Sam didn't know why they'd suddenly been shuffled back to the dorms but he didn't really care that much either. Yeah, he'd heard the announcement and yeah, there was some stone out there but the announcement had sounded like the ramblings of some insane guy, really. Sam actually preferred the dorms because the beds were the bigger, there were doors instead of curtains and it was less likely that he'd trip over someone in the living room if he staggered out there half asleep.

Sam was taking the homecoming to the dorms very seriously as evidenced by his lazy sprawl on one of the couches, watching a movie that he already hated for reasons maybe two people would get. He hadn't changed the channel because he wanted to see just how much he'd end up hating it.

The Chinese food he'd gotten himself (he'd gone with vegetarian selections, of course) was helping his anger at the movie but he was still muttering at the television every so often.

He was way too sensitive for a necromancer.

Mercy wasn't exactly unhappy about getting to move out of the cabins, but that darn curiousity of hers was making her itch to go see the whatever it was. But since she was trying to be well-behaved she was mostly wandering the dorm aimlessly. When she hit the second floor the smell of Chinese food drew her in. "Mmmm... smells good!"

"Thaaaaaat's why I bought it," Sam said, not looking up from his container of rice since he didn't want to dribble food on his shirt. "Would have sucked to have it smell like cat food."

Mercy rolled her eyes. "Everybody's a comedian today," she said with a sigh.

"What's wrong with being a comedian?" Sam wondered, finally glancing up at her. "You want me to be some crankpot grouch of an old man? I can probably work that though I don't think I've got look for it yet. Gimme a few years."

Mercy slouched in a chair, then shifted positions and curled her feet under her. "Nothing's wrong with it, I suppose. And hey, here, who knows, you might wake up some day already looking the part."

"Maybe," Sam agreed, glancing back at the television and making a face at something before shaking his head. "Until then, I'll just continue my comedic ways. I like humor better than the alternative."

The alternative was anger and malaise and stagnation and he'd done a few of those already. He wasn't a fan.

"Hopefully the island has other things in mind instead of making me old and unable to control my body."

"Yeah, I suppose," Mercy agreed, then shook her head. "I don't know. I mean, I haven't changed into anything yet, but that whole weird 'everyone's a pony' thing... I wouldn't put much past it."

"Guess the island has sense of humor too?" Sam suggested, shrugging. "It could have been worse, people could have been skunks or stinkbugs or beetles. Horses weren't so bad in comparison. Weird things happen. I'm kind of just going with it. Not like I can do anything to stop an island that's alive."

She nodded. "Just have to adjust to what it throws at you."

"Guess so," he agreed, shrugging. "Looks like you adjusted to the move back to the dorms without much trouble. The island didn't try to turn you into a goat or a dalmatian or anything. Seems like you're doing just fine there."

"So far, so good," she admitted. "Just itching to get a look at what we're not supposed to mess with."

Yeah, Sam wasn't in that boat at all. He'd never been that curious and lately any type of curiosity he'd shown had gotten him nowhere good.

"Oooh, rebel," he quipped sarcastically. "So, why haven't you gone to find it? It's a small island, I can't see them having guards around a freaking piece of rock twenty four seven."

"Maybe I will," she said with a little grumpiness of her own. She'd certainly heard enough 'curiosity killed the coyote' comments in her life.

"What're you gonna do if it's just a regular old rock?" Sam wondered, slouching backwards even further and glancing over at her. "Gonna take a picture with it or something? Keep it as a pet? My friend Ramon would do that just to be a jerk."

"Who can say?" Mercy said. "Maybe I'll leave it somewhere highly inconvenient."

"Highly inconvenient for a rock?" Sam asked, sounding dubious. "And where might that be? In your roommate's bed? While I don't think the rock will care, I bet your roommate's pissed."

"Nah, I like my roommate. Maybe yours," she said with a grin.

"You don't even know who my roommate is," Sam pointed out, raising an eyebrow. "If you're gonna start conspiring against my roommate, I might have to snitch. Wouldn't wanna live with a pissy roommate."

She raised an eyebrow. "Guess you'll just have to wait and wonder, then."

Sam considered that and then shook his head. "Yeah, I don't care that much. If he gets mad, I'll sleep in the common room. Though, if putting rocks in other people's bed is what you enjoy, you might need a hobby. Stamp collecting's pretty boring."

"That what you do?" she asked innocently. "Collect stamps?"

"In between collecting coins and knitting, yep," Sam quipped sarcastically. "You caught me. Whatever will I do now?"

"Nothing. That's it. Your life is over," Mercy said with a straight face. "You need to get a few cats and a rocker and retire to an old age home."

"I don't like cats, rockers make my back hurt and I think I'm just fine right here," Sam said decisively. "Thanks for the tip though! You're the one wanting to collect rocks though. Think you're the one that's slowing down."

"Not a bit. Have to be in good shape to lug them all around, don't you know," she said easily.
