2nd Floor Common Room [Sunday, Evening]

After a good long lie-in, of the kind Kate never usually had, she'd called it a day off and made pie. Apple pie. It was a little known fact, that she left little known. Baking just didn't work for her badass image in the way that hitting things and glaring at people did.

But, spending her afternoon on that meant that this evening, she got to stretch out on the couch and eat pie. It was worth showing some domesticity.

Yes, she could have just pulled some bread out of the cupboards or microwaved something wrapped in plastic, but after a lifetime without processed food, she still found it... well, kind of disgusting. There were some things that were just better for being made from scratch.

It looked terrible, but tasted damn good, and went well enough with checking out what passed for entertainment. So far, still convinced the answer was 'nothing good'. The answer might change if she ever found anything that wasn't reality TV or a trashy talk show.

Sam hadn't had a lie in but he was feeling lazy and wanted out of his room so the common room was the most logical place to go. When he wandered in, he gave Kate a half smile before settling his eyes on the pie.

"Little early for dessert, isn't it?" Sam asked like he hadn't ever had a day where he only ate junk food.

"Some people might say it'll ruin your appetite," Sam pointed out, snagging a bottle of water out of the refrigerator before taking a seat. "You're not gonna even want dinner tonight. Shame."

The smell of delicious cooking called Butters toward the common room (and into the second floor one, too! Yes! It seemed his streak of accidentally winding up in a different one was over!), but he tried to tell himself not to be too hopeful. After all, it might smell wonderful, but it could be Karla cooking.

"O-oh boy!" he said once she saw it was Definitely Not Karla Cooking, though his fingers still tapped together nervously. "Is that pie?"

"Hm. What kind is it?" Sam wondered, giving it another look. "Blood and kidney?"

That was...kind of a joke because, well, he remembered their last conversation.

Sam took a few sips of his water and slouched down, getting comfortable. "You make it yourself or pull it out of a box and heat it up?"

"Why'd you make that assumption?" Sam wondered, raising an eyebrow. "What if it was just an innocent curious question?"

Butters gave the assumed pie a good look. "No," he admitted, "but it sure smells like it."

"Thanks but I'm not hungry," Sam said which would have been his answer the entire time. "I didn't take you for a cook. Find time to do that between burning things and conjuring stuff back home?"

Hey, you asked, Kate.

Butters rubbed the back of his neck a little, looking at the pie thoughtfully some more before his eyes wandered tentatively toward the girl who claimed to have made it. "You didn't use tartar sauce or nothing in it?"

"Yum," Sam said, all sarcasm. He smiled over his bottle of water before taking a few sips. "So, what's your favorite thing to cook? Lumpy pie?"
necroslacker: (what i'd say)

[personal profile] necroslacker 2011-07-17 08:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Sam shrugged and finished up his water. "I don't know if you could actually call what I did cooking. We dropped meat onto a deep fryer and watched it turn brown. My burgers were never lumpy though."

"Er." Suddenly, Butters wasn't feeling too keen on pie. "No, thank you, ma'am."

But he did at least offer an explanation about the tartar sauce. "There's this one girl, Karla, real pretty, lots of blonde hair, and they say she puts tartar sauce in her cookies. And that's wrong. Just wrong."

"So, what are the lumps?" Sam asked, amused. "Extra apples? Or some special ingredient that only you know about and share? Isn't that what all gourmet cooks do?"
