There'd been a ~~handwavy~~ email sent to the student body inviting them to games night, but Victor realized as he set out notepads and dice and stacked the manuals neatly by the chair he planned to sit on that he might be in over his head. He'd played tabletop RPGs a couple times, sure, but run a game?

Well. Fandom was all about new experiences, and the Lightning Bug premise seemed like an easy hook. He leaned back to study the manual one more time and waited to see who would show up.

Talk, snack on chips and soda, etc.

Be a settler! Or an engineer. Or a creepy religious guy. Or a space hooker. Or whatever.

The players are the crew and passengers on a small spaceship patrolling the outer reaches of the galaxy. You just got word there's a military coup in progress on a small planet called Alfredo. It might be risky, but stopping there will let you sell some excess weapons you have in the hold and maybe take on some refugees for pay.

The captain insists on taking the detour to Alfredo. React.

You land at a strangely deserted army base and get off the ship to explore. There's a variety of cool-looking military equipment left. After a few minutes, it's clear why the base is deserted: It's infested with slugs the size of cows.

Kill 'em dead.

It turns out the base isn't totally deserted -- there are a handful of thugs lurking outside the front gates. They don't look friendly. You need to either talk or bribe your way past them, or kill 'em dead.

You got past the thugs somehow and are now in the city of Linguini's main market, which is full of all kinds of vendors and is well away from the fighting. You need to discreetly make inquiries as to who might want to buy the weapons you have.

If you have other market business, you can take care of that too.

Uh-oh, you got caught and marched off to coup HQ. The commander listens to your story and says he'll take the weapons, thanks, and since you landed without a permit you don't get paid.

Give them up, persuade him otherwise, or break away and run like hell.

Whatever you did with the commander, it ends with you back at the ship and ready to take off again. As you fly away, the captain reveals he managed to steal a bag of gold from the army base.

You all share the money. Game over.

Wasn't that fun?

He is wearing a godawful sweater instead of a cape, but he does have the manuals and therefore the power.

dollpocalypse for the OCD. I haven't played a tabletop RPG since college, please excuse any mistakes.

And we are playing a tabletop RPG today ... because we can :-).

Topher had assisted in planning this thing, if 'agreeing with Victor that he should run one' counted as assisting, so yeah, he was totally here.

The fact that it was Lightning Bug-themed meant that the cape he'd brought to offer the DM as a generous gesture probably wasn't necessary, though. But capes were too cool to have to be worn over ugly Christmas sweaters anyway, so he decided that was fine and stuffed it back in his backpack as he snacked on chips and waited for the game to start.

Okay, show of hands. Who is shocked Tony picked an engineer to play? No one? Well then.

"Why do I have a weird sense of déjà vi about this?" Damn you, Kaylee!

Topher got... a girl engineer.

"At least it wasn't a space hooker."

"My character says let's do it," Topher reported. "Since she probably made the weapons. They're pretty great. You should charge a lot for them."

Or they'd been stolen from somewhere or something, but he was going to take the credit anyway.

Topher squinted at his sheet. "Zona," he said, "jumps onto a nearby rock or something and starts firing like crazy, because in addition to being an engineer, she is also extremely badass."

It didn't actually say so on the sheet, but he figured it was Lightning Bug and she was a girl, so.

"Hi," Victor said. His sweater had bells sewn into it; he jingled faintly when he spoke. "Did you have a cape just now?"

"Yeah, because capes are cool," Topher confirmed. "But not for Lightning Bug stuff, and you already have a... costume-like thing anyway."

That sweater, Victor. Oh god, that sweater.

"Because there's an alternate universe where you're in space?" Victor guessed.

"Probably." A beat. "I've actually been in space before. Well, a couple of times now. Ben. And then that time I orbited the planet in a SHIELD satellite."

"RPG?" Atton said, who had... pretty much just been attracted to the source of something that might have been a party (and involved playing tools of some kind). "What are you idiots doing now, and are you doing it for credits?"

Victor made a face. "I tried to change four times," he said. "But...."

The sweater looooooved him.

"More like chips," Topher informed him, passing some non-Pringle chips Atton's way. "Popular currency among high school students and the unemployed."

"Well, just don't try sneaking up on any supervillains," Topher suggested loftily. "Because they could hear you coming. It'd be embarrassing."

"Did you ever randomly end up in the old west in Ben's world?" Victor wondered. "'Cause that would give you an unfair advantage."
