Second Floor Common Room, Wednesday Evening - Sewing Party

Lucrezia wasn't certain how time passing here affected time's passage back home. If the ratio were a simple one-to-one, then today would be her sixteenth birthday. But she had not been gone nearly so long in reality, which meant it seemed false to claim it as such, even if she had perhaps lived the days necessary.

What was required for today was an alternative to the increasingly aggravating costumes the guests had insisted upon. Lucrezia had many old dresses that she did not mind sacrificing to this cause; there simply had to be a way to extend her dress such that it fell to the floor as dresses ought to do. And perhaps some petticoats underneath?

She had enlisted Petra's assistance, and the two had decided that this should be open to any who wished to change their garb -- or, even more simply, to come and spend time and gossip about their odious benefactors.

The sign outside the common room simply read, SEWING PARTY. Snacks and drinks provided, as well as copious amounts of needles and thread -- bring only yourself and, should you like, the atrocity known as your school uniform.

Petra had not carted all her stuff to the common room this time because, for one thing, her sewing machine was heavy and there were a lot of stairs between here and her floor. So she had some basics and supplies, and could go back upstairs to work on any major projects anyone brought her.

"Hey, people." Kenzi wandered in from one door down, sucking on a lollipop, and watching the proceedings. "Do you think I could get away with making my skirt even shorter, if I was wearing hose?"

Kenzi had gotten a drink out of the fridge, and was now staring out the window. "Holy shit. You gotta come see this."

Lucrezia, of course, was not wearing the dreadful uniform, since she needed to be working on repairing it. That was the entirety of her excuse for pulling a dress entirely at random (http://image.wetpaint.com/image/1/oI5q5zH54okOvy7-bo8Nww361529) from her closet. If it happened to be ornate and elegant, well, so were many of her dresses!

Oh, yes, this was the dress she had worn to Gioffre's wedding, wasn't it? How one's memory fooled one. Silly old thing, she'd just tossed it on. Really.

She was staring at the seams she had just opened on the skirt of the uniform. "Must these costumes be so bland?" she sighed. "Immodest and yet dull. I had hardly imagined such a thing could be possible."

Petra didn't even look up from the work she was doing on one of her new clients' jacket. "If it's bunny humping, I've seen enough of it, thanks," she said. "Unless they're doing something kinky now, it's ceased to be interesting. And if it's Britta again, I washed my hands of her yesterday."

"How dark would you make the hose?" Lucrezia asked, frowning at the stitching on her own skirt. "Might I borrow the excess material, if you do attempt it?"

She was going to have a long, flouncing skirt, no matter how patchwork it had to be.

Petra looked down at the rather abbreviated length of her own skirt, and did not comment on that part. "I don't know, I think the pants are pretty un-bland. If only because they're so eye-searingly bad."

"There's a bunny chasing a teal deer!" Kenzi squeaked.

"Hmm. I was thinking black, but now I'm wondering if candy-cane colors to match the plaid would be okay." Kenzi grinned at Lucrezia. "And sure. I was thinking of taking out the sleeves too, and wearing fingerless gloves (http://www.clothlands.com/images/cls8/12879/Goth-School-Girl-Costume-45-Revisiting-School-With-Gothic-Style-2.jpg) instead." In other words, she was going to look like a Goth hooker, probably.

"What? Oh my God!" Petra said, putting down her sewing to hurry to the window. "Run, little deer! Aren't those things endangered or something?"

"I think so? It's not like you see them anywhere else-- CRAP! TEETH!"

"Hey!" Petra shouted, shoving the window open. "Hey, you leave that deer alone!"

"Ladies," Hank said with a nod as he pretended to tip a had to the people sewing. "Just what are we celebrating?"

"Horrifying, and yet, somehow still dull," Lucrezia sighed. "There is no spark, only flat ugliness."

She was now holding up a lacy petticoat next to the skirt.

"I shall need far more material to cover all of this," she said. "Unless I allow it to show here and there."

"Okay, that was an evil look," Kenzi said, looking spooked. "RUN DEER RUN! RUUUUUUN!"

"That's probably illegal in some states!!!" Hank answered.

"I've got a couple of pants legs worth of fabric, but I don't know why you'd want more of this plaid," Petra told her. Trying not to shoot an envious look at the dress she was currently wearing, yes.

"All the more reason to do it," Kenzi said, unperturbed. "Hmm. I should get Bo's boots to wear, too."

The word you're looking for is 'borrow', Kenzi.

"Okay, now I'm a little afraid that rabbit's going to come for me in my sleep," Petra admitted. "I've never been happier my roommate has dragons. RUN!" Wait. "Aren't the deer attracted to talking? Should we not yell at it?"

"Ruuuuuuun," Kenzi said in a tiny voice. "No one's ever told me what makes them go away. And those rabbits can't get in here, can they? I think I'm sleeping with the lights on."

"I don't know, maybe? I mean, they're rabbits, they're small, it's not like they need doors...we could set some snares in the hallway but probably we'd catch, like, gremlins and pissed-off freshmen."

"I don't want more of this plaid," Lucrezia said with a decided pout. "I want to wear this."

It was perfectly all right for Petra to be envious. This happened to be a gorgeous dress, and it was killing Lucrezia to give it up for polyester plaid.

"I would gladly hand out dresses to all who attend this school, that this might be our uniform," she insisted. "I have ducats enough to fund it, and I have plenty of dresses that we could modify. The ladies would be stunning, and modest enough for our benefactors' needs."

Some would still object, naturally, but it seemed as though it would be a fair sight preferable to polyester.

"That's no good. Oh hey! Look! More deer, coming to the rescue?" Sort of? That bunny looked pissed. "Deer solidarity!"

"What is the point of fingerless gloves?" Lucrezia inquired. Sorry, she was still quite stuck in the Renaissance. "Would the candy-cane colors be opaque? I suppose the purpose of the hose would be to cover one's legs, in which case any color suffices if it is solid."

"The destruction of these uniforms," Lucrezia said. "Or at least, their transformation into a new shape. We're hosting a sewing party. Did you miss the sign upon the door?"
