"

Waaaay to be observant, Marshall.

Butteres had to think a bit to remember his name, but he was phys ed with him, so it popped right up after a moment. "Well, yeah," Butters laughed a little, since they were kind of hard to miss. "His name's Warren. And his girlfriend can't cook."

"Warren. And he has wings? D'you know why?"

Marshall... wasn't going to comment on the not-being-able-to-cook thing.

"Ummm...."

Butters really had no idea, so he gave a little pony shrug and laughed. "Probably so he can escape his girlfriend quicker, I'll bet! Ahahahahaha!"

WHOA. WHOA. There was a girl getting dressed in one of those rooms. He squeezed his eyes shut and ended up toppling out of the air and onto the ground.

"OW."

Marshall blinked.

"... Riiiiiight. Because of the cooking?" For some reason, Marshall really didn't think that was it.
